One more reason to love this band: Even the covers you choose may teach us important lessons. And in this one is a lesson many needed - and still need - to learn: nothing is worth the destruction of innocent lives. As old as this song is, sharing the story today gives more people a chance to discover it and hopefully take that lesson to heart.

The modern soldier being pulled by the vest was a nice touch. Considering the song was written in protest of the Viet Nam conflict, that small clip updates the song perfectly.

I could see this as a setting for a story. It would be about a mechanical soldier and the wars he serves in, and ends up outliving any other soldiers in the conflicts. He sees the pointless repetition of war.

I think the movie has already been made: Soldier (1998). they are not robots but the same idea. The "Writer David Peoples (who co-wrote Blade Runner) considers the film to be a "spin-off sidequel" to Blade Runner and contains a handful of references to it. However, beyond this, it has not been recognized as part of the Blade Runner franchise in any official capacity." The quote is from bladerunner.fandom.com/wiki/Soldier I like Soldier better than Blade Runner.
@matthewgerdes91843 жыл бұрын
Yall should read the eternal mercenary. It's the story of the soldier that drove his spear into Jesus on the cross and became cursed to be a soldier until the second coming. The book is about the 2000 years he spent fighting in wars. Great series and absolutely massive in scale some 50 books if I remember correctly.
@samuelglueck69113 жыл бұрын
Demon Four by David Mace has an interesting subversion of this, insofar as the titular demon (basically, an underwater six million dollar man, the brain of a mortally wounded veteran surgically removed and grafted into the control mechanisms of a robotic submarine) recognizes that the war is pointless and wants to desert, but can't, since for all its power, demon doesn't have hands and needs access to the military's support infrastructure to keep replenishing the chemical nutrients, preservatives and antirejection drugs in its brain jar.

Now i don't live in the west or where english is an official language. So i have never heard this song until now unlike many other seem to have. But i am truly glad i did hear it at last. War may be the biggest tragedy mankind has ever seen. Because people who have never known and who had never had a quarrel with each other, kill one another for the gain of a few. And most of them aren't even aware of it. I hope this mindless slaughter that is war one day ceases to exist.

Bet most pacifigags would enjoy this, until they saw my story about how the mountain people ripped the valley people to shreds....
@admiralgree38733 жыл бұрын
Self defense and murder are two different things. The song is talking about un-provoked violence, not self-defense. If the mountain people had attacked the valley first, then sure it's justified. It's all situational, and you don't need to call everyone who likes the song a pacifag just because you can't understand the simple message.
