With the 2022 Winter Olympics just a few months away and with 100s of NHL stars expected to represent their countries at the Men's Hockey competition, much of the recent talk surrounding the event has regarded the tournament's hosts instead.
Since China's National Hockey Team were given an automatic place at the competition as they are hosting the event and given that China has never competed at the Olympic Hockey tournament before due to their 32nd world ranking, there are some legitimate concerns as to whether China will be completely humiliated by their NHL-calibre opponents at the event, let alone whether they actually deserve a place in the tournament!
So who is set to represent China at the Olympics, and why is the team so bad? Well in today's video, let's find out!

But we're talking about a situation where this team could very easily not even score a goal. Their participation would be a joke and embarrassment for the Olympics and for hockey in general. If they earned their way in, then whatever happens, happens. But being appointed a spot, well, it's going to be ugly.

Hello, as someone who actually lives here in China. I think I can provide some real insight into this matter. As of right now, Ice hockey is most popular in Beijing and the three northeastern provinces of Heilongjiang, Jilin, and Liaoning. But ice hockey's popularity is slowly growing nationwide, and a large part of the reason it is growing is because of Kunlun Red Star. Many of the Kunlun Red Star matches are broadcasted on national TV here (CCTV 5). And Kunlun Red Star have played home matches in different parts of China from Beijing and even Harbin in the north to Shanghai and Shenzhen in the south. The result of this is that ice hockey has been slowly growing in national popularity. Last year, the yearly semi professional national ice hockey tournament in China was even hosted in the southwestern province of Yunnan, and millions of people from all over China tuned into the tournament. So what's my point. Ice hockey is growing in popularity here in China, and millions of Chinese children are taking up the sport, and what is needed to take the sport to the next level and get the ball rolling from hockey being a regional sport to a national sport is a major tournament like the Olympics. And this is why it's very important to have the Chinese Hockey team participate in the Olympics. I have heard a lot recently that China's hockey team is going to be blown out and they shouldn't compete because it's going to be an embarrassment, but I think all of these arguments are completely missing the point. Here in China the media talks about the Olympics and the ice hockey team a lot, and even here in China the media and all the hockey fans know that the Chinese team will probably be blown out in every game. But that doesn't matter. The children here who love ice hockey will be watching the games and they will see players like Mathews, McDavid, and Crosby, playing competitive games in China. They will see their favourite stars playing against Chinese players, and this will let them dream that it is possible for anyone, even if you come from China to play alongside or against the best players in the world. China's potential 3 blowout losses will still expose hundreds of millions of Chinese fans to the best of the best the sport has to offer. And let them dream that maybe one day they can play for the national team at the Olympics. If the Chinese team are pulled from the tournament, it would destroy all progress made over the past 5 years, and it would eternally relegate ice hockey to a regional hobby sport, as millions of Chinese hockey fans and potential players will feel nothing but bitterness and disappointment in the sport. So it doesn't matter if the games are all blowouts. The goal of the IIHF is to grow the game in China, and featuring a Chinese team, playing against the best players in the world is the best opportunity to do just that. 中国加油🇨🇳

I think that once the game is well in hand the NHL players will take the foot off the gas. No one gains anything by deliberately humiliating a team. Yes, there is the aggregate score, but how is it fun to do that to someone? The NHL players are there for the Olympic experience, part of that is (or should be) sportsmanship. Would the Chinese people appreciate that? If Canada was leading China 7-0 and they eased off would China see the sportsmanship in that?,

I couldn't disagree more. If the Chinese Ice Hockey Federation wants to compete in this tournament, knowing full well they could lose all of their games by at least 10 goals, let them. They could have declined to ice a team in the competition, or still could. China has never played in the ice hockey competition of the Olympics. They play in lower divisions of IIHF tournaments. I don't know if this would grow the game in China but I think their federation should have the choice to compete (or not). I don't think the IIHF should make this decision. If they didn't want this, they shouldn't allow host countries to automatically qualify.

Yes, the only way I see this not working is if China does not have enough players eligible to play via years played in KHL or of citizenship status tp be considered a team ands has to on technicality have to forfeit the right to play. It was exactly the same story 4 years ago in Pyeongchang. The Korean national hockey teams (men‘s and women‘s) were nonentities. No, the fact is that the teams that just "missed out" had opportunities to make the tournament and lost out to the worst teams that did make it. The number of berths, plus one (the host country), is known well in advance for all sports. In water polo, field hockey, or soccer, there is a team that misses out that is usually better than the host country, but it is a non issue because it happens all the time. Why it is such a big issue here is beyond me.

If any of USA, Canada, Sweden, Russia, Finland, et al, played FULL TILT against Big China's team for 60 minutes, indeed the scores will reach record-breaking numbers. These IIHF rankings are kinda misleading because until this year the China team was actually Chinese. Now this ”Chinese” team is just full of mercenaries from Canada who have played in the KHL for a couple of years. This ”China” team could actually defeat the likes of Norway and Latvia so I doubt they will get ”absolutely humiliated” at the Olympics. I think the real problem with this China team is that this is allowed to happen by the IIHF. They should stricten their rules. No one should be able to play for a foreign national team after playing in that country for a few years. This practice of naturalizing mercenaries is very unfair towards other countries whose national teams are made of their own domestic talent.

TLDR: Removing the Chinese team is against the spirit of the Olympics. I don't understand why this is even a conversation for the iihf. From the Chinese perspective, ok I get it for all the reasons stated, but from the olympic games perspective, the hosting team always gets a free pass to enter. It doesn't matter how bad they are, they should still get to compete. It would do a lot to help build hockey as a sport in China. It's nothing new that hosting teams get roasted in international sports competitions; the point is to host a fair competition and not to remove a team just because they have no chance of being competitive.

There is one issue with removing the Chinese team from the Olympics that no one has brought up: it's unfair to do it *now*. If it had been done before the qualifiers, the IIHF could at least have granted them the chance to qualify. They wouldn't have succeeded, but they would at least have had the opportunity. There's also the issue of possible Canada-USA collusion: prearranging that their group game go to overtime to ensure that both teams get byes to the quarter-finals (assuming they both beat Germany in regulation and obliterate China as expected). The best solution I can think of: bring Norway to Beijing a few days before the opening ceremony. Have them play a best-of-3 qualifying match against China. Winner gets the spot in Group A. You can even call them official Olympic games (you can start events before the opening ceremony as long as medals are not awarded).

So even if they made an "exception" to the rule for the Ice Hockey team (and granted them dual), the olympic commitee still may not allow them as it isnt following China's "standard protocol". This would also setup a bad precedence, as other countries could also start issuing "temp citzenships" to bring in better players.

Before Nagano Olympic Games 1998, Japan collected a national team of international players, who have family ties in Japan. I remember seeing in Swedish television one player of that team, Shin Yahata Larsson. Japan's project is different than Chinese, because they were already relatively on higher level. But there is that similarity that always every host country in every sports tries to maximize their effort to be in top form in home games. I believe that in most cases it is just a short-sighted project. For example Japanese hockey, IIHF gave earlier to Asia one place in World Championships top division. Those days it was always Japan, team which according to skills should have been played in lower division, but it retained its place for many years. Getting tougher games didn't improve them, because it was artificial solution by IIHF. Although I love in FIFA football World Championships that there are teams from every continent, at least now in hockey it just doesn't work. You can give a fish or teach them how to fish. Giving fish has not been a succesful solution in improving playing skills, but maybe it works in marketing hockey to Asian markets. I would be very happy to see teams like Japan and China in top division. Nothings stops them, but first they should have genuine hockey culture. It would be a great thing for *international* hockey.

It is tradition to allow the hosting country to have their teams inserted in the Olympic games even when they normally would not make it past trials. Getting to play at the Olympics isn't about winning or even putting on a good show, it's about showing pride for your country. Even though China will most likely be embarrassed in the few games they will play, just being able to play is good enough. We let Korea field their teams in 2018 and they were summarily embarrassed as well but they didn't care, it was special for them. There are hundreds of Olympians each Olympics that make it through trials and have zero chance of even getting close to being competitive and their "embarrassing" performance isn't embarrassing to them because all they wanted to do was be there and say they made it. That's something you got to understand over the idea that the Olympics are all about winning and looking good just because America, Canada, and Russia dominate it most years. Unfortunately for China, the NHL is allowing their players to play this time around, but I still do not think they should be barred if the country wants their team in it. All I got to say to anyone who is demanding them to be removed is if you actually love the sport, you would understand that allowing host teams like China and Korea to play in the Olympics may inspire a whole generation in their countries to pick up the sport and become good at it.

Hey, Germany's been getting a lot better at hockey on an international level. Not on the same level as Sweden or Finland, but they've come a long way since the 90s! And, the DEL is the 2nd-highest drawing league in Europe, so there's that too.

Germans are quietly becoming a lot better at hockey not gonna lie. I mean a 5 on 3 game where the Germans just have Seider, Stutzle and Draisaitl with Grubauer in net could probably mop this team. Also shoutout to my boy Konrad Abeltshauser, dude is an absolute tank

@@ariarion137 lol no they’re not. Germany is good, but Sweden has one of the best national teams in the world and there are tons of current Swedes who are absolute studs in the NHL. Nick Bäckström, Willy Nylander, Hedman, Erik Karlsson, Filip Forsberg, Elias Pettersson, Landeskog, Dahlin, etc.

China should still play, instead of another year of Olympic hockey drama. The previous 2018 Pyongcheong Olympics, the South Korean women's team formed a unified Korean team, bringing in North Korean players. China can still ice a team, although there is a very good chance that will lose games by double digits, just like in Olympic qualifiers.

The unified Korean team was hardly a success though. The best teams were in one division (last place pool A had a -14 goal differential & hammered the #1 team from pool B in the first playoff round. Korea was 0-3 with 1 goal for and 19 against in the weak pool.

So, while it may be ugly, it sounds like the first two lines are at least players that know what they are getting them selves into. As for the third and fourth line? Well….. hope that they have some extra players around. I have a feeling that if the other teams don’t let up physically, someone could seriously get hurt.

And let's remember that the Olympic system means that every team makes it to at least one playoff game. That's 4 games of agony for China.
