@@fruitascension5089 50/50 can be an assortment of starches and non starchy veggies but Mary's Mini.. you pick ONE starch for 10 days and you stick with it along with non starchy veggies. Mary's Mini is also a 50/50 plate of starch and veggies. Hope this helps

Joey, thank you, you just saved my life. I’ve been swimming in a sea of recipes that was serving as an excuse for me to NOT stick to this perfect lifestyle. I’ve lost 18 lbs but felt exhausted struggling with buying different groceries and cooking different recipes than my family. Now, I’ll start a Mary’s (Simple) Mini😃 and get on track without drowning. Thank you so much! You’re my new BFF! 😁

Lori, there is something about us that makes us want to make every meal look ready for photographs and instagram. When we do that, we get way too far from what we originally started this way of eating for in the first place. Like you just mentioned, we have to focus on just the basics. An elaborate plant based meal should be a treat once a week, not the norm. I really had to learn that all over again. But once I did, the scale started moving again. Sometimes we just need a little refresher, right? Thanks so much for watching.

Great informative video, Joey! I also had the scales move during my (imperfect) Mary’s Mini in January and look forward to doing it again with you in February. It really grounded me and made me pause and think about everything I ate. And planning was super simple! Yes, I still made other meals for my family members, which wasn’t easy, but I stayed strong. Your Facebook group is the best! 💪🤩

Hi Linda. I was amazed how just going back to one starch and some simple veggies caused the scaled to start moving again. It makes sense when I think about it. So proud of you for staying strong and not letting the bad habits of family members become your bad habits. Even if we slip up at times, if we can stay on track for 90 percent of the time, we are going to be good. Thanks so much for watching.

Hi Joey, thanks for the great content. After being vegetarian for years, then going vegan a year ago, I finally convinced my husband to try the starch solution with me! And we are kicking it off with a Mary’s Mini! I am excited for this because we haven’t achieved the weight loss we desire from eating vegan. That being said, my husband does love the mock meats, processed snacks and nuts! So we are going full bore on this. I need to lose 12 lbs and he needs to lose 20. So I am a faithful watcher of you guys and really appreciate the good honest information that you share. Wish us luck and keep up the good work on your channel. Blessings 👍🌈🙋‍♀️🙏🥦🍎

I lost 3.6 during the last mini. I probably could’ve done better but I ate sweet potatoes a couple of times. I’m starting the rice mini today. I’m wondering if carrots are allowed? They are essentially like sweet peas. My plan is to eat only brown rice for my mini for the entire 10 days. I’m thinking of just making it for 2 weeks (14 days instead of 10). I’ll revisit that after seeing how I feel after the 10 days. Thanks for the motivation & support.

Hi Brenda. Carrots are a non-starchy veg on McDougall programs. So you would have to choose one of the starches from the starch list. Keep me updated on your progress, I cant wait to hear about it. Thanks so much for watching.

Thank you, Joey! You inspired me to get back to basics. I've been vegan since 5/31/2017 & vegetarian for 20+ years prior to that. I EASILY lost 30 pounds when I became vegan, but over the past pandemic year I've slowly regained 20 pounds by eating vegan junk food, Thai take out, over consuming vegan goodies and YOU'RE RIGHT! Mary's Mini WORKS! I, like you, eat potatoes ALL the time, so the rice was a lovely and delicious change. I've lost 5 pounds. I'm on day 5 and just cooking up a batch of "fried" rice. Your lime, cilantro rice with the bay leaf was DELISH. Thank you. Will make over and over. Thanks for always providing great content. I also enjoy your closet, gazebo, etc DIY videos. Thanks again. Keep it up!
@PlantBasedDads
@PlantBasedDads 3 жыл бұрын
Vallory. Thanks so much for all that. I never known if people are going to be turned off by the DIY videos I post but to me, if you want something done right, you have to do it yourself. So, I like sharing those experiences. We are loving the gazebo right now here in Phoenix. Ok, so I also went vegetarian 14 years ago. Back then, there was no junk food to eat. But as you know, vegan junk food now mimics meat eater junk food and we are all getting just as unhealthy as they are. So, we really have to buckle down with eating better. I am glad I found this way of living and I am so glad you are on the journey with me. I think the Marys Mini really just reminds us that we are putting too much thought into every meal, and that we just need to keep it simple . Thanks so much for watching.

That is my favorite dressing and this coming Mondays video will feature my two favorite winters salads with that dressing being on one of them. You could do the maple dijon dressing on Marys mini if you do just a small amount. Dr. McDougall says no sugar on Marys Mini, but Mary says it's ok in small amounts. If it helps you eat salad, I think it's fine but just limit it. Thanks so much for watching.

For some reason coffee/tea, triggers hunger especially if I have a cuppa in the afternoon, hour later I’m starving. I did have to give up coffee I think bc of the acid? It upsets my stomach and have to put food in it. I’m 64. My eldest, 30, the same. But the more I drink the more I feel hunger. I never felt for MYSELF that it warded off hunger

Thank you so much for this video Joey! I definitely want to try Mary's Mini with everyone in Feb (have just applied to your fb group). I have been on starch solution from 01.01.21. I feel great, but no massive (or any) weight loss really. I think fruit may be to blame, but I am not ready to give it up or even reduce on a permanent basis. But 7-10 days sounds like an interesting idea!. Thank you so much for explaining the principles in the video. Very helpful as I don't own the book yet.

I know Dr. McDougall poo-poos it but isn’t there a lot of arsenic in most brown rice and the recommendation is to cook it like pasta in a lot of water and drain the water off, not in the Instant Pot? I myself would not do a rice mini given this newer information about arsenic but that’s me. I gained weight on one week of a potato mini. Did not work for me. I have lost 60 lb on McDougall Maximum Weight Loss plan - 50/50 plate. Whatever works!

Very nice video. I love all your content. :) You don’t need to eat overt fats for digestion or any other reason though! Dr. McDougall talks about this a lot, and he advises people on the Maximum Weight Loss Program (the 50/50 plate program) to cut out all nuts, seeds, avocado and tofu while they're trying to lose weight. He even has talks on people eating an all-potato diet for a year. I’m sure his dietician Jeff Novick has written and talked about it as well. And of course Chef AJ hasn’t eaten any nuts or seeds for around ten years. The fat you eat is the fat you wear, so that’s probably the reason Mary’s Mini has worked so well for you. Anyway, keep up the good work! :)

Thank you Joey for a very informative video. I started the starch solution in march last year and I lost ca 45 lbs but from november the scale didn’t move. I even gained 4 pounds between december and januari. I was thinking about Mary’s mini for a while now and you presentation came in the right time. I was wondering about the number of meals you eat. In the video it looked like you eat only two each day though you mentioned three meals of the same kind. Batch cooking sounds like a great idea and rice will be my starch. Thank you also for the meal suggestions. They are so easy to prepare and the ingredients are available here in Sweden where I live. I’ll just finish the potatos left in my house and from 21st I join the Mary’s mini challenge. Do I have to log in to your group or I just follow your FB?
@PlantBasedDads
@PlantBasedDads 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Michaela, I actually ate more than 3 meals a day. I ate the rice between meals also. I did "Batch cook" in that I made a lot of rice because both Tim and I were eating it. But I still had to cook every other day. I know rice doesn't stay fresh very long in the fridge so I didnt want to make all of it on Sunday night like I would normally do with potatoes. Also, cooked a HUGE amount of fried rice the second time and it all went in 48hours. It goes fast for sure. I was very excited to see the scale start moving again. Really, this just taught me that I was eating too much on Starch Solution and that I need to keep my meals simple. I mean, its the same base food as SS, but I think I tend to overeat on SS. You do not have to do the FB group unless you feel you want to get some support or be surrounded with others doing this way of eating. You can always just chat with me on here and I will always answer. Thanks so much for watching.

@@PlantBasedDads Thank you so much for the reply! Very helpful! 😊 I’m 67 and also a volume eater and I’ve lost weight while being on ss with as much as 70% starches and even enjoyed home baked bread. I need to reset just because even healthy fats can be addictive to me. Thank you again for your channel and the support we all get from you! 🌱

Another question from around 7:30. Why no beans? Aren't they starches too? And when you say no tofu, what about soy milk? They are both from soy beans. Thanks. And did you mention rice?
@PlantBasedDads
@PlantBasedDads Жыл бұрын
Hi Doug. Originally, beans were not part of Mary's Mini. There was an update to the program years later and I made a new video about it with all the changes so check out that video. In the new program you can have beans as your starch. Soy is not permit because it gets 50% of its calories from fat. So no soy, tofu or anything soy based on the mini.

Thanks for the video. I think it’s good for people who have never done MM. If you have fallen off the wagon, MM is a great way to reset. One e thing I don’t understand is why you say peas are not included. I watched Mary’s podcast and peas are allowed, not just the ones in the pods but proper frozen peas.
@PlantBasedDads
@PlantBasedDads 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Samara. I said that because on the other McDougal programs, peas outside the pod are starches. I am sure thats what Mary meant to say on the video where she mentions peas, but she doesn't get specific on them. For many people transitioning back and forth in SS and MM, it makes sense to treat them as a starch since they can not be eaten in the pod. That is how I interpret peas on MM. It has to be the same as Starch Solution. There is just no way that one of his programs treats peas as a starch and the other program treats it as a non starch. I agree with you that MM is a great way to get back on track with eating HCLF diet. It really helped me understand what I was doing wrong. Thanks so much for watching.

Hi Deb. I used a variety of rice throughout the week. I did brown rice at first, then white rice, then brown again. It worked good for me. I have not seen anywhere that it had to be one rice or the other. It is different with potatoes because there is such a different between sweet potatoes and white potatoes that it's easy to look forward to switching and overeat. Rice is just rice so I cant imagine looking forward to it being a different color and overeating, right? I think you can mix them up like I did for sure. Thanks so much for watching.
