When did Digital Nomad mean "fast travel"? It doesn't. I've been a nomad for nearly 20 years. The trick is always going to be slow not rapid travel. I have a whole life time ahead of me on the road. There's plenty of time to see the things I want to see and even if I could travel daily... I'd never see everything and that's OK.

Digital Nomad began to mean "fast travel" as soon as the new crop of 20-30 somethings decided to make in all about them. There are many, many of us that have been quietly living/working/exploring other countries for decades (30 years for me) living life as we want not needing approval of the herd.

You pretty much nailed it. Same thing happened to me. I traveled for two years around the world. I never expected it to last a lifetime and through traveling I realized why. Like you it was because I needed a sense of community, a feeling of home and a routine. So now I have a homebase and travel from here on shorter and longer trips to other semi homebases and random places we feel like exploring.

Liebe Conni, danke für Deinen tollen Blog und die Videos die ich erst vor ein paar Tagen durch Christoph´s Gastbeitrag bei Dir eintdeckt habe. Du sprichst mir aus dem Herzen. Auch erst vor kurzem habe ich Staatenlos auf der Suche nach Orten an denen man frei leben und arbeiten kann, gefunden. Ständig unterwegs und in fremden Betten zu schlafen ist gar nicht meins und ich brauche meine Community (bin Nia Teacher, Pilates und Yoga Lehrerin in Österreich) und meinen Hund... mit Hund ist das Reisen gleich mal exponentiell schwieriger... und es schließt viele Ziele aus, aber dafür hab ich meine Mini-Community immer dabei. ;-) So bin ich gerade genau wie Du dabei mich und mein Leben neu zu definieren und freue mich auf Deine nächsten Beiträge! I have often thought about nomadic lifestyle and can see why people are attracted to it. I like the idea of travelling and with minimum negative impact such as using cars, flying etc to be done slowly and blending in. At 63 I regret not having done this even just for a few months and keep thinking about it while also having to manage some health issues. Well done on your channel. I have just discovered it and find your philosophy on life very interesting

I am thinking about going 2 or 3 times a year to a destination for a few weeks or a month and staying home in Belgium for the rest of the year, so I can see my family and my dogs but this way I can also visit awesome destinations. Genau :) Also ich interessiere mich ja auch sehr für diesen Lebensstil, aber eben nur, um die Freiheit zu haben arbeiten zu können, wann und wo ich möchte. Dieses Hin- und Hergereise ist gar nicht meins. Ich möchte zwar auch bald länger auf Reisen gehen, aber sehr langsam, d.h. mehrere Monate an einem Ort. Ich mag es, irgendwo heimisch zu werden und die Gegend und die Leute richtig kennenzulernen. Hab ich schon im Auslandssemester damals gemerkt, wie schön ich das fand, dass Schweden quasi mein zu Hause wurde, ich dort meine Routinen entwickelt hab usw. Mich würde das auch total stressen, ständig zu reisen. Aber es gibt ja auch Leute, für die ist das das Richtige - zumindest für eine Weile. Ich kann mir nicht vorstellen, dass man sowas sein Leben lang durchhält. ;) Deine Vorstellung mit den mehreren Homebases gefällt mir.

Ich war auch in Schweden zum Auslandsjahr! Und zu dem Zeitpunkt hatte ich sogar drei "homes": wo meine Mama ist, meine deutsche Unistadt und die Stadt in Schweden. Wenn ich gesagt habe "I go home" haben die Leute immer nachfragen müssen, wo ich jetzt genau hingehe ;) Es heißt ja "home is where the heart is" und ich glaube, das bezieht sich nicht auf einen einzelnen Menschen sondern auf community. Ich habe keine "Heimat" im eigentlichen Sinne (war als Kind in 4 Kindergärten im In- und Ausland, danach zur Schulzeit an einem Ort, aber da wohnt niemand mehr den ich kenn). "Heimat" oder "Home" ist für mich vor allem mit Menschen verknüpft, nie mit Orten. Und für mich ist Onlinebusiness aktuell vor allem mit Time Freedom verbunden. Ich bin sozusagen ein Time Nomad ;)

Thanks for this video! As I've been delving more into "digital nomad" reports, I could feel this coming up as a conflict: in one way, I am already location-independent, since I work from home or anywhere with an internet connection; in another, I live with an elderly cat and am committed to not moving her around so much anymore and not leaving her in the care of other people too much either. So how do I combine that with my childhood ambition, which was never for a specific job, let alone marriage/family/house, but just knowing I was going to keep on being a nomad, which my parents had modelled in my early years? For me the solution is really about an inner attitude, of not being stuck in place, of having the option to change if life works out that way, and of doing things my own way, while also allowing myself to throw down roots sometimes. I will never be that person whose family has been on the same patch of land for hundreds of years, so calling myself nomadic is also a piece of self-acceptance in that sense. From the title, I thought initially you were going to talk about how travel itself isn't environmentally sustainable - constant flying certainly isn't, and I hope the artificially low fuel costs will stop at some point. It also feels to me that our bodies need time to arrive, and that there's value in engaging with the earth as other than a tourist, rapidly sight-seeing very superficially - fun though that can be as well.

for me the Digital Nomad movement or living a Location Independent Lifestyle, has always been more about living a Workplace Independent Life. Having skills to allow people to work from anywhere, for anyone, or on their own, without the traditional ties of a workplace, whether as an employee or even a conventional office set-up with office based employees if you run your own business.

For me, I pretty much need to spend a MONTH in a location. I always evaluate the time as losing 2-3 days with EACH move ( basically cutting work hours available that week in half ) . So .... it's just impossible to keep up a 30-40 hour 4 week month going if you are moving more than once a month. I'm really so glad I've been " planted " for 4-5 months! I just want to avoid winter weather mostly v.s. hopping around at a crazy pace. ~Amanda

Hey Conni! I think that this is really nice that you share this realistic view on your life. I don't think, though, that you need to apologise :D You are just in an advanced state of being a digital nomad, basically meaning that you have done it now for a while. But so many people still have it all in front of them and then they will get to your stage one day. So, it is kind of nice to know what waits around the corner Anyway. I would not call myself a digital nomad, but I would like to become kind of one!? I have been living abroad now for a few years, studying abroad and doing exchanges. But I have also noticed that I would love to find a digital business so that I don't have to give up that freedom. Maybe in a few years, I want to move again? Currently, I am waiting for my next visa for Australia and don't really feel like constantly looking for new jobs there. Blablabla. I mean, maybe there are just different kinds and stages of and motivations for being a digital nomad. In the end, I guess, what is most important is that we are happy and free :) I think that what you are doing is great.

Great video, and I think the conclusions are true for most people, but it is dependent upon context. I'm a nomad, and I travel with my wife, since we're both from different countries and visas are difficult. We spend 1-3 months in each place, to give some stability, and we both have online jobs for double the income. We don't want kids, and we both love travelling, so while we do plan to rent an apartment long-term in some specific place and work on a visa for both of us to stay in one place if we want, we do intend to travel for the rest of our lives. Some of the major obstacles that are present for other people aren't there for us. I'd be lying if I said we didn't have goals that are location-dependent for the future, but I think the extent to which the lifestyle is sustainable is dependent upon how location-dependent your goals are, I guess. I suppose not caring about having kids is a huge benefit, as is having a spouse who's willing to travel constantly! We're very lucky.

Having worked in U.S. Campaigns and elections I lived in 15 states over 8 years. It totally took a tool on my body and in the end affected my energy. However, my intent on living a location independent lifestyle is to be able to train and race and work nomadically as I check off competing in my bucket list road marathons and trail ultramarathons around the globe but also in the U.S.

That is what I was waiting for! The first two thoughts I had wanting to be a gay "nomand" just because of a more free lifestyle or by not being the subject of a system (which in germany or swisslandia you defenitely are). Travelling is beautiful as long as you can do it from a homebase whenever you want. Finding though a spiritual gayfriendly warm place by the sea is soo difficult. So thats why I am travelling, to find a more livable healthier (spiritual/nature) homebase than I had in the queerest city in the world, f* cold Berlin. I personally would be concerned living in the US but would be interested to hear more about gay life /communitiy over there or somewhere else you had been checking out. What about new zealand? It can get pretty cold there also. I loved it when I was there almost 16 years ago ;-)

Interessanter Beitrag. Ich finde auch, dass es auf lange Sicht gesehen sicher etwas einsam sein kann, immer alleine auf Achse zu sein und um die Welt zu reisen. Aber warum sich nicht mal an den richtigen Nomaden orientieren, die von Oase zu Oase reisen. Man hat ja schon recht viel gemeinsam. Manche zieht es z. B. nur zu bestimmten Jahreszeiten in andere Gegenden (im Winter weg aus Deutschland). Aber die richtigen Nomaden ziehen als Gruppe oder als Stamm durch die Gegend und haben dadurch immer viel Sozialkontakt. So könnte man doch auch durch die Welt reisen. Als "Digitaler Nomaden Stamm" :D Man gibt zwar etwas Freiheit auf, aber hat dafür seine Gruppe immer um sich.

I would love to live for a while in Vancouver but Canada will only have me for 3 months. But to go to Canada from here you have to make a stop in the US and they charge you a visa for that, plus the Canadian visa. It's a lot of money. But I would love to go to the Pacific Northwest, that's the idea.

Really? It seems like such a strange thought? Any business or investment comes with risk, luck, individual circumstances, aptitude, and so on. Nothing in life falls into your lap and sometimes all the good feelings and hope and hardest efforts come to nothing. I think Digital Nomad existence is about opening up possibilities to work differently and not be tied to any one location. I never imagined it would be easy or would oblige you to travel. I have yet to see any digital nomad imply this. Maybe it is just who I subscribe to. I wasn't being snarky, I was and am genuinely surprised that people are that naive

well sure if you think you will be changing hotels/apartments/cities/countries every 2 weeks or month duh. gets old fast. try being more mature and look at it...well never mind. It's not for you because you haven't figured it out yet. you did realize you wouldn't have any family around right? and no friends around right? and language barriers...reading local signs/info would be a problem...right? You have to make all the arrangements, medical coverage, possible drivers license docs, visas, no support - you are on your own...but you knew that...also Might be some people that don't like your "look"...some might even take offense, some might laugh at you and point... need to be ready for that when you are a girl who looks like a boy, but you know that. Yah, but when you figure it out - it works fine. Once you wake up.

Conni Biesalski, what he means is that the original "nomads" were people that travelled through the desert. One was born into this ethnic group. So he says that ....I'm interpreting here...if your are from this nomadic tribe/born into this nomadic tribe, you will be fine with 'no place' being a lifestyle because that is your genealogy.

I have sustained this lifestyle for over 10 years. You have to know business and be smart. Judging on this video, you lack in both areas.

You shall not judge me on one video, my friend. I run a very successful online business and have created one of Germany's biggest travel blogs and have given talks and workshops and many interviews around the world - many of them revolving around being a digital nomad and running a location-independent business. Smartness is subjective I would say - I wouldn't classify a person leaving a nasty comment like yours as smart. But hey, that's just me ;)
