@@MrHoneuma Just for the heck of it, I tried a vegan meat hamburger (I'm specifying this because I still had cheese and bacon on it so kinda defeats the point). And honestly, if I didn't know this was vegan meat, I wouldn't have noticed anything wrong at all. The taste was right, and the texture was just so slightly softer than regular hamburger meat. These vegan meats are honestly getting impressively close.

@@misot90 I remember hearing about this vegan couple who made like vegan recipe youtube videos or something and when they decided to have child the woman actually had to go off her vegan diet because thry found that their child wasn't getting the nutrients it needed. When they made a video about that (presumably to inform people that it's something they may have to deal with too if it comes up) but their viewers just shat all over them. Like how dare they abandon their vegan ways. I think for some people though it's more like a religion than just what they eat, and that leads into the whole robber barons vs moral busy-bodies comparison.

It's a struggle I know decently well. One of my best friends is vegan and food allergies dictate that I eat mostly vegan food, with the exception of fish. I can technically eat poultry, but becoming allergic to garlic and onions removed the only ways I liked it prepared, and honestly, the vegan chicken replacements taste better than real chicken most of the time. I'm yet to find any replacement that can rival real fish/seafood though. It's always uncomfortable being "that guy" when ordering food.

The thing is with Fauna that I love is I think in her debut is when she mention she was a vegan but made it a point to tell us Saplings that she isn't one of "those" sort of vegans, which honestly just makes me like Fauna even more. It really sucks tho that they were accidentally fed meat by a restaurant's mistake since that can on occasion cause vegans to get rather ill.

I don't think it was her debut, but it was a pretty early stream. From what I heard, vegans don't necessarily get _sick_ from eating meat. It's just that their gut bacteria isn't accustomed to a diet that includes meat. It probably wouldn't cause problems in Fauna's case, but if a vegan were to switch to a long-term meat-based diet, it might take some time for their gut bacteria to adjust. All it means is more undigested meat in their poop.

@@jarenwang656 Actually, it can legitimately make them very, very sick if they went without meat long enough. Servings of meat as small as dumplings or other snack sized food wouldn't be as likely, but a full on 16oz Ribeye for example, could quite easily, actually. I didn't know how serious it could be, until a coworker who was vegan for religious reasons since he was a child, tried a rack of pork ribs for the first time in his life and was hospitalized for a week. The longer they've went without meat, the more they have, the more dangerous it is (partially raw red was the most dangerous then, if I remember correctly). Our bodies weirdly phase out the ability to digest some foods if we never have them, like some people get deathly ill from raw vegetables, since they never eat them. Not even allergies, they just can't digest it at all, so it's almost like eating straight up mold.

Lol, so we went to japan, myself, and two friends one vegan. I warned him very early "Japan is very healthy with most of the general food, BUT, they generally don't care much about vegan/vegetarian rules. Food will have pork fat, eggs, fish, chicken, beef etc often just mixed in and cooked with the other food." I them proceeded to teach him the basic phrases to ask for food without meat, eggs, milk etc. So we unpacked at our hostel in Akihabara, went to the ramen place that serves "the biggest ramen" and went in, we asked for pork ramen, he asked for vegetarian ramen, we get out food and eat, and about halfway in he's like "man this is so delicious, but it feels fatty" and we compared dishes. His was literally exactly the same, for the same price, just missing the two huge pork steaks, but the same brother made with pork flanks and bones and cooked with the pork steaks lol. We noticed a piece of pork like, mid ramen. He just shrugged and the rest of the trip treated it like a write off, went to McDonald's, are chicken skewers etc, sometimes you get stuck in the position where you get stuck with it and you compromise or be very picky.

The reason carnivores in the wild don't need the veggies is that their pray eats it and they tend to then eat said pray, intestines and all. That are still full of said veggies that haven't completely passed through. So carnivores are technically eating veggies, just after other animals have chewed it up for them and digested them a bit for easier consumption. But again, if eating human meat, which is cleaned, organs removed and just eating the pure meat and fat itself, you need supplements if you don't eat your other food groups.

I had a vegan friend more or less have accidentally ate meat in several occasions, not her fault because sometimes food establishments slip up. And she was like "Well guess I just had to restart my diet" then just carry on eating her greens the next instance like nothing happened.

To be fair not everyone who is vegan/vegetarian is so by choice, meat can make some people ill so it really should be treat with the same seriousness as other allergies.

I mean, it's no different than being server a dish with nuts, being allergic to nuts, but not being informed that the dish has nuts in it. Suing is kinda dumb, I'd demand a compensation for incorrectly prepared order though.

I don't think vegans "most of the time" sue the restaurant at all. I notice a lot of these comments talking about "what vegans do" are from people who have no idea what vegans do lol. Restaurants add non-vegan shit (especially dairy) all the time. No one sues over it. If someone requests not to be served something and you "slip up" causing illness then that is 100% on you. It's not something to blame the person with allergies for being too sensitive. That said, I reject that some vegans "most of the time" sue restaurants. There are millions of vegans in the US. Restaurants being sued is incredibly rare. Non-vegans sue restaurants for stupid shit at a much higher rate I'd wager.

I always say that if you are vegan for moral reason - accidental meat is fine in grand scheme of things, if you make effort to avoid them. We don't even need to go full vegan as a society to cut back on cruelty to animals. Don't drop meat entirely if you can't get a balanced diet or simply don't want to. Just eat it less, and that would be enough to make a change!

You're right that accidental meat is not a big deal if you've taken effort to avoid it. But it would still be better to stop eating it once you know to support plant-based agriculture. But it's not a big deal either way. The occasional cheat meal doesn't outweigh the other 364 days of the year you weren't eating meat. I like the "Just eat less" messaging, and non-vegans find it much more convincing and palatable, but it's not exactly true. "Just eat less" is good advice, but from a moral position it is inferior to "eat none". It should be "eat as little as you reasonably can." For some people that will be 0, for others it could be different depending on a ton of factors.

I've cooked some "beyond meat" burgers on the stove. To be honest, I couldn't care less that they were made of chickpeas. Just took four minutes, and the taste and texture were something I want to repeat. Vegans have pretty convincing options nowadays.

I've had beyond meat burgers and impossible burgers, and they're pretty good. Tastes like a lower quality beef patty, like the frozen ones you get at the shops. Unfortunately they're priced like a premium beef patty still. If they can get the price down, I would be totally down to switch all my lower quality burgers. Obviously it doesn't compare to a nice restaurant burger, but if I'm going to McDonalds I'll have the veggie patty.

No kidding, I haven't taken the plunge yet but most of my family went vegan almost a decade ago so basically every family get together we have a full spread vegan banquet and it's some of the tastiest food I have ever eaten.
