Thank you for you honest evaluation of CGM. I have 2B in the back up to 3A in front. I have been modified CGM from the very beginning. You are correct that they are WAY to many rules. One size does not fit all so people should find what fits your hair. Even my hairdresser advised me that going for days and days without SHAMPOOING your hair was bad for your scalp. I do like to cowash once in a while but I make sure that I use an actual shampoo to cleanse my scalp and a sulfate every month to get rid of buildup. I think a lot of people want it to be all or nothing with the CGM and it doesn't have to be. Hair should be fun and not a chore. As always, great job!

One reason CGM was so hard for me is because my hair was already healthy when I started. I hadn't used excessive heat, dying, sulfates or silicones, or really anything bad before I switched to CGM. The issues that led me to CGM was tangling, which people said can be a result of having wavy hair that's acting straight. So I got on CGM and nothing fixed it. I knew I had wavy hair (wavy when wet) and I could sustain waves without product for a little. But I still need to detangle throughout the day, which ultimately ruins my waves. I only finger comb, but to go without detangling throughout the day would be detrimental. I've done it -- it's a bird's nest behind my neck if I try to wait until wash day to detangle. When looking it up and asking people on reddit.. the only thing I ever find is get a hair cut, add moisture, or that's just life for some people with fine hair. Well, I've done the first two and now I'm at a loss. The only time I don't get tangles is directly after a haircut with professional heat styling using a blow dryer. I'm at a loss and while I continue the few CGM methods I use, I don't know where else to look.

I kinda have the same problem except i don't brush it I leave it till next wash . Even when i put lots of conditioner on it is bound to tangle. I don't know what they mean when say add moisture? Like deep conditioner?

Maybe try using a detangling styler I your hair as a leave In , I know Shea moisture has one that might be helpful for your hair

Also when you go to wash it maybe try an oil treatment as a pre poo to help the tangles ease a bit

I agree. Cowashing is no good for my fine wavy hair. Too heavy. I have had better success getting more definition using curly shampoo with sulphate, etc than going full CGM with products.

I agree with you 100%. I’ve learned a lot about taming frizz and defining my waves with the CGM, but every time I’ve tried to go full CGM my hair has ended up greasy with lots of build up and I ultimately lose definition. I need a sulfate in my life every once in a while!

The one thing that bothers me the most in curly girl method is not brushing hair in between washes. I wash my hair 3-4 times a week, especially in summer. Theres a lot of dust and pollution and i just cannot go without brushing it for so many days.

I figured out that my hair is wavy last year so I started to follow the curly girl method (well sort of) to be honest at the beginning I thought I had straight hair that was just damaged and frizzy, so I started using products that were more natural and then at some point I realized that I might have wavy hair (I actually have 2a-2b hair) Just like you I never completely followed the CGM, for example I like to dry brush my hair before I wash it using my tangle teezer. I also use sulfate free shampoo about twice a week and I only occasionally Cowash. And as I am a student and on a budged, I do not use fancy hair products most of the stuff I'm using is CG approved, but its often not specifically made for curly or wavy hair. And I make my own flaxseed/xantan gum hair gel.

I’ve never done strict curly girl but I’ve applied some of the techniques to my routine and it’s really helped me break bad habits I picked up from my mom who doesn’t have the same texture as me (I’m 2c-3a loose curls from my dad’s stronger genetics, she has 2b/2c waves shes straightened every day for 30 years lol) It’s really really changed my hair health and confidence/perception around my curls and I’m so happy with it, I no longer feel the need to align myself with western beauty standards to feel good about myself

Also your videos I find are much more informative and while we don’t have the exact same hair texture I find I can use the same or similar methods and products! You’re very wise and level headed, a rare gem on KZbin, very refreshing to watch

I just found you. I am glad I did. I have been back and forth on the curly girl method for over a year. My hair is wavy. I agree with everything you said. I can’t cowash, I love dry brushing my hair. My hair has never been particularly dry, if anything it’s too soft. Lol. It seems my texture is more like yours than any other I’ve seen on here.

I like my wavy hair, but I just can't get with not brushing it. It kills me to sleep and wake up with tangles. And I'm not down to wet it just to refresh it. I also feel like not brushing it makes my roots oilier. When I brush it, the oil travels down the hair shaft, so my hair can last for a week. Brushing it also adds some volume at the top of my head so my hair isn't flat. So many issues, but I'm so addicted to seeing those curls form! Not sure what to do :(

Could you elaborate on what steps are unnecessary if you have wavy hair? What parts of the method do you think wavies should leave out of their routines? I currently have issues with lack of definition and weighed down hair, and I'm not sure how I should modify my current routine. As of right now, I shampoo and condition twice a week (sulfate and silicone free), then while my hair is still wet I apply a leave in conditioner, a curl enhancing cream, then a lightweight gel. I scrunch out the excess water with a t-shirt and let it air dry. I will occasionally clarify my hair with a sulfate shampoo to remove product buildup that my normal shampoo doesn't.
@SuhannaDeSilva5 жыл бұрын
All you need to do is shampoo, condition and apply gel. Leave in and curl cream isn’t completely necessary and can weigh your hair down. Also make sure you’re clarifying your scalp regularly.

I'm just trying to get an answer: I've been on transition and already did a BIG chop, but everyone says brushing your hair with your hair dry is bad but when I tried to do it wet, it actually frizzes up my hair, when I do it dry it actually doesn't damage my hair so idk what to think :( My hair is 2c

If your hair isn’t dense and is fine to medium in texture you could probably get away with using a brush made for curly hair to gently dry detangle

I'm only about a month into the method and I'm starting to question if it's for me :/ I have 2b/2c hair and I feel like even if I go light on on products, my hair still looks oily/greasy near the roots, even when I give it a good wash with sulfate free shampoo. It's like I didn't even wash it! And mind you, this was also after I did the final wash and it still looked bad. Overall I'm not 100% happy... Just wondering if I should stick with it or go back to styling my hair before...

GRAMMY FLEXIN’ Tie your hair up at night with a satin scrunchie and sleep with a satin pillow case, or wrap your head with a satin scarf, or bonnet. Either one of these things will help to reduce frizz and tangles because they reduce friction when your hair rubs against your pillow, and tying your hair up will keep it from being all over the place which also leads to tangles. Hope this helps.
