"I'm 13 & very deep. Look how clever I am. See how clever & sophisticated I am? No, that's not pretentious contrivance, they're THEMES ! Behold my themes ! Are they not grand?" - Every Nolan Film Ever

I couldn't quite put it into words but I have been feeling this way about Christopher Nolan's films for years, and hearing someone finally attempt to disect the reasons as to why Nolan isn't as high and mighty as we all may initially think is cathartic. So far I think the only film I have seen from Nolan that I can unquestionably say I enjoy would be Oppenheimer, and that still carries certain baggage that being a Nolan film, such as inhuman dialogue and trying to push ideas more than a narrative. However it does have a strong enough foundation of an intriguing narrative and drama to where I can still enjoy what I am viewing. I can also find positives about the Dark Knight that allow me to still enjoy it but I agree that we are unwilling to criticize elements of it that are not deserving of praise. I really appreciate your willingness to speak your mind on films even if it goes against the grain. Good work Lumo.
@LUMOSHROOM Жыл бұрын
Undoubtedly two of the best films I have ever seen are The Prestige and Memento. So I know Nolan is capable of excellent storytelling. But it's weird how everyone praises him for The Dark Knight, Interstellar and Inception when those don't really hold a candle to his best work.
@YTHomer Жыл бұрын
@LUMOSHROOM Haven't watched those two yet, so I will have to do so to get a better understanding of Nolan as a director. Still, though you are correct about the strange things he gets praise on. I genuinely have met people who say Tenet is scientific and narrative genius, and I frankly don't get it.

I’ll push back on Inception’s characters being forgettable. If that’s not what you meant when asking if we remembered any of their names, then my apologies. Those characters were pretty distinct in the story. Leo, Ellen, and Watanabi’s character in particular had strong moral stances, philosophical stances, and/or reactions throughout the movie.

I agree the Dark Knight is highly overrated but I reach that conclusion for different reasons. And enjoy your longer stuff more but it's also good to be short and down to the point as well.

Unpopular opinion: It's not just the movie that's overrated, it's Heath ledger's performance. Heath ledger had at least five oscar-worthy performance is in his life, and most of them were vastly underappreciated. Right around the time when people were starting to appreciate how truly talented he was, he died. And the cultural guilt and macabre fascination with posthumous awards led us to not just view this as not just another heath ledger performance, but as his magnum opus, and no one seems to be able to admit that what he did with the joker is not impressive. It's simply a Tom waits impression, and he brought nothing new to the character other than mannerisms. No true depth, no hidden pain, no insinuations of personal back story with others, or even insinuations of relationships with any other human being other than himself. This was a one note joker, And you like that role for the same reason that we pronounce gif with a hard G, because everyone else is doing it too.

The Joker. How loyal his henchmen are to him. Not surprising. He is getting people that are not doing well, like the mental patent that Batman catches. The Joker gets people to follow him the same way abusive gangs IRL get followers. Certain political figures gain and followers the same way. 🤷♂

Good point. I just think it's funny how many henchmen in movies stay loyal to their bosses after watching them kill other henchmen; often for impulsive or narcissistic reasons.

The weird big brotheresque surveillance system feels very Propaganda to me. It doesn't need to exist in the movie. The only reason Nolan included it was to help justify American mass surveillance.

Batman continuity commonly has him taking the mantle because Bats scared him as a kid. Nolan also features this. If anything, I find his No Kill Rule to be harder to fully buy. Like he won’t kill The Joker (who will escape and kill more people) but Batman is totally fine crippling & giving small time perps traumatic brain injuries because they (check notes) were trying to boost a car. Batman is all about justice, but he’s a masked vigilante: he’s only accountable to himself.

First of all Christian Bale is a bad Batman. Also, Dark Knight is an utterly bad movie. The movie feels so stuffed that it doesn't breathe. Dark Knight Rises is way better though it was amateurish at places. Joker in Dark Knight is basically like BvS's Lex Luthor who plans everything happening in the movie with no probability of error whatsoever and nobody is bothered with it like they did to BvS is something baffling to me.

Ledger is not a good Joker. His passing granted him a status his character performance didn't earn. Yes, he was a captivating and meme-worthy character, but that person was not The Joker. He was some generic lunatic with penchant for clowning, but unlike the real Joker, Ledger's character had principals. A message. He wanted to make people change to his definition of good. The real Joker has no principals. He has no message. He barely has motivation or ambition, beyond making Batman's life more colorful. Ledger's Joker is my least favorite portrayal of the character, precisely because he is not The Joker, yet so many people praise him for being the best. They have no idea who The Joker is, which makes it infuriating to hear them wank him so hard. Glad Ledger is gone so I don't have to see him ruin a great character all over again.

A bit harsh but I take your meaning. Mark Hamill will always be my favorite Joker; especially his role in Arkham City. I appreciate Nolan's take on both Joker and Bane; but there is serious incongruity with those characters and the characters off of whom they're based.
