More proof that Dick Van Dyke is so talented. Singing, dancing, and clowning around. He really seems to like being around kids, as in the 'Father of the Week' episode, in front of Richie's class. He has such a gentle way about him. Too bad that this episode didn't feature a duet with Rob and Laura singing and dancing together, with Laura in clown makeup as well. They were so good together.

BTW: This episode was the first one filmed after JFK's assassination shortly after November 22, 1963. There was no live studio audience and featured a scene where Laura compared her family to the Kennedy family, which had to be re-dubbed later. The cast decided to go ahead and film the episode despite the tragic news and it aired in Mid December, 1963

When Sally said that she had to skip her 8th birthday because her family was poor, it brought to mind that I had never had a birthday party or gift until long after I had left home; I was in my 20s before my wife gave me my first-ever birthday party. To be honest, I felt like a damn fool, 🙄 I mean, a grown man receiving gifts, having people sing to him, etc., and for what; I didn't do anything special. - If anyone should receive gifts on a child's birthday, it's their mother! After all, she went through 9 months of misery, topped off with hours of agony just to give birth to the oblivious child! 😜 Seriously, though, why even bother with birthday parties? What do you folks that have had birthday parties and gifts all of your lives believe; are they a waste of time?

Exactly, he should have been told there would be no inviting anyone without permission, from the start. Both parents should have instilled this in him, re budget and what would be allowed. Richie should have been made to apologise and "uninvite" anyone his parents did not know about to learn a lesson about event management.

I think even back then, $100 for a kids party for 63 kids at Disneyland with all the fun stuff they have them do is a pretty good price. I think minimum wage back then was around $1. So like today's wage around $10hr and so it would be $20 per kid today. So If I'm calculating it right, with the buying power of $100 in 1960's it's like going to Disneyland today and only spending $1,200 today for a kids party. So yeah that's not a bad price at all.

I have got to admit I was disappointed with this episode for its lack of believability or creativity in a script concerning a birthday party. Did anyone else notice that even though balloons were mentioned for the birthday party, no balloons are seen at the actual party? No ice cream or cake is seen; the kitchen does not even have ANY snacks for a party anywhere to be seen! Laura mentions being hungry AFTER the party. Who has a party and does not provide FOOD for the guests?? No cookies, no peanuts, no potato chips for the kids?? No hot dogs nor hamburgers? Where is a pinata game or pin the tail on the donkey or ANY games planned for the children? Where are the party hats or anything pertaining to a BIRTHDAY PARTY?? Where are the balloon animals or anything to make it look like they cared to plan for their child's birthday??? And where are the PRESENTS? EVERY BIRTHDAY HAS STACKED PRESENTS SOMEWHERE! Where are the posters or decorations for a birthday? They do whole days of planning for the business but apparently have no time to plan a simple party for their son. Rob Petrie supposedly knows juggling and magic tricks, but we did not see that in this episode for his son's birthday. The clown act was a last-minute attempt to stave off total failure of the party but was not his best clown act and a dismal clown costume. This episode was a failure to me for its lack of imagination and creativity for this birthday script!

@garyfrancis6193 Жыл бұрын
I agree. It’s quite common to be afraid of clowns. I have never thought they were funny. To me they’re creepy. My brother was terrified of them as a kid. I don’t understand the mindset of people who think they’re funny. You would have to be simple-minded not to see the creepy element in them. Traditionally clowns were mimes and not allowed to speak in costume. Naturally Americans destroyed that tradition as they do everything else.
