So happy you're enjoying this season so much! The character storytelling is on another level. Love Korra trying to take the diplomatic approach. You really feel that she doesn't want to fight. And it makes sense that she would think Kuvira could be reasoned with. She doesn't have all the negative association with her that everyone else has. Her only experience with Kuvira personally was a positive one, namely saving her father's life and helping fight the red lotus. Perhaps she also feels like she owes her a little for that. It's just really interesting and like you said, there is a lot of grey in these characters and in the entire situation itself. True to life, it isn't simple. Also Asami needs a hug

Thank you so much as always Hannah! 🙌🏻🔥 It truly is, loving how focused it is on character development first, it makes the conflict and story potentially richer. Exactly! You completely nailed it, and it sucks that this stance of Korra is not working right now for her cuz the situation is very critical at this point. Oh yeah, when it's all becoming grey, it becomes more real, more true to life like you say. Yesss, didn't mention it, but I want to hug Asami as well 🥺

She's a really surprising character. Rather understated and not given a lot of screen time, but has a lot of depth from what started as essentially a minor throwaway character.

I really agree with how interesting Su & Kuvira's backstory is! it's funny how isolating herself in the technologically advanced and very well-of Zaofu, not interfering in the Earth Kingdom chaos is almost literally the "Ivory Tower" saying haha. Speaking of, I'm curious of the reasons behind Su's refusing to get involved in stabilising, turning Zaofu into her ivory tower; I came up with two additional reasons that might have played here too: 1: Aiwei's then-recent betrayal. As we saw in S3, that really shook her. 2: her political convictions; in S3, she said she didn't believe in the archaic Kingdom system; in this episode, she said she didn't want to "impose her ideals"; I think a big part of this might also be that she would be unable to go along with being a placeholder for Prince Wu instead of establishing her own idea's of an Earth Democracy (syndicalism, maybe even). Other than a mental moral battle, this might also jeapordise any military and political aid she would be able to get from the United Republic/President Raiko.
@darquidarqui
@darquidarqui 2 жыл бұрын
Oh wow, that's so true hahaha I mean, it's just so interesting cuz you see the flaws in the reasoning of both persons but equally understand where they're coming from. I wonder if Su taking Ba Sing Se really would've prevented this, cuz that would've given Kuvira power inevitably cuz the military would rise and and Kuvira loves to control. Very good analysis! Aiwei really affected her, showed how there could be someone like him anywhere just waiting for the right moment to turn against her. Her convictions vs the power she would get makes sense too because of what you said exactly, and that idea of imposing would imply a radical change in the earth kingdom that Su might see unsatisfying, cuz people don't like change. And prince Wu is there as well, there could've been political problems there. I think that Kuvira rising to power was inevitably going to happen lol cuz there's always someone looking for power.

I love how Korra has really changed and is able to take more of a diplomatic stance. I'm happy they are giving characterization to Zhu-Li and more to Asami as well (she's always dealt with a lot of BS and has never taken the bad side but has been empathetic to others). Kuvira is great even if she's the villain she's really smart.

Yes, I'm so happy to see this growth in her, even though the diplomatic stance right now is pretty difficult to achieve given how critical the situation is. Glad about that characterization as well! Honestly don't understand those complaints, it's so clear that Korra grows, and she fails and fails and tries to learn more. She's arguably the most human character of the show. Yes!! Someone who finally sees it’s a good thing that Korra isn’t immediately ready fight first. I love that she’s grown and is willing to talk first. We know Kuvira is bad news, but Korra doesn’t. All she knows is her previous reaction to her. I love that Korra is finally coming in to her own. 2 Zhu Li’s, I love it. Also that Zhu Li shade at Varrick being weak. Literally the best. Also Varrick, and the growth. Every once in a while even the annoying ones have growth too. Huh. Kuvira is boss. And scary, but also boss. ASAMI!! She needs such a huge hug!! She’s been going through it since season 1 and not once was she just given a hug. What I love about this argument between Su and Kuvira is how much it really shows Kuvira was gonna be right. She knew that su was gonna carry resentment and now all Bolin is thinking he’s got to resolve family drama amidst the backdrop of Zaofu going under the leadership of Kuvira. Whew!! This conversation that Su and Kuvira has is definitely dropping hints of deeper turmoil. More than just Kuvira coming for Zaofu. And here is ANOTHER reason I don’t like Su!! You said it yourself she doesn’t have to go in like conquerors.She could have at least tried a different way but she didn’t. I find it interesting that Su thinks that was the day that started to build resentment in Kuvira and not days or months before. The sentence “Tired of being a bird in your cages.” Doesn’t come from only a few weeks of tension, that’s resentment. Baatar Jr leaving and saying Zaofu stop being my home is from long time resentment. Most of her people willingly leaving, isn’t something that happens suddenly. It’s been brewing. We’ve seen pieces of it back in s3. With her telling Korra that she is gonna train Opal there in Zaofu. Like she can demand that of the avatar. It’s her way or it doesn’t matter. Like Korra training Opal, like her giving that car to the team and not telling Lin. Su has a pattern of this and I can only imagine the amount of times it’s frustrated more than one person. Kuvira is the only one who was bold enough to go against her. And what’s so interesting is that Kuvira does exactly as Su did but with the Earth Kingdom and Su can’t handle that. Kuvira was just like Su’s daughter, so all these methods all this strategizing, Kuvira had to get it from somewhere. And what gets me is that Su didn’t think the people of Zaofu, all from the Earth kingdom wouldn’t want to help the earth kingdom, their people? It’s a telling thing that what Kuvira said was true, Zaofu is a beacon and people would love the help and the sharing of technology from Zaofu. Kuvira built that army and made it huge only using the aid and when that didn’t work the violence to get that large. And then first thing Su wants Korra to do is go into the avatar state and end Kuvira?? Someone who’s supposed to be like a daughter to her?? Yea there is a lot more going on than just Su trying to stop Kuvira. She’s not wanting diplomacy, she wants to defeat Kuvira just so she can get her revenge. Either that “almost like a daughter” was fake as hell or Su forgot real quick who she was. And now, the half of a brain cell in between Varrick and Bolin starts working. Unfortunately, Zhu Li got the other full brain cell and those don’t listen to her. Seriously, Zhu Li, the best. The ONLY good thing to come out of that movie we don’t talk about is Seychelle Gabriel! Her as Asami, hitting these emotional notes, yes please! Also GIVE THAT GIRL A HUG! Asami is literally the best girl who deserves the world. And Su going over there to assisnate Kuvira?!! Her supposed “like a daughter”?! Yea, this is Revenge! This was never about Kuvira coming for Zaofu, this was about Su getting revenge for feeling slighted by Kuvira. She made this mess and keeps making these kind of decisions and got my girl Korra caught in the middle, I’m supposed to like her?! Nah. Honestly, I love Kuvira and her depth. Like Toph said, these villians tend to go to extremes. We really see how earnest she was in trying to help the earth kingdom in the best way she knows how but look how far it’s gone. It’s so wonderful to see the extreme can even be people a little closer to home. You’re discussion was amazing! I loved it. It’s great discourse and even when my dislike of Su gets going you still have great takeaways that I can definitely agree with.

Thank you so much! Oh yeah, I can't see why people would dislike Korra's diplomatic stance, I mean, that's clear character growth. And she sounds a lot more like a mature Avatar that way. Nad honestly, the whole drama just gives the spotlight to the characters which I'm in love with, specially in this season: Kuvira, Su, Asami, her dad, all of them. I appreciate this focus so much this season. And thank you! Yes, I understand how Su can get you on your nerves, but I really do like it when good characters are given flaws like this and certain type of darkness that it makes you understand and even empathize with the villain a lot more.

Hey Diego! Great reaction, especially in the intermission and the later observations. I genuinely love these reactions of yours not only for your excellent insight and analysis but also because it makes me think back and look at some stuff from a different angle (Like, honestly, when I watched it way back then, I didn't like Kuvira that much compared to say Amon or Zaheer but she really, really grew on me later on, especially given the amazing voice acting Zelda Williams did for the character.). Like you mentioned, and very much like others in this Book, this episode is rife with surprisingly mature issues: geopolitics and governance with Su and Kuvira, misuse of technology with Varrick (Good catch of the same heavy drone sound that Vaatu's beams made!), difficult familial dynamics with both Kuvira and Asami (She truly does need a hug! And yes, Hiroshi resembling Hayao Miyazaki was a deliberate choice.), trusting leaders and friends with Bolin and Varrick again etc. On a funnier note, I remember Zhu Li turning on Varrick was indeed shocking but not that surprising. The next episode is something completely different so I am looking forward to see your reaction! Keep it up! Also, Varrick seems to have discovered a totally new branch of science: spirit science! Yesss, it's all super mature, it definitely feels like the show itself grew up, and it's telling it all from very emotional places from the characters, which makes it much more enjoyable and rewarding imo. it’s not that su thinks that violence is the answer to all conflict it’s that kuvira is a literal dictator and mass manipulator who has already set up concentration camps and “conquered” cities. there’s no talking to someone like that, as korra soon found out. I completely understand where she was coming from and honestly she was right. although, it is nice to see korra be willing to talk things out instead of fighting.
@darquidarqui
@darquidarqui 2 жыл бұрын
The thing is following though: Su wants to protect the city from yes, clearly a dictator. However, did she ever think about the consequences of demolishing not just any army, but an empire army. That would literally be a declaration of war, meaning there would be a literal fight in which lives are at stake, and Zaofu has everything to lose.. What Su ordered Korra to do is to literally let her people unprotected and fall into the path of violence, even though that's not really her goal, cuz she wants Kuvira out of the way. Yes, a diplomatic stance is not that strong against a dictator figure like Kuvira, however, Korra is a much better example at trying to solve stuff here. Demolishing Kuvira's armies could've resulted into a far worse outcome.

Others said that this is the episode that Korra started to be a passive character of the series and becomes just reactionary than an active player of the story. I don't want to spoil more, I will wait for your thoughts until the season discussion. Haha. However, Beifong family drama am I right?! Ahhaha they seems to be attracting so much of that. Haha! I do always wonder what if Suyin didnt refused the position and took over Ba Sing Se and crowned as queen.. will she bring back the walls up of Ba Sing Se? Fight back against bandits? Will she becomes a dictator too given her nature? I always thought that she has this modern ideologies that lean toward technological advancements and abolishing the monarchy idea... I feel like if she steps up, let her ideals change the archaic ways of Ba Sing Se and have the full force of her army led by Kuvira, they could've made more progress over Earth Kingdom in a few years more than the progress Fire Nation achieved over 100 years. If only Suyin made that active choice. This is why I understood that Raiko turned to her first than anyone else (after all, Republic City is part of the Earth Kingdom and Raiko understood that he's still inexperienced running a Nation). By not taking an active approach she let loose a weapon that is now wreaking havoc all over Earth Kingdom. My point is, all this conflict the Earth Kingdom is experiencing after the Zaheer incident was Suyin's fault. Hahaha
@darquidarqui
@darquidarqui 2 жыл бұрын
She was reactionary in season 3 most of the time. And how is that a flaw? The thing is: this is not Su's fault, like at all. Her mistake was towards Kuvira. It was HOW she declined her power, not the fact that she declined it. She initially declined it, Kuvira tried to reason with her, and Su said "no" in a very violent and challenging way that Kuvira was disappointed and then felt like she was not the right leader. And besides, it was not Su's responsibility to take Ba Sing Se, it was a suggestion. Yes, she can take those ideals to be a "beacon of modern progress", but really, why is she obligated to do that? That's her decision. She has a great city in control and it's perfectly fine to remain that way. The problem, really, is Kuvira's approach to solve this. And well, Kuvira's thirst of power and control is quite apparent. Like, here's the thing: if Su takes Ba Sing Se, Kuvira's armies rise, because more territory, more population, more jobs, and therefore more people for Kuvira to work with, and who's to say that Kuvira won't want more control then? That's the thing, if Su takes Ba Sing Se, there's no guarantee that Kuvira wouldn't make a move to achieve power.
@luwirap
@luwirap 2 жыл бұрын
@@darquidarqui i just feel like Su turned her back to the earth kingdom when it needs someone to take a stand for it. Its like the series showed Suyin made an indifferent act by refusing to take lead, it's like "I dont care if peole of earth kingdom goes wild, my city is the safest place to be and I will stay here and wait until someone steps up." Probably waiting for Korra to step up. It just feels like she is now taking action because it's kuvira who stepped up and suyin felt that kuvira is her responsibility. But if it was someone else, she's still probably cooped up feeling safe in his dome covered city with her exotic birds. Hahaha it's not like she offered help or other solution, she just flat out refused.
@darquidarqui
@darquidarqui 2 жыл бұрын
@@luwirap Ok, fair enough, she did refuse that power, and let's say she has that responsibility (which again, I disagree since it's actually kind of forcing someone to lead an entire kingdom, it's not like people wanted or voted for her), but OK, let's say she has power over the earth kingdom. I ask you once again: is there a guarantee that Kuvira won't rise to power? since she, as described by Su, went up quickly through the ranks, and her military grows therefore her potential for control grows and let's say she decided to help people, because let's not forget: there are citizens that actually like and even adore her. And let's say Kuvira is better seen as a leader than Su by the people. Kuvira rises to power. Is it Su's fault to bring someone like her? Cuz she was clearly close to her. I feel like this was inevitably going to happen.

@@darquidarqui i was expecting that maybe the leaders of Earth kingdom' cities just want someone to take a lead (semi-temporarily?) while they are figuring out what to do with the kingdom's power vaccum. You are probably right. In some way or another, Kuvira might still rise up to power. I just want to give Kuvira the benefit of the doubt that she might not. I think she sees Suyin as her mother, she respected her for so long when she saw how progressive the way Suyin runs a city. I think that Kuvira will not rise up to power with Suyin in the helm of the things. She will remain loyal and faithful to Suyin because i know that Kuvira respects power and authority. Kuvira just lost her respect of Suyin the moment Suyin did not step up in the occassion, so she instead stepped in and took that opportunity for power and authority instead. I believe that Kuvira is different from the 3 former villains of the series because unlike them who were heavily influenced by darkness and evil since the beginning, I think kuvira was nurtured and surrounded by good people, so she has seeds of goodness in her. It's just becomes twisted when she tasted the power and eventually gave in to the temptation, spiraling downwards. But anyhow, this is clearly an unpopular opinion. Hahaha yeah, I mean, that "demolish her armies, Korra" in this context straight up initiates a war, it's just not right. If she takes as a leader, I'm betting that Kuvira would still rise to power since she's very good at what she does, appreciated by Su, and she has thirst to have control
@tar-mairo
@tar-mairo 2 жыл бұрын
To be somewhat fair to Su, and it occurred to me literally while watching Diego's reaction, the flashback is set a bit after the Red Lotus emergence and Aiwei's betrayal, which has probably shaken up her attitudes and beliefs about personal relationships as well as her ability and competence to lead a society like Zaofu. That way, I somewhat understand that she would feel insecure and uncertain of her ideals or how to make them work on larger scale of something so big like the Earth Kingdom, so from that point of view she actually does make a good choice. It even touches on why contemporary Su is so bitter and extreme to a point, but I agree that ''demolish her armies'' is taking it way too far.

@@tobennauruakpa7480 can't really blame her because the threat is literally a dictator figure like, but the way Su reacts to situations has a long history, like, when Kuvira was explaining to Su in that flashback about the beacon of modern progress she seemed very enthusiastic, and all she got as an answer was a cold "the answer is no", like if Kuvira felt invalidated I feel. And demolishing armies right there with Kuvira's technology is just, well, the perfect catalyst to an even greater conflict. Doing things more diplomatically might be seen as character growth for Korra at first, but it's just not the right time for that. Kuvira made it clear she won't back down, Zaofu is surrounded. You remember when Avatar Roku told Firelord Sozin to stop occupying Earth Kingdom colonies? The Avatar does not ask, like Korra just did, not in a situation like this. It is to late for that. This was weakness and Kuvira can see it. In my humble opinion that is :)

Like, I find it super admirable what she's doing, but I can definitely see how it can be a naive decision to reason with such a stubborn mindset like Kuvira's (which is another reason why sort of reminds me of old Korra lol). Really intrigued to see the rest! Thank you so much Alex! 🙌🏻🔥

So I guess Aang telling Ozai to stop was weak too? The Avatar should always try first to solve it peacefully.

Hi, if you have a free space for another series on your channel one Korra has finished. Then I highly recommend these following anime franchises: * The Seven Deadly Sins * Demon Slayer * Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood * Overlord * My Hero Academia * Black Clover Judging by your reactions from your Korra reviews, I'm certain that you will enjoy these anime series. If you wish to have a short summary of each of these series, please let me know.

Hello there! Thank you so much dude! Actually, like I said a few videos ago, I'll be rewatching ATLA after Korra ends. Also, I'll be reacting to another chosen show simultaneously. But I'll definitely keep these in mind for later in the channel! I've only seen Fullmetal Alchemist out of these (really like it), and haven't heard about Overlord or Black Clover. Would love to hear more of them. Thank you so much!

@@darquidarqui Plots and categories: * The Seven Deadly Sins (Shounen/Fantasy based on arthurian legend (like King Arthur and the Knights of the round table.) Basically, Dragon Ball meets Arthurian legend.) * Demon Slayer (Shounen/Supernatural with Demons (or Japanese vampires, depending on your point of view.)) * Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood (Drama/Adventure with alchemy that actually works) * Overlord (Isekai inside a VMMORPG) * My Hero Academia (Shounen/Superpower with lots of superhero and Star Wars references) * Black Clover (Shounen/Fantasy with magic based world and a middle ages class system)

Fullmetal Alchemist 2003 version or Brotherhood? Because there is another anime from the same manga with a different ending.

What your opinion on the Seven Deadly Sins anime? Have you seen or heard of it before?

@@darquidarqui I know this sounds stupid when I say this. But why did you react Last Airbender first? I mean when she want to see the original show first? Also do you think that the Avatar fanchise is basically at more modern, american, and kid friendly version of Dragon Ball?

korra always out of tune for some reason or another, i mean, she means well, but results may vary. kinda not expected your reactions to her dad, thought you would be more merciful or something.

Yeah but in this season stuff in her past really took a toll in her, so much that her approach to solving stuff has changed, and well, because it's been well told, that's great character development. Hiroshi was a really despicable character who almost killed her daughter, and it's her father, I mean, pretty hard to forgive if you ask me. What Asami is doing is tremendous on an emotional level and has a very kind heart.

@@darquidarqui i know that korra's approached changed and evolved, i'm just amused as to how unfortunate her encounters are.(probably could have written better in last comment ahah) i meant when she needed to be calm and collected she wasn't and now where diplomacy should be almost irrelevant in the face of imminent danger she tries to talk; i'm just amused on the writing choices for her development(in a positive way)

@@villainreacts936 ohhh okok got it, thank you for clarifying 😅 oh yeah, I mean, now it's naive to have this approach given how dangerous Kuvira and the whole conflict is (and she has a positive experience with Kuvira and her approach to solving stuff has changed, so it was natural for her to do this you know), and you're right! her approaches haven't matched the situation and that just sucks for her. Intrigued to see what comes next!
