In this passionate call to action, 16-year-old climate activist Greta Thunberg explains why, in August 2018, she walked out of school and organized a strike to raise awareness of global warming, protesting outside the Swedish parliament and grabbing the world's attention. "The climate crisis has already been solved. We already have all the facts and solutions," Thunberg says. "All we have to do is to wake up and change."

I'm sorry to say that no amount of hope or human actions will stop the ongoing mini ice age. It's not because we have pushed ourselves beyond a point of no return. It's actually because we are going through a solar cycle called the "Grand Solar Minimum". There is nothing we can do to stop the effects our Sun has on our climate. Please do some research and discover the truth for yourself.

@@michaeloreilly657 Thank you, Michael, for taking the time to do the research. My concern is that the science we are expected to listen to may be designed to keep us in the dark. Most scientists/experts rely on grant money to fund their research projects and if they don't follow the party line they run the risk of not getting funded or worse, losing their jobs. I know exactly what Greta is saying, but we literally have no effect over the Sun's power on this earth. Humanity will need to stick together to survive but even that won't stop what's coming.

Before listening, I could have said that ‘I am quite aware of the environmental changes and enduring chaos that has been around our civilization for as long as I can remember’, but I have never been this ashamed for the fact that I thought so. Maybe I was ignorantly a little posh about the fact that I actually cared, compared to my colleagues and families, even though I knew thoroughly that only caring was and will never be enough. After watching the speech I felt doubtful about all the superficial views that I had kept for the past few years of my entire life. I immensely relate to her refer that survival is as means of black and white. We should be desperate about our very status, not just merely understanding the current situation, for it depends on our lives and future generations. I felt the urge to take action immediately as I was encouraged to do so, but was soon depressed by the fact that I had nothing to change at hand. Even so, I promise myself to start from the very basic things such as consumption to transportation and many other requirements I could find from my every-day life.

I don't know about everywhere but at least in Belgium she is mocked by all media. When the papers found out she has selective mutism everyone thought she was a freak. Comments were saying "at one point she didn't talk for a whole year, that's not normal" while all I could think was that this girl has selective mutism, barely talks, probably never in front of large audiences, but for this cause she is talking. She is talking in front of audiences and camera's and that's so impressive and it also shows how important this is to her. edit: for everyone saying she has narcissistic personality disorder: she is very idealistic and does not show much empathy, these are signs of narcissism. But these are also signs of autism, and the DSM-5 (basically a guideline for diagnosis) will tell you to first consider other psychological disorders and when none of those can explain the signs, only then you consider a personality disorder. She shows signs of autism, has an autism diagnosis so let's leave it at that.

Big Oil has known about global warming through hydrocarbon emissions for about 70 years. So long as they get richer they don't care. Politicians who depend on Big Oil for campaign donations won't do anything about this issue. (Trump just revoked the power of the state of California to cap auto emissions. Because California is such a huge part of the market, since the 1970s, the entire auto industry has built all cars slated for sale in America to Californian standards. By scrapping those standards Trump has basically changed it so all new cars in the US will pollute more. This is going in the OPPOSITE direction of what we need . . . .) So long as the politicians get re-elected they don't care. That means all of the GOP and all of the corporate Democrats. The world cannot move forward on this issue without the active participation of the US. We need to put more progressives in office . . . . GOTV!

The carbon circle of CO2 and O2 had been balanced in the past, until we began to emit more CO2 than ever, which stays in the atmosphere and absorbs and emits radiant energy that should have been released back to space. Currently about 57% of human-emitted CO2 is removed by the biosphere and oceans. What about the rest? It adds up with time and reaches all time highest with every passing year. CO2 in the atmosphere goes up and down but it had never gone pass 300 ppm in the last 800,000 years; it passed 400 this decade. No one questions the important of CO2, in fact life on Earth can't live without CO2. However, too much CO2 and greenhouse gasses causes what called greenhouse effect, which can easily be reproduced in experiments. “50 years now yall been saying were gonna die cuz climate change wait global warming”. Well, floods happen 15 times more than that in the past since 2005, and extreme temperature events 20 times. People died in these events which happen more frequently. The problem is we can not Produce enough reliable electricity to power all homes businesses etc and electric cars. Nuclear but that has serious draw backs also. Natural gas is the cleanest fossil fuel which runs most power plants, so to power your electric vehicles you burn Natural gas to get that power. Solar and Wind farms help but to keep up with demand we would need 10 times as much as we have now plus we have to replace and maintain what is in place now. Fossil fuels are needed to produce all of this. Electricity is not a low cost item and to achieve any kind of sustainable level the cost would be so high most people would not be able to afford to heat their home. Fossil fuels is used for planting and harvesting crops, if that can be changed to electric equipment fine but food costs would be through the roof.

@@Uriel238 There are a few more issues with nuclear power than just the radioactive waste and the potential for a nuclear catastrophe. If you want to completely eradicate all carbon emissions you simply use up too much uranium much too fast. That would only last for a few decades. Also it is not so easy to adjust nuclear power plants to unsteady power consumption you get from solar panels and wind power. In theory it is easy to shut down a nuclear power plant in reality that is quite dangerous and not so easy to pull off. And as a last point building nuclear plants is quite expensive im comparison to solar panels and wind mills and takes too long. Also why use a technology that we already know has some issues we don´t have any solution for yet when there already exists alternatives that are a lot less expensive, easier to build, widely accessible and equally efficient. That is not reasonable at all.

As you have argued, the current school is closed and some groups, organizations, corporations, corporate workers, and the majority of employees at work are in a position to take a leave of absence, which, on the one hand, is badly affected and has a bad effect. On the one hand, the crowded streets on the one hand were also crowded, and as the mountain got colder, animals appeared and saw the news of wildlife appearing (happening). As the horror and spread of the Corona2019 virus is still dangerous and disruptive, the likelihood of harm and catastrophe will increase as well as the natural disaster.

There was a thing in my country about solar powered public transportation, but it was expensive and drivers didnt have enough money for upkeep so it didnt get far. This also made me think about the thing with sugar, how the sugar industry paid scientists to say that sugar has no negative effects on your health and all fault lies on fat, because well, they cant exactly make money if people are using less sugar right? Oil is still being pumped from the ground, lots of money is being made, technically we have solar powered vehicles but also not everyone has enough money to afford it. Not to mention the people making money from oil will be like oh no they will lose part of their money making source of income if people are able to switch to solar/electric powered vehicles. I’m not sure where I’m going with this, but the world is unfortunately not black and white. People are stubborn and greedy and the world runs on money. It should be black and white though. oh yes climate change still doesn't exist and the the fucking enonomy matters more than our actual future, idgaf even if she read two articles, climate change is real and even if its a hoax she's not gaining anything, ive personally read and researched a lot about climate change from government reports to petty karen blog posts. its real and we're all fucked if we still think humanly disagreements matters more than our fucking existence in the future.

Actually, she is gaining a lot. She has people that tell her what to say, handlers that schedule her actions, and financers that finance her and her family. All of them are Marxists. The problem with people like you is that you pretend to be the only ones to care about the planet and you think that it entitles you to question other people's motives. Well, DC the reason why other people question climate change is because there is no scientific evidence that it is of a magnitude to be dangerous to mankind. And furthmore, the planet is actually getting greener due to CO2 fertilization. So, if you have researched climate change, tell me what the value of climate sensitivity is. Tell me what the meaning of the logarithmic response of global temperature to additional CO2 means. Tell me why the biomass of the earth is increasing. Or do they not discuss those issues when you do your research in the Huffington Post or in Salon or whatever Marxist propaganda source you frequent. www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/2016/carbon-dioxide-fertilization-greening-earth

I'm doing all of those things. Just for the record, I'm almost totally vegan (for multiple reasons), being largely vegetarian for 29 years; haven't owned a car in over 6 years; have driven maybe 3000 miles in those years; rarely use a disposable shopping bag; and, in fact, haven't been on a plane in almost 22 years. But that's not all that's needed. You need to INFORM YOURSELF. And you need to think about what you see in the media, and discuss it with others-including IRL, which BTW is TTTT where I could do better. This is extremely important. Why? Because there are those who are pushing solutions to our climate problems which are very dangerous, and sometimes frankly just delusional. Those bad ideas exist on BOTH ENDS of the spectrum of discussion (and even in the middle). They must be challenged. This is every bit as important as our individual actions, because the wrong kind of big project could easily undo all the good that individuals accomplish.

@@NoxBellatricis Being vegetarian is not a better step, but it can be a less worse step (by using the word better you are suggesting that eating all animal products is good). Veganism is not only about the environment, but also about animal suffering. Strictly speaking there is more suffering in a certain amount of dairy calories then in the same amount of meat calories. The dairy industry is among the cruellest on earth. kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5SxaIZ9fNR2hKs
