Unheard of!? *Alexander the Great* was the most successful military strategist *and* warrior of all time. He fought with small armies and destroyed the largest and most powerful empire of ancient history, the Persian empire, in just 10 yrs. Skanderbeg was successful too but only in one geographic region, the Caucuses, where Alexander was successful throughout the Mediterranean, mid East and parts of Asia and India. 3.5% of the world's landmass was ruled by Alexander and the Macedonians.

Beatiful story put together, as an Albanian however 2 things we have learned different in our history: 1. Skanderbeg didn't kill any other Albanian who didn't convert to Christians but he was actually the only one who united all the Albanian regards to their religious. 2. He was not betrayed after the lost of the Berat fight, he actually lost the fight because his own nephew betrayed him to the Ottomans by promising him good and high titles after they would kill Skanderbeg wixh thanks God didn't happened. All Europe should be proud of him.
@A358M Жыл бұрын
Glad you caught that. Documentary is beautifully edited but their history of Skenderbeg is not exactly correct. Skanderbeg's goal was to fight for Albania's independence from the Ottoman Emprire. He never forced anyone to convert. After Skenderbeg,There were many heroic Albanian warriors who continued to fight their independence from the Ottomans. I say with the greatest of pride, we are the only nation on the planet that's never been motivated or devided by religions-ñeeiod Full stop. Religion is in YOUR heart Albanian is OUR unified PRIDE.

Mehmet II did not fight Skanderberg during his reign though, only his pashas such as Ballaban did and were defeated by Skanderberg. During The Albanian campaign, The Sultan was occupied with the States' affairs and external conflicts against Vlad/Wallachia, Venice and the Kharamides Turcomen in Eastern Anatolia. Mehmet II only came twice in Albania when Skanderberg was alive: The first was with his father, Murad II, in his youth and Mehmet didn't manage anything, he was simply a spectator, and the second time he scavenged the territory but couldn't find Skanderberg (some say he took refugee in Venice, some others say he was inside Kruje) and decided to build two forts around Albuena and left it to his pashas before going back to Constantinople.

@@Optimusturk The fact that sultan mehmet sent for 20 + years almost each year armies to subdue Skanderbeg and still couldn't achieve it during Skanderbeg's lifetime, shows a lot about Skanderbeg. The participation of Mehmed in two sieges of Kruje, even if he showed briefly and may had let the siege mostly in the hands of his generals(the sultan may have given them instructions however) , did increase the morale of the ottoman troops and tells us about the some serious involvment in conquering Albania.He could had invaded Italy only after conquering Albania.

This is a good video. One correction needs to be made. The goat on Skanderbeg's helmet has nothing to do with apparently the goat trick. In reality the goat on his helmet is the same goat Alexander the Great war on his helmet, like Pyrrhus and Achilles before him. All three of them (Pyrrhus, Alexander the Great and Skanderbeg believed were related by blood to Achilles. Alexander the Great's mother Olympia who was an Illyrian from the Molossian tribe believed to be a direct descendant of Achilles, which makes Achilles an Illyrian. Anyway that's a topic for another day. So in conclusion the goat on Skanderbeg's helmet is more than just a goat trick on the battle field. He wore it to show he is a descendant of Alexander the Great and Pyrrhus of Epirus, another Illyrian.

Skanderbeg and Hunyadi of Hungary were the same age, born in 1405 and grew up together in Ottoman camps. As for Vlad, he was born 1431 much later and haven’t heard about contributing towards each other, but I’m sure Skanderbeg was probably very much appreciating his skills as a great warrior. As a politician Vlad was terrible, fighting everybody and not being able to unify principalities within his homeland. At least all these warriors, they showed loyalty for trying to defend their homelands.

I'm Albanian, I've seen your documentary, but I have to say I don't agree with the way you described my hero and my KING Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeu. From your description comes a wrong and incomplete image that is, the complete opposite of what his contemporaries said. Scanderbeg was a VERY educated person he spoke many languages (more than 10) he had enormous culture also in terms of esoteric / gnostic demonstrated by the use of symbols in his helmet: the goat, the use of the star with 6 points (blue and yellow color) in the totally red flag (imperial color) with the black double-headed eagle (i.e. black PHOENIX rising from its ashes: solve et coagula. ) He was in the order of the DRAGON together with many important exponents of his time and was also a TEMPLAR. In the correspondence between Scanderbeg and the Prince of Taranto, extracted from "The Turks and the history of Scanderbeg" by the fifteenth century writer, Pagnel: "... you have offended my people by calling them 'Albanian sheep' and according to your tradition think of us in offensive terms. You have demonstrated that you have no knowledge of my race. My ancestors were Epiriotes, where Pyrrhus came from, whose strength could hardly be borne by the Romans. This Pyrrhus, who Taranto and many other towns in Italy supported with the army. I don't need to talk about Epiriotes. They are much stronger men than your Tarantini, a kind of wet men born only to fish. If you want to say that Albania is a part of Macedonia, I can concede that many of our ancestors were nobles who went as far as India, under the command of Alexander the Great, defeating those peoples. It is from these men that what you call 'sheep' descend. But the nature of things hasn't changed. Why are your men fleeing from these 'sheep'?” Not to mention the helmet which bears the Pelasgian symbol of the goat Amalthea (which according to the myth had fed Zeus with its milk as a child), and the engraving * IN * PE * RA * TO * RE BT * (Jhezus Nazarenus * Principi Emathie * Regi Albaniae * Terrori Osmanorum * Regi Epirotarum * Benedictat Te) which translates 'Jezus of Nazareth blesses the Prince of Emathia, King of Albania, Terror of the Ottomans, King of Epirus'. It is important to understand that in the Middle Ages the 'Macedonian' and 'Epiriot' ethnicity was synonymous with 'Albanian' according to scholars. In his speech to the documentary, Prof. Jahja Drancolli highlights the fact that Scanderbeg was taken hostage already in adulthood when his personality and identity was well formed, underlining that in reality it was his military-strategic capabilities that were copied by the military system of the Ottoman Empire and not the other way around. This aspect emerges from the beginning of the documentary by Prof. David Nicolle, who argues that the Ottomans copied many things from the countries they occupied including clothing, traditions, culture, and even military fighting strategies. That is why the most powerful political-military machine in the world of that time was not capable of subduing the Albanians neither with force, nor with the quantity of soldiers sent, nor with military tactics, nor with technology or with money. Not only that, but during those 25 years of armed resistance, the Ottoman Empire was defeated in a decisive and continuous way, demonstrating that the intellectual, political, military, and above all the moral and civil qualities of the Albanians were in every respect superior to the standard Empire preparation. The Albanian society of the fifteenth century already possessed the main quality that a community should have to build a nation and a state: the awareness of who they were, the knowledge of their ancient Illyrian-Pelasgian roots and consequently the connection with their past. All of this was the result of a long process that began before the creation of the Principality of Arbëri in the 13th century. In this context, Scanderbeg's intentions were not only to create an Albanian state on the periphery of the Ottoman Empire, but to destroy the empire itself, to then form the Kingdom of Albania in the western Balkans, reviving the glorious times of Pyrrhus, King of Epirus, and of Justinian, Emperor of Byzantium, of whom he was a descendant in all respects. Scanderbeg created the first Albanian National League in 1444 in Lezha, with the aim of uniting all the Albanian territories in a single national state based on the ethno-linguistic heritage that united them, unlike the other Balkan countries which in the centuries ago for the creation of their states were based on religion. As Prof. Kristo Frasheri rightly specifies, the pillar in which all the Albanian resistance is placed was the indisputable fact that the Albanians were aware of being an already well-formed nation, long before the arrival of the Ottomans in the Balkans. Otherwise we would never have been able to face the Ottoman invasion and to resist assimilation for a long time.

I have seen the huge skanderbeg statue in a square named after him in the Albanian capital Tirana. Strangely it is very close to a famous mosque there which was built by an ottoman general and his Descendants who were part of the ottoman power skanderbeg stood against. Many correspondences that he had with many of the other leaders in the 25 years he reined as the lord of Principality of Arbanon, with princes, popes and even the 2 Sultans as well, shows how eloquent and wit he was in his way of words.

In terms of military Ottomans at that time were the most organised and armed in the world, compared only to nowadays US, they had canons, a lot of infantry and horses. A true superpower of that time. Resisting them for 25 years is a great feat however the greatest thing is his legacy, it continous to move Albanians forward even 550 years after his death. He is considered a hero in Albania, while there is no actual legit evidence to suggest that the man himself was an in fact "Albanian" with an ethnic sense: "Skanderbeg's mother Vojsava was a Serbian noblewoman from the influential Brankovic family and sister to Mara Branković." "The name of the Kastrioti tribe is probably derived from the Greek word "kastron" (fortress)" "There are two different Skanderbegs today: the historic Skanderbeg, and a mythic national hero as presented in Albanian schools and nationalist intellectuals in Tirana and Pristina" Schmitt Jens Oliver (2009), Skanderbeg: Der neue Alexander auf dem Balkan, pp. 44, 45 "Skanderbeg's true status as a 'hero of the Albanian nation' is HARD TO PIN DOWN, due to the lack of primary sources. He has been CONSTRUCTED as a national figure by both non-communist Christian Albanians and by the atheist communists alike." @vandare6913 His contemporaries and early biographers all considered him an Albanian. According to Marin Barleti (fl. 1508), his main biographer, he was an Albanian fighting for Albanian freedom alongside his fellow Albanians. Here’s a few archival sources: 1. A report of the envoy of the Duke of Milan from 1454 calls Skanderbeg "an Albanian Christian" ("quello Sanderbech...è christiano Albanexe"). 2. The Italian humanist and poet Antonio Bonfini Asculano (1427-1502) calls Skanderbeg an "Albanian prince" ("Sandorbegum Albanensem Principem"). 3. Even the Venetians never questioned his Albanian origins. In 1464, a Venetian senator angrily said of Skanderbeg, that "we do not trust him at all, because he is Albanian, treacherous and dangerous" ("nuy non si fidamo di luy per niente, perche è Albanese et è traditore et tristo!"). 4. In 1464, the Duke of Milan, Francesco Sforza, wrote a letter to Skanderbeg, addressing him with these words: "The excellent and powerful lord, like our dear brother, the Albanian lord Gjergj Kastrioti, called Skanderbeg" . ("Illustri et potenti Domino tanquam fratri nostro carissimo Domino Georgio Castriot aliter Scanderbeg albanesi"). 5. In a letter from Giovanni Antonio, the prince of Taranto, on October 31, 1460, at the beginning of the letter he addresses Skanderbeg with these words: "Giovanni Antonio, prince of Taranto, sends greetings to George the Albanian!" ("Ioannes Antonius princeps Tarenti Georgio Albano salutem!"). He goes on to say: "Italian blood is not afraid of the Albanian face!" (nec faciam Albanam timebit Italicus sanguis!") and other such insults to the Albanians.

delicious cult Narrated `Ikrima: `Ali burnt some people and this news reached Ibn `Abbas, who said, "Had I been in his place I would not have burnt them, as the Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'Don't punish (anybody) with Allah's Punishment.' No doubt, I would have killed them, for the Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'If somebody (a Muslim) discards his religion, kill him.' " Reference : Sahih al-Bukhari 3017 In-book reference : Book 56, Hadith 226
