Super Bowl XIV between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Los Angeles Rams might be best known for the Steelers winning their fourth Super Bowl title in six years, and for setting the attendance record by having over 103,000 people packed into the Rose Bowl to watch the game. However, off the field, the game was a disaster. From awful parking to a massive ticket sale controversy to tons of fighting in the stands, Super Bowl XIV was atrocious. This is the story behind the forgotten disaster of Super Bowl 14
NOTE: There is one glaring omission in the video that I don't know how it slipped by me, but Super Bowl XVII was also hosted in Pasadena at the Rose Bowl

I had to rewind because it was there 3 more times at the Rose Bowl. It happens! I do believe the last time it hosted the Super Bowl was a last-minute replacement. Tempe, Arizona was supposed to host the big game, but because the state not honoring MLK Day as a holiday, the NFL moved it to Pasadena.

Brookshier, a few years later, would remark after plugging an upcoming Lousiville basketball game on CBS, that "they have a collective IQ of about 40, but they can play basketball." That Ram team was riddled with injuries all season long, and got healthy by playoff time. That same Ram team defeated the Steelers in the regular season in 1978. They matched up well, especially defensively.
@jonemeigh5588
@jonemeigh5588 2 жыл бұрын
There’s a good reason for that. The Rams’ defensive coordinator was Bud Carson, who from 1973-1977 was the defensive coordinator for the Steelers…so he developed pretty much one of the best defenses of all time, the Steel Curtain. Terry Bradshaw noted that the Super Bowl against the Rams was such tough sledding because Carson knew all their plays and signals. Incidentally the play that finally put a dagger in the Rams’ fans hearts…60 Prevent Slot Hook and Go…had been installed during practice week precisely to counter Carson knowing their plays. Only problem is every time they tried it in practice, it failed because the safety in defense that was back to help kept coming over and broke it up. But it worked in the game for what was ultimately the winning touchdown pass…because the help in safety blew his coverage and DIDN’T come over. So TD (even though Bradshaw was off with the throw and Stallworth had to catch it over his wrong shoulder). They did use it a second time and this time the safety did come over…but it was a better throw and Bradshaw still got it in there…this time the safety prevented a TD.
@jimdog6014
@jimdog6014 2 жыл бұрын
Your point is well taken. I believe Bradshaw even stated that Jack Reynolds seemed to have an answer for everything the Steelers tried. My point is that the video made the Rams out to be a talentless fluke. That Ram team knocked the defending NFC champion Cowboys out of the playoffs, and had the defending Superbowl champs on the ropes for 3 qtrs.

As far as Super Bowl "regions" go, you have to mention the Detroit Super Bowl between the Steelers and the Seahawks. While Detroit is eight hours away from Pittsburgh, so it can't be considered "near", so MANY Steelers fans packed the stands that NO other Super Bowl, not even last year's or the ones you mentioned which played within a team's region, ever had such a "home" field advantage for one team.
@eddiejc1
@eddiejc1 2 жыл бұрын
@Chris Smith Even in that case, there were fewer 49ers fans in the stands than Steelers fans in Detroit. Another honorable mention is the Rams-Patriots Super Bowl a few years ago. Patriots fans weren't as loud as Steelers fans, but they were the ONLY fans you heard. I don't think I heard ANY cheering for the Rams and I only saw one or two people in the stands wearing Rams paraphrenalia. I'm sure it would have been a much different case if it were the ST. LOUIS Rams playing against the Patriots.

It's not unheard of for teams to have a average regular season then excel in the playoffs, the 67 packers and the 80 Raiders come to mind. Of course the opposite is way more common. In 1979( a overall weak NFC season) the rams beat a highly talented dallas cowboys 11-5 ( I was 12 years old and remember the exciting game, I think you can watch it on KZbin) and a cinderella tampa bay buccaneers 10-6 and gave the favored pittsburgh steelers a run for their money for most of the game.

There were national and entertainment boycott's of Arizona and the NFL and it's owners finally decided to take the Super Bowl away from them. I don't know why they chose Pasadena besides already having hosted before. It may just be the closest NFL ready stadium at 6 hours away. But they could have just as easily held it in San Diego again. Arizona would officially make MLK a holiday, the last state to do so. The governor would be impeached for other things. And Tempe would get SB XXX in 1996.

@Fries Yes, Super Bowl XXVII was the last to be played in a non-NFL stadium. As to San Diego-Jack Murphy Stadium not hosting the game, this was before they fully enclosed the stadium (funnily enough, more people attended the pre-expansion Super Bowl {XXII} than either of the post-expansion Super Bowls).

Coincidentally Super Bowls XXVII & XXX featured the Dallas Cowboys All 3 Cowboys 90s wins were on NBC because the pattern got messed up due to the changing TV deals & the 1992 Winter Games Starting w/II: Even numbered games were on CBS, Odd numbered games on NBC Then ABC joined the mix starting with Super Bowl XIX, followed by NBC XX, CBS XXI Divisible by 3 = CBS Then after that ABC, NBC Until 1991 when CBS wanted XXVI as their lead in to the Winter Games… and the halftime show was a disaster NBC got XXVII & then XXVIII via a special bid ABC XXIX, NBC XXX, Fox XXXI, NBC XXXII The pattern was somewhat restored when Fox aired XXXIII Fox: divisible by 3 Then ABC, CBS When NBC took over SNF, they replaced ABC in the rotation Fox: Divisible by 3 Then NBC, CBS And then CBS & NBC swapped spots because NBC wanted the Super Bowl as their lead in to the 2022 Winter Games much like how Super Bowl LII was 4 years earlier And now ABC-ESPN is part of the rotation in the new TV contract Fox gets Super Bowl LVII, then games in the affiliated season divisible by 4. Example: 2024 season, divisible by 4, that season’s Super Bowl (LIX) will be on Fox NBC gets games divisible by 4 as part of Winter Games lead-in. Super Bowls LX, LXIV, LXXII… CBS gets games divisible by 2 but not 4 (LVIII, LXII, LXVI) Other games: ABC-ESPN (LXI, LXV, maybe LXIX if the pattern holds which would be nice)

It's a very old venue in any event. The NFL prefers newer venues for Super Bowls. There are a number of Super Bowl venues that have since been demolished, including one that opened in my lifetime, the Georgia Dome. The only reason the Rose Bowl is still standing is because of its sentimental value. The idea of building a new stadium in Pasadena is considered blasphemous.

There is a difference between the game being a disaster and how the game was run being a disaster. You can do better. As for the parking, that's how politicians think. When there is a bad situation (for example, limited parking) their solution is to make it worse. Whenever there is a big event at the Rose Bowl (>20K); parking will be a hassle. The stadium, though in a beautiful location, is also a victim of where it is. Said location, at the bottom of the Arroyo Seco, is surrounded by one of the ritziest neighborhoods in Pasadena that is also hilly. The closest mass transit stop today (which did not exist in 1980) is miles away on Old Town Pasadena, and requires an uphill walk. An unavoidable part of the stadium's problem is when it was built, 1923, and the utterly different planning considerations that were in effect at that time (also, the stadium was built above a landfill). If any game, concert, or other event is put on sale for the Rose Bowl, any true Angeleno carefully weighs whether or not they really need or want to go to said event to this day.

The 1979 Rams were beset by injuries, and that's the primary reason they had what was for them a subpar season. But the Rams were the dominant team in the NFC West throughout the 1970s. They just weren't able to get over the hump in the playoffs prior to 1979. Also, The Rams were one of the few teams that gave the Steelers trouble in the '70s. It was a dumb decision, but not a Dumb Decision, as in one that looks bad from the outset. Personally, I would have kicked the field goal there to extend the lead to 24-3, but the right play call could have made it 28-3. Whether that buries the Bengals or not is a whole different question.

@@stevenbauer4799 Yeah, I think his actual, last, film, was, called, Avalanche Express, but, he died during production, as an aside, as, great, as the film, was, his accent, was, an atrocity, too sad.

@@matthewdaley746 yep. Liked Shaw, great actor. But listening to him almost mumble thru that accent as quint and mr. green was painful to say the least.

@@stevenbauer4799 Actually, Quint, wasn't, so, bad, after, he, more, than, made up for, it, with, his Indianapolis speech, (which, wasn't, rehearsed, and, wouldn't, get, another, take), his wretched Israeli accent, though, was, truly, a bridge too far.

The real disaster was how 9-7 rams leading at the half with franco and swann out still couldn't stop tb to stallworth as super steelers win their fourth s b. Rams dominated the nfc west in the '70's but didn't have the qb to put them over the top. Rams were always reaching at qb. hadl, jaws, harris, haden, ferragamo, even 4 games of washed up joe willie weren't gonna do it.

Not, as disastrous as the Steelers, were, going forward, they wouldn't even make the, Playoffs, again, until, 1982, only, because, of, "The, Strike," and, totally, wrecked their franchise by passing on Dan Marino in, 1983, they wouldn't find their answer at, QB, until, 2004.

@@matthewdaley746 yep. Didn't even win a home playoff game until '95. Everyone knew that was the super steelers last hurrah. Then noll fell in love with the big dt senor sack as the serviceable mark malone, tomzac, bubby brister, and others qb'd steelers until then.

@@stevenbauer4799 Possibly, but, Dan Marino still played in their own city, I blame, The, Rooney, Family, look at them from the time they owned the team until Chuck Noll arrived, later, look at the team from, 1980-2004, the numbers, are, unbelievable, for, what they're, not.

@@matthewdaley746 Could have been a rooney call. Who knows? noll had control over player moves and always believed in defense. Maybe steelers were turned off by those supposed drug allegations floating around at the draft. A lot was floating around about then. Either way with marino sittng there on a big platter for them steelers blew it big time.
