A retrospect on the entirety of the DC Extended Universe with the hopes of finding out why it failed in the first place.

I have less than kind words on the DCEU. It was all just a poor fusion between Nolan's Batman and the MCU, but darker, edgier, misanthropic, and nihilistic yet convoluted. Most of its films are just among the worst films I've ever watched, with characters being depressive and unrelatable caricatures of themselves (especially Superman, who is meant to be the best of humanity), contrivances, financial losses for the most part, and a serious lack of focus, before and after Snyder. To this very day, despite my respect for Gunn's SUICIDE SQUAD, I still think the DCEU should've died for good after the disaster that was JOSSTICE LEAGUE, but only after BLACK ADAM failed was Warner too late to realize their mistakes. Oh, also, it was the worst fandom I've ever clashed with.

This is a very good way to put it. I didn't have that much of a problem with superman, but it was batman, one of my favorite superheros, that really made me mad. He was written like the punisher and given no batman qualities. He literally BEAT UP DEADSHOT IN AN ALLY IN FRONT OF HIS DAUGHTER a little hypocritical wouldn't you say? And I think that there were some good movie that came out of this. But that's it. Good movies. They stand by themselves but hardly connect to the actual universe. It was super lazy storytelling and incredibly sloppy.

Seriously though Suicide Squad made a profit and actually won an academy award sure it was for costume design but like Perry White said about the Pulitzer Prize in Superman Returns it doesn't really matter why they got the award it only matters that they got one but that's why it got a sequel/ soft reboot in the first place

The main problem was actually Nolan insisting on keeping things grounded and recommending Zack Snyder in the first place. As much as i love the Dark knight trilogy. They really need to find a way to balance the grounded side and the campy side. Not just choose one or the other. Have an actual plan that properly laid out the foundation. And definitely not do whatever the heck Snyder was trying to do.

@theanythingzone6090 Something else, is that not even Nolan understood why Snyder had Superman kill Zod in Man of Steel. I think having Superman do that instead of finding another way to stop Zod made him feel like less of a symbol of hope. Superheroes should hold themselves up to a higher standard and not kill. I've always loved that no kill rule, and Snyder's disrespect of that rule for both Superman and Batman, essentially meant that he got the 2 main pillars of DC wrong. Meaning they didn't have the foundation to build on.

One of the issues was that Man of Steel wasn’t supposed to be the start of a shared universe but the beginning of a Superman deconstruction trilogy in the same vain as Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy, but then Avengers was a huge success so WB highjacked Man of Steel to be the launching point of the DCEU despite not being written with that in mind and had Zack Snyder spearhead the project despite it not being what he originally had in mind. Now I think with the time and the correct oversight Snyder could’ve pulled it off, there were initially plans to do a Man of Steel sequel to address the more controversial aspect of the first film as well as transition Cavill’s Superman into a more traditional version of the character rather than the deconstruction that he stated as. There were also plans to do solo films for the other heroes before the team up movie, the idea was while Snyder worked on Man of Steel 2 and later Justice League other directors would work on the other heroes with oversight from Snyder. Now this could’ve worked but then WB didn’t want to wait and wanted to compete directly with Marvel as soon as possible which led to the DCEU as we know it. What’s even worse is that WB had so many opportunities to make a shared DC universe, back in the early 2000’s with Batman Begins and Superman Returns there were talks to do a crossover but instead they decided to go forward with a Justice League movie completely separate from those two movies recasting Batman and Superman but then The Dark Knight made a lot of money so not wanting to create confusion and jeopardise their new cash cow the Justice League movie was cancelled and plans for a Superman Returns sequel were abandoned, there was even a half hearted attempt to use the Green Lantern movie as a launching point but that movie didn’t do well so it didn’t go anywhere. WB had every opportunity to launch a cinematic universe but kept getting in their own way.

@@theanythingzone6090 problem with WB is that they were very reactionary with their projects, comic book films were still considered a risk in the early 2000’s and were loathed to invest much money into them until they saw other franchises have huge success but instead of learning from their formula and carefully crafting a universe they just rushed things to cash in on what their competition was doing. Really if they were clever WB could’ve had a fully fleshed out DC cinematic universe before Marvel, we could’ve gotten a Justice League movie before Avengers. Let’s hope with Gunn in charge of a proper DC Studios WB keep their interference to a minimum and that good story tellers make their movies.

With Man os Steel, it was as if Snyder was trying to destroy Christopher Reeve's legacy and the character of Suoerman. Not every character needs to be a brooding Batman. And B vs S and Justice League has Batman breaking the one cardnal rule, NO GUNS FOR BATMAN, which is a deal breaker for any fan.

I'm all for directors taking risks and steering away from the exact way a character is. This is why I thought MOS was enjoyable, like I said, it set the tone which I enjoyed. However when the FIRST SCENE of BVS is batman gunning people down and even snapping someone's neck. That's when you lose me because that is no longer Batman. That is the Punisher.

BvS actually made more than $100 million in profits and still made more than $800 million in in the box office despite underperforming and not to mention WW followed after which performed well at the box office. The first DCEU "flop" was the film that was so different from the Snyderverse in tone and alienated everyone including Whedon fans and yet Aquaman followed after. When the DCEU distanced itself from the Snyderverse or even attempted to emulate the MCU in tone,it was unable to even reach $400 million for 4 years.

22:15 Bazinga! In all honesty, I firmly believe that Shazam 2, Aquaman 2, and The Flash should've all been canceled alongside Batgirl. Also, wrangle the Black Adam movie away from Dwayne Johnson and include the deleted 'Family of Thrones' scene from 'Shazam!' to the beginning of 'Black Adam', and have Shazam meet Black Adam at the end of that movie. Oh, and make Black Adam an R-rated movie. Finally, fast-track a comic-accurate Flashpoint adaptation that would close out the DCEU, movies & TV shows adjacent to the DCEU (outside of a select few) and even the Arrowverse.

This is probably the best way to put it. Imo, just don't give Dwayne Johnson that much control. I mean, wasn't black Adam SUPPOSED to be the villain of Shazam 2 until the Rock changed it up. The flash was an awful slopfest of CGI and, like you said, should've just been axed atp or actually follow the Flashpoint story and close everything out instead of making everything even more confusing with questions that will stay unanswered because of the reboot. And YES, HAVE SHAZAM SHOW UP TO FIGHT BLACK ADAM. There is literally no need for an explanation, the chemistry would go insane. Bazinga 🔥🔥🔥

you forgot about a few important details and that was the people who where overseeing dceu after snyder's department and before james gunn job overseeing the dceu and that was geoff johns, jon walberg, walter hamada,toby emmerich, and ann sarnoff. it was basically too many chiefs in the kitchen scenario trying to abandon snyder's vision after justice league whedon cut and the flash film was suppose to be a reboot with a new dceu cast. but then discovery bought wb and black adam's release was the straw that broke the camel's and discovery's ceo basically said "f it! we are rebooting the dceu and james gun will be the one in charged".

It's doom from the start. I wanted to like MoS so much because it got so many thing right (Henry Cavill, music etc.) except the *whole story is sociopathic.* People say it's 'dark', but it isn't a matter of just tone. Game of Throne is "dark and gritty", but there is clear line of morality that you can root for. MoS has none of that... imagine Jonathan saying letting a bus of children die for the most ridiculous of reasons, Kal-el proclaiming the fate of Krypton to be 'over' even when he has no reason to do that, at all. There is no hero in that movie, I don't even have a problem with them deciding to go for a kill. But that kill have to be earned, Kal-el practically did everything to ensure that kill had to happen, it's so unearned. The Suicide Squad finally worked because James Gunn actually understood what a team like that is about. Wet works that aren't suppose to see the light of day, not some "insurance" against superman. The problem now is that people expect James Gunn to repair a very damaged brand... which is a very uncertain and uphill battle.

I liked MOS mainly because of the tonal shift. I love seeing filmmakers test the waters of the characters because, nowadays, so many movies follow the same structure so I liked that part about it. And about the kill. Some people said it doesn't make superman look like a symbol of hope. Which I think is a valid point. But to me it made superman human. His reaction right after was full of despair. I think that it shows that he's not just some murderous super alien but actually feels sympathy for another life form. That's just me though.

The only character I get not getting a movie before Justice League is Cyborg, because that happened in the New 52 comics back when DC introduced their modern continuity(even though that was semi-recent at the time so it seems more like an accidental excuse more than an actual reason and we all know the writers don’t read the comics or else these movies would be more accurate). But if we wanted to have Cyborg appear in a major role before JL, than maybe we could have Wally be the Flash instead of Barry and have a movie based off of The New Teen Titans before League(k1ll1n9 two birds with one stone with doing two Leaguers in one movie). Also, Black Adam should’ve just been retooled into a more Justice Society focused movie because it would actually make the DCEU feel like it’s sprawling with a major legacy rather than having the JSA be a side-note in the universe’s history. I do get him fighting Superman though. After all, there’s a great Direct-To-Video movie where Shazam! and Superman brawl against Black Adam. As for WW84, it ruined Maxwell Lord. In the JLI(Justice League International) comics, he was a chill rich guy who funded the League until he became gradually evil. In WW84 he’s just some rich guy who is there. And he could be completely written out of the story and replaced with any other character and it would be the same story. I really hate the Shazam! movies because instead of paying off the set-up of Mr Mind(the worm guy), they come up with some made up villains. Listen, I can deal with not using Mr Mind I guess, but not using any of Captain Marvel/Shazam!’s catalogue is another problem. They didn’t need to make up a whole new group for this one. Overall I’m not impressed by the idea for the new Batman DCU movie because it seems that it has the entire Bat-family set up. This isn’t good because we haven’t seen any previous Robin before, so to have a Damian Wayne Robin movie(so probably either based off of Morrison run or Scott Snyder)…, it feels kinda rushed.

Anyone that knows what Snyder said his feelings were towards the mainstream heroes of the DC universe from his time working on 300 and Watchmen knew that his vision for Superman, and the subsequent films for the DCEU, would fail and be a miserable take on these characters. So yeah, the DCEU was doomed from the start just in trusting Snyder as the visionary guide for the films.

I agree with everything you said. You didn't miss much with Aquaman 2 and Blue Beetle looked like more of the same. I was so hopeful for the DCEU but WW84 and The Snyder Cut broke me as a fan. Still, I'm not a James Gunn fan either and I think it's dangerous to have the architect of the universe also be the head of the studio AND the director of Superman! Where is the check on power to make sure the best choices are made for the character and not the director's ego? Seems like the most important lessons weren't learned but I pray I'm wrong and we get a thriving DC cinematic universe in my lifetime!

So here's my thought with this: The fight against Doomsday was badass and awesome and so was the part in black Adam with superman pulling up. That's it. It was cool. But it added nothing to the story they were trying to tell. WHY IS DOOMSDAY THE SECOND VILLAIN OF THE DCEU!!!??? and why is superman arriving instead of Shazam? So much of this universe was built off quick rushes of dopamine for the audience like "Oh my goossshh it's superman" superman shouldn't have died. That's like if iron man actually did die when he brought the rocket into space 😂

Man of Steel was a horrible starting point IMHO, and featured a fcuk ton of red flags. Yes, Cavill is hot and cuts a powerful figure as a depressed Superman Ken Doll. Yes, there was no shortage of thespian raw talent surrounding him. But all the acting talent in the world won't save a bad script. Terrio and Goyer have talent and have done stuff before and I understand the pressure from WB. But this was not a good script and Zack can't edit for story, only flair. Hence DOA

Instead of knee jerk- reacting those years, Warner should've taken a more careful approach and built that universe properly. Always felt they should've used the Marvel template and made individual films of the JL founders first before JL, back-to-back. And this may sound wacky, but I also felt the movie side also should've worked alongside the CW side to make one cohesive universe. Would've possibly reduced the movie side's rushing problems in world-building and possibly reduced the CW's soap opera storyline antics and budget problems. Ironic that this is pretty much what Gunn is trying to do now with his universe.

James Wan the Director of Aquaman even said in interviews he met with Snyder during production. Aquaman 1 is considered part of the Snyderverse, and James Wan even made sure the the story takes place directly after Snyder’s JL….at the end of ZSJL Arthur says “I need to go see my dad” and he returns home to see his dad in in the beginning of Aquaman. Other problem with the dceu in my opinion where that so many DC heros where ether wasted or didn't make a single appearance like some examples Robin who was just ki#$ed off screen in BVS and it wasn't jason Todd Robin but dick Grayson Robin who got k#$led by the joker off screen in BVS ( that didn't make nightwing or teen titans fans angry including myself ) martian manhunter who as cool he was in Snyder cut he was mostly just a cameo who was supposed to play a role in JL part 2 but that never happened so he was set up for nothing Cassandra Cain from bird of prey and Harley Quinn they took one of the coolest female fighters in DC comics and turn her into a gender swap version of young jason Todd and it only name only it not even the same character or any resembles to her comic counterpart Green lantern was just a pointless easter egg in JL who got ki$%ed off and that it nothing for anything from the green lantern mythos at all Justice society was nothing but there that it also why was there no justice society or dr fate movie that would way better then then the rocks ego trip movie and that 5 examples I can think off and for other heros like green arrow zatanna the atom ( not atom smasher ) plastic man firestorm captain atom red tornado and others they don't exist which was probably a good thing given how the dceu would probably do some terrible characterization judging by it track record

It failed due to studio incompetence. They panicked after BvS when they should have stayed the course. When they shifted to BOP and the later films, that was the downfall. The first 6 DCEU films made $4.9 billion. The first 6 MCU films made $3.8 billion. No one considers the MCU a failure. Then Discovery took over and had it fixed with their new direction. But then THEY panicked and went with the reboot (and screwed Henry Cavill) and that was a disaster. WBD stock tanked that day and hasn't recovered. Gunns DCU has a lot more controversy and backlash than hype. The DCU is DOA, but the DCEU didn't have to fail. The studio snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. Twice.

I think people liked the MCU because of how they introduced its characters, money aside. And looked what happened, Endgame became the second highest grossing film because everyone wanted to see how it ended. Marvel successfully sold the audience on its characters and created a beautiful end to the MCU (until everything after happened)

You said Shazam was the best film of the series🤭 that shows the type of films you like and is why you could care less for the others. David foyer, Chris terreo write with major thematic/philosophical questions. They make you look inward with the characters being your anchor to the questions and seeing the decisions they've made to ask if it's the right one. Shazam was straight by the numbers committee film.
