A bit of a hyperbolic analogy here, but a serious ethical/philosophical point to explore: A man acquires a gun, and one day, in the heat of the moment, uses that gun to shoot someone in the head. He expresses remorse for his actions, stating that he never wanted to kill anyone, never meant for any of this to happen - that he's not that kind of guy, and he doesn't know how he got to that place. Would that man have been 'the kind of man that shoots someone in the head' if he had never acquired the gun? Would he have legitimately 'not been that guy', or, in fact, would he have been exactly that guy, only without the means to actually do it at that time? We know that there are plenty of things in a person that are latent. Addiction, for example - it is often said that an alcoholic is never not an alcoholic, even when they're sober. You're never *not* the kind of person you are, even when you lack the means to do the things that would imply. Most of us would prefer, I think, to believe, that we have an accurate self-image, that we understand the kind of person we are and what we would be inclined to do. Perhaps he really believed that, prior to the events of the scams, he was not the kind of person who would scam people; self-image is not something easy to change, and the brain is resistant to changing its own perspective on its own identity, especially when the newly implied identity is negative. "I am not a scammer, this isn't who I am" the brain thinks, and it will look for any possible excuse, no matter how implausible, to deny accepting that either they have changed, to avoid having to face the possibility that they'd been wrong about themselves for so long, or possibly even willfully deceiving themselves about such things. The brain will blame anything, and anyone else, and can become adamant, angry, and unpredictable when cornered. We'll probably never know for sure if they money changed him, or if it was a situation of a man suddenly gaining the ability to do something that, consciously or not, he already had the inclination to do. Perhaps, like many things, it is a little bit of both - a vulnerability of mind and character, worsened by opportunity and circumstance. None of this is to excuse the behaviour at all, and nor would I excuse it. But it is a strange feeling to wonder what kind of things might be lurking in our own minds to come forward under the wrong sort of opportunity, and how we might better prepare ourselves to be aware of, and handle such things.

I'd like to throw out a little, inconsequential side story that happened about 10 years ago where Phantom was the catalyst. Phantom on one of his League streams, which I enjoyed watching back in the day, said he was looking for more people to volunteer (they were upfront that it was unpaid) with a Minecraft side project that was currently in the works. It was going to be a server for his fans/subscribers to explore, and you could find things like League codes for skins or whatever within notes in hidden chests. The team needed more builders, and I submitted essentially a Minecraft resume (I annoy my friends with this story every time I can). I got in and started volunteering under one of the more senior people. This map was HUGE. There were whole statues of League characters, secret areas everywhere, places from other games - you name it. My grand additions were a massive cathedral and the start of a "1 to 1" copy of the Water Temple from Ocarina of Time. Also, a particularly sinister one-way trap where skeleton heads would mock you (via the wooden signs) for falling in, and you had to suffocate yourself via a trapped chest + piston to get out. That was vetoed lol. I wasn't present, but when Phantom saw my dark cathedral in the swamp area when he came to check on progress, he loved it - at least that's what the others told me. It was a nice feeling. He even gave us some cash for our work. Nothing earth-shattering I think (I turned it down before they even told me an amount), but it was still a lovely gesture. But what I mostly remember was the community of builders. Great, level-headed people who just built things and kept the project going. Phantom, as far as I knew, left creative control almost entirely to us. it was pretty fun hanging out with the rest of the team in Skype, using WorldEdit to make gargantuan things. Unfortunately, the project sputtered and died out as I think Phantom's focus went elsewhere. Someone kept a copy of the map before the server shut down. I only remember one name from the team after this decade of time - iW00T. I hope you figured out how to script a copy of the player character to attack in that one Water Temple room. It's probably trivial to do nowadays, but it felt like you were really pushing the scripting boundaries then - at least to ignorant me. To the rest of the team - I hope you're all doing well.

Btw csgo skins took 3/4 years before taking BIG values. doppler m9s for example were only 300/400. 9:50 TheOriginalWeed/JoshOG part CSGOLotto owner that slipped through the cracks. How is Phantomlord not in prison btw he scammed Millions lmao.

The worst part about the unregulated gambling stuff Valve created isn't that people lost money when gambling, it's that so many kids were set on a path to a life of gambling.

Hello KiraTV, would you by any chance be willing to talk about MapleStory again? Recently a class was announced that it will be removed, and it's sent a good chunk of the playerbase in an uproar for multiple reasons, including how it sets a bad precedent for other class removals and Nexon's lack of communication on the matter.

He will probably be broke in a few years if he isn't already. People like this who rise to 'fame' and into more money than they ever would've dreamed of, usually are not the best at managing money. Considering his gambling and propensity to spend his money on depreciating assets, I can't imagine he will have much of anything by the time he is 45.

The root cause of half of this is the stupid of paying lots of money for skins. The second order stupid is watching someone pretend to freak out for winning skins that are valuable because of the first stupid. The third stupid is getting addicted to gambling for money based on the first two, as though easy money is good money. The final stupid is thinking that his followers were sheep and only he had agency, when everyone involved had agency and should've chosen better.

It boggles my mind that actual legal action wasn't taken against him considering what he did was highly illegal and he made off with millions of dollars of people's money by rigging his own gambling website. He should have lost all of his money and also had a long prison sentence.
@casanovafunkenstein5090 Жыл бұрын
It was a technicality that let him get away with it. Because the wagers were made exclusively with in-game items that had no value or utility outside of the CSGO community there was technically no money involved in the transactions and gambling regulations were not worded in a way that accounted for people playing games of chance with them. The fact that the items would then be sold for real money outside of the gambling site created just enough of a distance between the games of chance and the profits from the scam that the regulators couldn't come after him. It's like how in Japan you'll often see pachinko places across the street from pawn shops: the players use the balls they win on the games to exchange for prizes of no real monetary value and then cross the road and get the money from the guy across the road who buys them for way more than they're worth before handing them back to the guys at the pachinko business. The website he ran took no money: it was selling the items after the fact that made it profitable. This meant that they could rig the whole thing without having any monetary transactions on their books (besides their operational costs) and therefore there wasn't any way to prosecute him for taking people's cash because nobody actually spent money to participate and the sales were made on a market place that wasn't under his control, rendering those transactions no more illegal than anything else being sold between CSGO players on the other platform. I believe that the issue was twofold: the laws regulating gambling made exceptions for things like trading cards, which would be the closest existing comparison to the type of goods being wagered, and the gaming industry was already taking advantage of players in similar ways through similar games of random chance within their online games and lobbied heavily to retain the ability to exploit their audience through gambling mechanics designed to induce compulsive spending. I believe that the regulations were subsequently tightened up in some parts of Europe to outlaw these systems and treat them as a form of gambling, however the best that regulation of online gambling can achieve is preventing people without a VPN from accessing them within their borders. On the internet there's nothing to stop someone registering a business like this in a country without regulations and blocking off incoming traffic from places where it is illegal (all the while knowing that people in those countries are participating too, except three VPN makes it appear that their IP addresses are from countries where it's not illegal.)

I remember watching him as a child in 2012 - 2014 before he went to shit together with league of legends itself. His taste of music introduced me to the metal genre which I love to this day and to one of my first and favorite metal bands "KoRn" when I once heard one of their songs on PhantomL0rd's stream which the title of is "Blame". After hearing that song I just fell in love with the sound and was desperate to find out the title which was not so easy back then for me since I barely knew english at all. After finally figuring out the title and listening to it in a good quality I begun to progressively listen to more and more metal songs and eventually before I've even noticed I was hooked on metal for life and I still am just as strong even 10 years later. The video from that stream is even still on KZbin I believe. The video was titled "steak lord" or something in which he was playing aram and trying to order a steak online for himself while listening to the song in question. At least for that bit I'll always be grateful to him. Too bad he had to end up being such a sad person and ruin his career but oh well at least I've gained something positive from watching him back then together with good, lasting memories.

Just to Name a few :D Man so many Bands I know and Love cause of him. I'll treasure these my whole life. I was part of his following 10 years ago. And it was crazy shit. But one thing remained in my mind ever since Richard Lewis (at the time one of the biggest voices in e-sports, today someone that most of the industry doesn't want and that blocks you on twitter just because even if you don't interact with him) did that "investigation" and it was everyone was blaming PL and also KZbinrs like TMartin, which is totally understandable, but I always thought the same thing: How is it that Valve just escaped this unscathed. It will always be mind boggling to me that no one ever even mentioned Valve as the first culprit of this whole mess, creating a system where this could happen. Funnily enough, years and years later people and sometimes in EU legislation coming out against "Lootboxes", and yet CSGO and Valve, still no mention. According to Valve, if I recall correctly, they stated that skins "did not change in any shape, way or form the gameplay, and also they were just virtual items, thus not holding ANY REAL MONETARY VALUE". In addition, they stated that it was supposed to be "something for people to play like they were part of a black market of weapons" making a reference to the Steam market. I couldn't believe it, since to open a box, you needed 2.49 dollars per key of real money that you would put in into Steam. On one side, I am glad, it's the reason why we still had (had because cs2 is coming) csgo be alive today. But it was just fuckery. This video was great, it was a nice recap.
