Pope Benedict IX, born Theophylactus of Tusculum, was a controversial figure who held the papal office during three separate periods in the 11th century. His impact left a dark mark on the papacy and the Catholic Church due to his his tumultuous reign that was full of sin and depravity. Ferdinand Gregorovius was a German historian who specialized in the medieval history of Rome and he wrote that during Benedict's time in holy office, "It seems as if a demon from hell, in the disguise of a priest, occupied the chair of Peter."
