some insight from south east asia here: we have a similar service, Grab, which not only does food delivery but tons of other stuff. food delivery wise, it's usually a one-order basis, so they go to pick up your order and deliver only that order before they can pick up another one. we can tip either as it's delivering or after delivery, and most importantly, we get a lot of coupons and vouchers that end up making the delivery fee 0 or even have the total amount (plus delivery) lower than the actual total, but the drivers all have a fixed rate per order so it doesn't hurt the amount the drivers earn. we can pay for express delivery (rate varies with traffic and weather) or, if we don't mind waiting, we get a way cheaper deliver fee if we choose a saver option. there's a countdown estimate in the app, and if the delivery goes beyond the estimated time (minimum 10 minutes over), we get a compensation voucher. I'm kind of shocked at how delivery apps are across the pond because I'm so used to grab's services

A big part of the issue is that a lot of the time, the food has to wait a long time for a driver to come pick it up, so it's cold before it even starts heading you way. There's no viable solution for that, since you have to put up the delivery as soon as you get it (if you even have a say in the matter) so the customer doesn't wait too long, but that also means you need to make it NOW so the driver who's barely turning a profit doesn't need to wait for the food. I used to work at a restaurant that used one of the very early food delivery services (~15 years ago) and those orders were always my least favorite, because someone, if not everyone, involved will be mad at you at some point.

My supermarket also offers frozen meals that are things like steamed fish and vegetables and rice. It's genuinely wholesome food. Plus, many restaurants offer food that are high in salt and fat, because that's what makes it a popular restaurant item. When things are consistently bad, always blame the company. They have a level of control. If they paid the drivers $80 an hour, and told them to make sure the order is perfect, and arrives quickly, they'd do so. $80 an hour is unrealistic, but as a company it's up to them to find what is satisfactory in order to provide good service. At the moment, they pay nothing, and have no control, so they take no responsibility.. They are useless.

There’s no real vetting or anything that you get as a driver, so I assume those charges go straight to the app/business. And, I have made plenty of mistakes, mostly because they don’t set you up with anything, and you have to figure it out yourself. But managing peoples food is a lot harder than it seems. That stress wasn’t worth the little pay. There’s lots of people who do it illegally (uninsured), as well. Someone who Dashed illegally hit my car, and he had to pay for it. Also an important thing to note: apps like Doordash would only need to add a teeny tiny fee to keep up with new regulations; they added these massive fees to try to get the laws repealed. You see similar things when there's a gas/carbon tax: the actual base price stays the same, but they jack up the price for consumers to trick consumers into hating the gov regulations. Having driven for DoorDash, it’s an all over loss for everyone. So like, let’s say you order a normal meal, with a drink - it comes to let’s say 12$, and you tip 25% so a 3$ tip on top of it. Then you add the 7$ small order delivery fee, then you add the 7$ DELIVERY fee, now your 12$ order is 29$ - and what’s even funnier is, let’s say the restaurant is 4-5 miles away. That order, to a DoorDasher would be considered a loss. Now your 29$ 12$ meal will sit and become cold. Now you have an illegal immigrant who takes all orders get your food - now you’re at the gamble of - are they gonna tamper the food? Are they gonna steal the food? Are they gonna intentionally misread instructions? Ok now from the drivers side. We get 2$ base no matter what distance the order is, so let’s say the same person ordered from a 5 mile distance restaurant in the middle of no where, so the store is around 6-8 miles away from you, the number you see is 5$ for 6-8 miles, mathematically that order makes no sense to deliver, as for at minimal 1$ per mile is considered breaking even or barely profiting

You're probably still paying an inflated price. You should consider looking up where you want to order from on an app (if Google doesn't do the trick for you), then going to the restaurants website for a menu (which is also likely larger than the one on the delivery app) and then ordering online if they do online orders or (I know, I know, I desperately don't want to either, but it gets a bit easier the more often you do it) call the restaurant to place your order.

@@Narangarath That's true, the owner of one place I ordered from even gave me his card and told me himself to just call instead of ordering online, next time. lol It seems they don't like taking orders from these delivery apps very much, either. To be honest, the reason I use them is out of convenience, like Ed mentioned. Also because I like that it allows me to remain more anonymous when ordering. Maybe it's weird and doesn't make much sense, but I end up thinking that if I avoid ordering on-site I have less of a chance of getting my order messed up, getting bad service, etc. It seems almost every time I order on-site I get completely ignored and have to go out of my way to get my order taken or finished.
