Having vestibular issues makes my learning slower because your brain has to compensate, but skating helps with balance. I appreciate the breakdown and babysteps. I am still working on 3 turn for 9 months now.

0:55 is a great demonstration of a two foot turn from backwards to forward. Play it at .25 times speed and you can examine Coach Lloyd's form. Notice how he pivots on the heel of the blade and notice how aggresively he lifts the toe, and look how the blades seem to just fly over the ice as he does that. You can also examine how his feet work together to change position from left foot away from the camera to left foot towards the camera. He's going to turn towards his left outside edge, I'm thinking the turn he does would be called a "backwards left outside two foot turn." He prepares for the turn by placing his left foot forward and his right foot trailing. That way when he pivots the feet are apart and they don't interfere with each other. At the end of the turn his left foot is still leading and his right foot is trailing, they basically spin in place independently and without shifting position, just a half-spin in place. I don't think I've heard anyone explain it like I just did by observing coach here.

THANK YOU SOO MUCH for this! This move should be taught the same exact time people learn how to do a swizzle backwards. I’ve been skating since 2018 and am JUST learning how to do this.

This is the one move on the ice that came easily to me. Hockey coaches will use this stop a lot, it's a natural choice since they have no toe pick to drag when trying to stop backwards. When I was first watching those videos I was like "Ooooohhhh, that's so coooool, I've *got* to learn that!" Then I tried it and nailed it in just two or three tries and I've never found it a challange. I wish I could say that about any other skating move. The forward snowplow I had trouble learning, I don't think it's that easy, but I think maybe backwards is.

This is really helpful. Most videos on backwards stopping kind of just say “oh it’s the same as forwards!” except no it’s not, and anyway forwards is hard too! And backwards stopping is not in my group lesson curriculum but I feel so out of control skating backwards because I can’t stop and I can’t turn around, I can either run into the wall or fall down. So I will be using your wall method to learn during my next practice!

This tip is so real, I posted the video to my channel, but someone was going backwards ran into me and you could see him start to do the stop, but it was way too slow and he just hit me 😅

One thing Coach Lloyd doesn't demonstrate is that when doing the backwards snowplow stop you can take your time and cover some distance with the plow and that's really cool. Coach demonstrates that with the one foot stop but you can also do it with the two foot stop.

For some reason coaches don't teach this. I was doing all the single jumps and basic spin positions, when I had a lesson with a dance coach. When I stopped on my toes, he was like, what the hell did you do?? And he taught me in literally 3 mins how to stop properly. It's pretty simple, no idea why coaches don't teach it.

The one foot stop that Coach Lloyd demonstrates is similar to a "tango stop." Play 0:50 at 0.25x speed and look how Coach Lloyd strikes a dramatic pose and freezes his arms and body and posture in place and plows across the ice like a statue, giving a regal quality.

I remember at one point my most comfortable stop was two foot 3 turn> back stop. Its a more comfortable foot position.

By "back stop" I think you mean "toe pick drag stop." That is my skating buddy's favorite move on the ice. He does it all the time with a variety of embellishments and flair. I try to teach him the back snowplow stop but he can't resist dragging his toe picks.

WWD-40 elbow drop....TRLOL. (It's WWF). I just blew myself clear out of the rink again last week. I was skating backwards fast and I tried to go near the wall to clear some public skaters and my heel hit the wall, I went flying backwards and blew right out of the rink door. I hit my elbow and the back of my upper arm hard on the edge of the door and man did it hurt. I almost never leave the ice after a fall but I did on that one and at first I was writhing in agony and I had to ask my skating buddy to buy me a diet coke. I was able to continue skating after 20 minutes. Bruises on my arm, elbiow and hip and I was sore for a few days but otherwise uninjured.
