@J. Gess Yeah, they're literally reviewing all Batman movies as part of one project, but using this outrageous sliding scale (that isn't clear to anyone). Greg seems actively annoyed by this movie's slight inconsistencies but will ignore the part of Batman v Superman where Batman watches tape of Aquaman with the trident, but then we find out that Aquaman didn't have the trident yet later in the story.

I think rises is the best of the three films so this is not my criticism I just try to tell what other people seem to feel to understand their issues.....in the end i feel enjoyment or exploration of themes helps people during a movie even if depressing stuff occurs and from what I can gather this film is so sad and the tone is so intense for so long without much payoff people just get bored disinterested upset or angry watching it because its themes are too generic simple or not explored enough and sadly its fun action is limited(like the scene where batman fist appears is played as a negative afterwards by alfred so your only batman moment for a hug chunk of the film is bad according to the script that has characters say they want and need him back which makes people mad cause its jarring) and since dark knight rises does sorta built to this cliche no way out doomsday scenario and theres nothing more to talia besides the twist and bane besides the plan of ra's it just feels hollow on rewatch especially..they are not really trying to change gotham and we as an audience already know this early on as told by the film itself so a lot of the gotham scenes mean nothing to us on rewatch especially like in the end they just want to give hope and take it away..thats so boring and they want to break bruce's spirit?..why?..why not kill the one guy who can stop you?...when hes crippled?.....like the film chooses to be grand and have big new main characters but it really is a intimate bruce wayne story in the end not batman's...so it feels weird that this is the film where the worst situation occurs for batman and we have more main characters then before...and where are guards outside of the prison in case someone gets out?..why is bane in the prison just to appear in gotham again right after?..its jarring and it could of been done with a t.v. he did not have to go to the prison himself just to give a quick speech to bruce..thats so stupid..in 2012 just video chat on a laptop..save yourself all that time..cause its bizarre how he can just fly back an forth and left the city for a few days it seems...makes his next appearance at the football game even more weird...how did batman get back in the city?..its very bizarre how nolan just cuts that stuff out and edits the film like it should be longer and he said its not important even if he shot that extra stuff ...i feel people do not get as invested in these characters as I did over the past 2 films or the new ones or bruce's journey to not need batman... they cared more about the themes...oh well..they don't care about bruce enough

Batman Begins takes place in 2005, Dark Knight is roughly 2007 or 2008, and The Dark Knight Rises is 8 years after the last Batman sighting, back in 07/08 meaning somewhere around 2016 maybe 2017.

Imagine criticizing this movie for making leaps in logic or not making sense in terms of motivations, and then praising a movie like Batman vs Superman. Greg you're great man, but you need reevaluate your cinematic biases.
@michealcapdor9104
@michealcapdor9104 3 жыл бұрын
I think you're missing the point. BvS is a dumb superhero movie at heart, its a comic book movie and supposed to be basic and silly in its intentions. The Dark Knight movie are supposed to be cinematic masterpieces that happen to have Batman in them. In the trilogy the leaps in logic can't be excused because it doesn't suit the universe that has been established.
@infinitybelt
@infinitybelt 3 жыл бұрын
@@michealcapdor9104 False, Batman Vs Superman was intended to be gritty and serious. It was not positioned to be just a "dumb superhero movie", but rather a deconstruction of Batman and Superman as characters. This is incredibly obvious with how they pivoted the tone drastically with later movies because their gritty realistic take wasn't meshing with there comic book superhero 3rd acts that completely fall short of this tone. The Dark Knight Rises is no different then the other Nolan movies and demands the same of the viewer as every other Nolan movie. People just had incredibly unrealistic expectations of the 3rd film and when it didn't live up to there idealized version of a third film is this epic saga, they shit all over it for reasons that can be pointed out on literally every other Nolan movie. The difference here is that they liked those other films enough to overlook these same criticisms. They literally even say it in The Dark Knight in review.
@aarons.2323
@aarons.2323 3 жыл бұрын
@@infinitybelt The flaws are a bit more glaring in this one though because a) You don't have Heath Ledger, and b) It's not Batman Begins which as many might remember was the FOLLOW UP TO BATMAN & ROBIN. The history with these movies can hold a lot of weight to how they're perceived, and the problems with Batman Begins and especially The Dark Knight can be overlooked a little easier because of the times they were released in. That matters. The Dark Knight Rises had the baggage of being released after The Dark Knight which contained probably one of the best acting performances in a movie ever. It was never going to meet expectations because of that, for sure, but the problems with the plot and characterization seem to be a bit more prevalent, too. And so, it's easy to pick the movie apart and say it's a "bad movie" because of those problems. I don't think it is, and I like it quite a bit still. But I also liked Batman V Superman like Greg. This entire group pretty much said that X-Men Days of Future Past wasn't as good as most of the MCU , which is downright a laughable thing to say to me since I think it's better than at least half of them. They said that Spider-Man 2 isn't good and doesn't hold up (it does). It just goes to show that people have different tastes.

I think context matters here. I don’t know if it’s cinematic biases as much as holding the sequel to the dark knight to a higher standard. I don’t think the expectations were high at all for BvS where as TDKR had near insurmountable expectations.

i think people judge it harshly cause its not the dark knight ...the expected it to be less about bruce wayne and more about themes ...like people are sick of the whole bad guy blows up city for reasons shtick cause it just does not challenge us on a intellectual level so its hard to care as much on rewatch about most of the villain stuff ....like maybe if bane's plan really was to change gotham through this revolution we could care more instead of just having him lying and you know secretly going to blow them up no matter what they did or maybe if we did not know that he was planning to kill them anyways like we were never told of his lie so we think we can believe him but at the end it turns out he was lying it would better as a twist? I don't know....plus if they made talia more conflicted at the end due to her feelings for bruce it would work better since we would realize that sex scene and all that talks they had actually got through to her and mattered and like in the comics she loves him for real....instead bane's plan is just a facade and talia is just evil..with little motivation to be..smdh...and her love of and speeches with bruce are totally pointless ..smdh..these are fundamental flaws with the film ...it makes the villain's so boring..they just want to kill people..and yet wasted 5 months to do so?...why not kill them all with a gun over that 5 months daily?..whats the point of the bomb?..its not instant it has a timer...for 5 months...an the film makes us get invested in them only for them to be recycling the same motivations as the first film's villain...smdh..really?..lame

@razkable
@razkable 3 жыл бұрын
i think people harp too much on small nitpicky moments or plotholes in reviews ... or the less engaging storyline cause its themes are simpler compared to dark knight as it focused more on our investment and emotional personal connection to bruce wayne rather than this world...but thats the only flaws it has...no one praises the other stuff it does well or admit its a great film on its own..they just compare it to the past film an thats unfair...its a choice nolan made to ground the story with bruce like begins was...bruce in dark knight is almost non existent and as a trilogy thats a flaw honestly cause the other 2 films are about him....he is the same character for 98% of that 2nd film...and that is why we follow harvey and joker way more...an batman..thats a problem that film has not rises since thats what the trilogy is suppose to be about.

BANE Let me tell you the truth about Harvey Dent. In the words of Gotham’s Police Commissioner, James Gordon... BANE ’The truth about Harvey Dent is simple in only one regard - it has been hidden for too long. After his devastating injuries, Harvey’s mind has recovered no better than his mutilated face. He was a broken, dangerous man, not the crusader for justice that I, James Gordon, have portrayed him to be for the last eight years. Harvey’s rage was indiscriminate. Psychopathic. He held my family at gunpoint, then fell to his death in the struggle over my son’s life. The Batman did not murder Harvey Dent - he saved my boy. Then took the blame for Harvey’s appalling crimes, so that I could, to my shame, build a lie around this fallen idol.’ BANE (V.O.) ’I praised the madman who tried to murder my own child. BANE ’The things we did in Harvey’s name brought desperately needed security to our streets... But I can no longer live with my lie. It is time to trust the people of Gotham with the truth, and it is time for me to resign.

right?..and you can have more villains in the first film like riddler ivy harley maybe even bring back scarecrow more and (penguin maybe) as the catalyst for batman returning as they broke out of arkham prison together and he has to get back in the grove before bane shows up..maybe not kill off joe chill gamble or two face so they can break them out and give us the rogues gallery batman is famous for...minus joker of course...then have bane and talia have more set up same for catwoman and blake who maybe help batman catch these criminals in the first film so we care more about them in the next film and they are set up better so in the climax they don't feel shoehorned into this series last movie...and then when bane releases them again its bad really bad for the people...and then alfred can not disappear for so long cause that and the talia stuff can be more explored maybe make her regret her choice and love bruce so shes more nuanced and conflicted in the end?..ever think about that nolan?...why is she so cliche evil with no motivation?

So, Dark Knight Rises is such an intriguing movie. I think it's good, it's my favorite of the three, but it's not the best film of the three. I remember after The Dark Knight came out, and everybody loved it, and we were all sure there was going to be a sequel, but nobody had any idea what it would be like, and nobody envied Chris Nolan's position. We thought, callously, "Harvey Dent came back to life when Heath Ledger died." Ultimately, out of respect for Heath, Christopher Nolan decided to set the film 8 years in the future. There's a scene in the script where you see the back of the Joker's head while they're breaking everybody out of Blackgate, but the League of Shadows are all like... fuuuuuuuuuck that guy. He can stay right there. But the themes of the movie hit so damn close to home for me that it really holds a special place in my heart. It's a story about a man deciding that he wants to live. People are so used to movies ripping ideas from The Dark Knight Returns - Zack used the pictures, the Russo Brothers used the politics, and Christopher Nolan used the psychology. And Rises absolutely hits those notes. "I spent years looking for a good death. This... this will be a good life."
@razkable

rises is my favorite superhero film ever...people seem to not get that its trying to tell like 4 different stories..people wonder why is this and this in the film its cause of the comics.. nolan wanted to pay tribute and tell a bigger story and I appreciate him giving bruce a happy ending and showing a character grounded movie about bruce coming back and not needing batman no more so he can have that normal good life alfred and his parents always wanted for him....he found the right successor his batman died in the eyes of the people..they do not need him as batman anymore ..he can be free..like he wanted to be in the last film

I love this movie. Yeah it's the weakest, but it still stayed true to it's characters, and I still cry at the ending. I do think Nolan was a bit lazy in the writing in the last 30 minutes, but I don't mind. After Nick nitpicked Dark Knight to death, there actually some stuff in both of these movies that don't make sense. I loved Bane, most of his lines gave me chills, Anne Hathaway was really good as Catwoman (I still prefer Michelle). The fights, while better, are still underwhelming. I don't think Nolan can shoot good fights (I haven't seen Tenet yet), but I appreciate there aren't so many quick cuts like in Begins. The first fight with Bane was cool though, I felt the stakes there. Honestly I can understand why if some see it as a disappointment, but I seriously don't understand when they say Rises is "bad".

Blake just somehow KNOWING that Bruce Wayne was Batman as a kid, and Gordon knowing Bruce was Batman after Bruce describes how he comforted him as a kid after his parents died, even though he’s probably done that a million times for different kids who have lost relatives to crime... are just two examples of convenient shortcuts in this movie.

Unpopular opinion: this is my favorite Batman movie and I loved Bane he's terrifying and I love the growth that Bruce Wayne has it's not that he punches harder it's that he climbs out of his pit of despair rebuilds himself To Face someone he probably would have been able to defeat easily years ago and the point of causing chaos in Gotham was to torture Bruce before they destroyed it while he watched on TV

If I recall from the bts features, James Newton Howard left because he felt Nolan and Zimmer had a better working vibe/chemistry after working on Inception together, and felt he didn't want to get in the way or something like that.

I still love this movie. Sometimes I can't decide if I like Begins or Rises better, but Rises does do a good job at giving Bruce Wayne a logical conclusion. It just has the unfortunate position of having to follow up the Dark Knight. And i don't give a shit: I liked that JGL is revealed as this version of Robin. He's clearly a composite of the 3 Robin's from the comics at the time. And given the trilogy's goal to keep things as grounded as possible, giving Batman a child as his sidekick legitimately would've been a bad look. So why force it, like they did Chris O'Donnell playing a college student?

The movie is bad because it doesn't fully explore it's biggest theme, "The Noble Lie". Which was the biggest thing in the Dark Knight's ending!! First they tell us that, even though it's based on a lie, the Dent act actually cleaned the streets (by increasing the State's power of prosecution, like the Patriot Act). So, how does this peace based on a lie negatively affects Gotham? Well, it doesn't! There's no evidence that the product of this lie is corrupt at all! There is no negative consequences for the cops increased power of surveillance and excessive authority. In fact, the Dent act actually works wonderfully! BUT, once Bane reveals the truth about Dent (by reading some paper he says is written by Gordon, which everyone believes), somehow society crumbles. Which makes NO sense. The movie tries to present Bane as this product of escalation, that The Lie caused such social inequality in Gotham that his rise was unavoidable, but doesn't actually explain or show that happening; unlike the Joker , who was a madman the Mob naturally turned to when Batman made them desperate. Is the movie trying to say that bad stuff happens when the truth is revealed? It does seem to be the point since, once again, in the end Batman has to heroically keep the truth from the population: He has to hide his survival in order to create yet another Noble Lie, now the one that Batman sacrificed himself for Gotham, thus creating another image of justice for Gotham to revere. So after a whole movie dedicated to developing this theme of TRUTH, we end up exactly at the same point made at the end of Dark Knight. More lies.

I love that in the pit you have Bruce's whole arc up to that point and beyond. the 1st time he tries climbing up he thinks it's easy and is too arrogant like when he thinks he can take out Bane at the beginning. It also plays into what Alfred said about Bruce wanting to fail. The 2nd time he is just angry and thinks only about strength like when he fights Bane in the sewer. The third time he finally "gets" it. It's not about the physical stuff it's about finding yourself again using fear thus coming full circle from Batman Begins; Batman is being reborn. Everyone seem to talk about the physical stuff when talking about this film although it has nothing to do with that.

if u wanna compare this stinker to an MCU movie...it pars with... hell, naaahhh... even The Dark World's better than this embarrassment. Nolan set the bar so high with Batman Begins and The Dark Knight that for him to give us THIS...F it. i remember i got my expectations quite high...having loved the previous movies...i was so pissed by this movie's end that i wish Nolan would've waited another year to polish up his script more...or just made this into TWO movies instead. there were just so many dumb plot choices and scenes... and that first Batman-Bane fight was shot SO AMATEURISHLY...i was cursing while watching it. plus the armed GC cops charging towards the charging armed Bane's army was just so ridiculous (maybe it would've worked in an action flick by a lesser moviemaker)..especially after having THE WHOLE Gotham cops being sent AND trapped in the sewer...SO DUMB. Bruce's back being "fixed"...Talia's extra stoopid revenge plot. Catwoman (tho looking hot)...her look and her being in this story and setting just didn't work for me. i wish Nolan would just own his mistakes with this movie and decide to REDO a third dark knight movie...more in the level of BB & TDK.

looking back they should of made this a 2 part film with 2 hours per movie and maybe shove in some other villains like riddler penguin poison ivy harley an more for scarecrow to do and like maybe have two face nor dead it turns out...like then it really could of been special if like the first part was all about this rogue of arkham villains escaping so batman has to come back for that and then the 2nd film is about bane and talia catwoman and robin so then you can take care of the batman alfred stuff in its own film and then have the 2nd film have more time dedicated to the cast and the siege the theme of giving the power to the people and more time for the villains and bruce's full arc rather then just set up for an hour..the film could of been special if split up...

My only (and major) problem with this movie is that Bane, once again, is not the main villain. I wish they hadn’t forced the Ras Algul tie-in right at the end. All that stuff about the ONE person who ever escaped that prison, and the mystery behind this figure, thrown out the window once you realize it was never about Bane. That makes a second watching impossible for me to enjoy, bc Bane is now an absolute nobody in the entire movie. He’s not as dangerous or powerful or mysterious as you initially think, on the first watching. Side note: the re-recording of Bane’s voice ruined many scenes for me. Go back and watch the original intro scene, compared to the final version. Tom Hardy was phenomenal in the original, and almost cartoony in the re-recording. What a shame.
