The villain in this story is clearly the adult who took advantage of two vulnerable and impressionable children, whose unstable home life made it easy to shift blame and create false scenarios. Their dad was doing the best he could. He didn't deserve to be viciously murdered, and these boys didn't deserve to be preyed upon by a wolf. Although Derek was diagnosed as a psychopath, that does not mean he would've gone on to live a violent life, as many psychopaths are non-violent. But Rick, who is undoubtedly one himself, knew exactly what to do to control Derek and Alex. He saw their bad traits and encouraged them to grow. Rick is the fuel that lit the fire. He's nothing but a damn pedophile who destroyed three lives. Hopefully, Derek and Alex will receive the therapy they need and understand what happened to them and how they can better themselves.

Sure, Terry never deserved this! But please don't minimize Derek's psychopathy. Psychopaths like him are born evil. This crime would never have happened without a boy like Derek. Ricky was the catalyst and exploiter, yes, and an evil man too. But I doubt he intended murder. He had nothing to gain from it except to draw attention to his own perverted deeds. Turning the kids against Terry was part of his grooming process to isolate them from their father and draw them closer to himself as a purported "rescuer." But I dare say Derek was at odds with his father anyway due to his own behavior, and Ricky's deliberate encouragement of any hostility ttriggered Derek into this crime. Poor Alex was manipulated all along and roped into this out of loyalty. I've no doubt Alex can be rehabilitated, but I wouldn't like to say the same for Derek. Psychopaths don't change. True, he may never be physically violent again, but he can still do a lot of harm in society without violence.

I was also groomed by pedophiles growing up and people don't understand how much it absolutely screws you up into adulthood and beyond. I'm 38 and still trying to unpack trauma from shit that happened when I was a pre-teen and young teen done to my by adults twice my age and older. And quite frankly, children have no business being tried as adults. Those boys were so impressionable, being pressured into adult decisions by a grown man who had one of them wrapped around his finger thinking he was in love with him. I have no doubt Rick thought he'd get custody of the boys after Terry was dead, or that the cops wouldn't look for them, and convinced them to kill their father.

i don't understand your issue with them being tried as adults? do you think they'd be able to receive the help they need before they were discharged at 18 if tried as youths? I get that you see them as victims (Alex I get Derek not so much) but surely you see the issue with letting them loose into the world at 18 as they are now? and I don't see significant progress being made in a few years tbh I see them creating more victims if that is what was actually done. I believe that too. Especially since one of them (I think Alex? I don't think he had the time to abuse Derek. I think he groomed Alex, and Derek is a budding psychopath. I think Derek was the mastermind and he involved the groomer, knowing it would help their case. Think about their dynamic. The moment Derek realized what was going on "not being groomed himself" he would have immediately went to his father, but he didn't. The groomer just liked having sex with kids. He ain't no killer. Trying to work and keeping an eye on the kids is not easy. I don't believe those boys would have done this had it not been for Chavis. Getting into trouble. Probably. But nothing like this. Alex had some issues with the law afterwards. But I hope they are doing well. The Hunt a Killer game sounds and looks like a barrel full of crazy monkeys of fun. I think I'd enjoy that game. I was terrible at games like Trivial Pursuit, or Name That Tune. This story was a doozie! Those boys were terrible. I wonder if they were offered therapy to work through their issues and rough starts in life. I really hope so. Their father just needed a good thorough tooth brushing. He didn't deserve for his life to be cut short. Excellently organized and narrated story! I can't believe it's Wednesday already!

Wow CR, you did a fantastic job researching this story. There are so many twists and turns to this truly heartbreaking story. Those boys were failed by everyone. First their parents, though Terry tried to make up for it, then that POS Ricky who definitely groomed those boys, and then the justice system. I pray the boys are doing well now since they were dealt a terrible hand in their younger years.

Derek wasn't a psychopath at all. I really think Rick killed Terry for Terry finding out about their sexual relationship. No wonder why he nailed the windows shut and had double locks on all the doors. I bet Terry warned Rick he was going to the police to file charges of rape to Alex and Rick wasn't gonna let that happen. Pretty sure the prosecutors planted evidence of the flame accelerant on the shoes.

Hullo Crimey! Hope you’re doing well my friend 🙂 I heard their story before, but you told it differently and very well ((as usual 😉)).. a bizarre and tragic story for sure.. a single parent has a lot to juggle, it’s terrible to have someone that was supposed to be a friend and in the support network for him, end up grooming, abusing and manipulating his kids.. these stories always break my heart.. to be killed for senseless reasons by the very child you have been doing all this work FOR.. just awful.. Pssst.. Florida is attached to a few other states, but it’s still the most bizarre place I’ve ever seen 😝 and it’s reputation is absolutely earned! It’s weird, hot as hell and flat flat flat! Also, things want to kill you when you’re distracted by the oppressive humidity 🐊🐊
