There was a webtoon, which is basically a manga you scroll vertically from Korea called dead days if I remember right. This story had people recognize zombies but subverted the genre by having characters expect them to act like they do in movies, but having their guiding motivations be entirely different and not obvious. the reader and characters are both are equally surprised. It was a good read in a world of average and flawed zombie stories. It's one of those stories you wish had been longer, but few writers are brave enough to end their story when the story they want to tell ends, most writers just keep it going until people are sick of it or they drag it out.

Those words were not translation errors. The words were perfect for the context, they just aren't seen or heard frequently. That's what we've come to in "the West"... Chinese shows using better English than Hollywood. Some great Korean shows I enjoyed in the past year - "Under the Queen's Umbrella", "Alchemy of Souls", "The King: Eternal Monarch". Fantastic shows.

@Blisterdude1233 ай бұрын
I think a big part of why Kingdom works is it COMPLETELY removes the characters, and thus you the audience, from the comfort of meta zombie lore. Even if you know, and understand what's happening, the characters do not. The concept of a disease, a plague, parasites and infection, is so alien to these people that yes, it all appears so incomprehensible and horrible. They just don't understand, outside of a few key characters, until it's too late. The undead, zombies, magic and sorcery. And then there's the lack of 'shoot 'em in the head lol' security. They've gotta get up close and personal with the things to even stop them, most of the time. I haven't been so tense watching a show as I was watching the finale of season 2 of Kingdom for a long, loooooooong time. Funny thing is, it seems to go from novel, to comic, to the big screen. It's neat to see some of these stories get wider audiences but it seems a lot of their content in the last year or so had gotten stuck with everyone copying everyone else. Hopefully they get some new content soon. It's kind of silly in a way, so many shows have one problem, poor writing but great concept. Just not with expert writers to pull out together and then do many don't do well. The USA really has this issue as well. It has incredible storytelling, high stakes thrills, political intrigue that beats even that of Game of Thrones, zombies, and it makes the audience feel that they could be immersed in the fantastical world of Joseon Era Korea. To see great characters like Crown Prince Yi Chang, Doctor Seo-bi, the loyal bodyguard Moo-Young, and the corrupt First Minister Cho Hak-Ju brought onto my screen reminds me of how Korea still believes in the magic of cinema and good storytelling. Watched Kingdom years ago. It goes so hard. If you are a fan of period genres that aren't trying to pretend it's historically accurate, the zombie element is a very welcome twist. Great recommendation!

Funnily enough zombie apocalypse fits the time period well, since the series takes place few decades after the japanese invasion which was also a seemingly unstoppable savage bloodthirsty steamroller army that didn't spare anyone. The historical invasion even plays a role to the events of the tv show and how the court became aware of a zombie disease.

Honestly my favorite character is actually the highborn noble who starts out as a cowardly elite who cares only about his own comfort, but by the end of the show, ends up growing a spine thanks to the positive influence of both a dogged female nurse as well as witnessing firsthand the nobility of the illegitimate prince. It goes to show that even the most irredeemable people, should the goodness in them be allowed to grow, can become paragons all of their own choosing. At first I couldn’t stand his butt, but as he continued to change for the better, I was cheering on his character every time he showed up on screen.

Yes! He really grew from a comic relief guy to a man. That moment when he realized that he simply couldn't give the order for the execution of the soldiers' families was awesome. And the doctor! Nice piece Drinker, thanks for covering this. Kingdom is absolutely the best TV series I watched over lock down, and I've still not found anything since that has bettered it. From EP 1 to the one-off Ashin of The North, it was well worth the effort. When so many US and UK series see their viewership decline as each episode past they could learn a lot from the way K-Drama at its finest progresses narratives, explores characters and successfully engages a growing audience. And it has a zombie tiger , win-win.

I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment regarding "Kingdom." I truly enjoyed the two seasons and wanted more. Fortunately, the producers gave us the Netflix prequel, "Kingdom - Ashin of the North." It tells the story of Ashin, a character who was introduced at the end of season two. Ashin's story was extremely moving to me and provided the beginning of the zombie outbreak. I highly recommend you watch "Kingdom - Ashin of the North." to complete your understanding of this compelling world. PS: I hope we get a future series that tells us what happens next . . .

A welcome review from the Drinker! "Kingdom" is one of the most exciting and thoughtful dramas I have seen. It has real emotional charge along with set pieces to get your heart pounding and twists that will have you biting the skin off your knuckles. The spin off series "Kingdom: Ashin Of The North" is also brilliant and fleshes out (sorry, couldn't resist it) the origins of the zombie apocalypse. The series producers kept a sequel to that open but I think Covid got in the way, along with (bizarrely) less favourable reviews. Again, I was totally invested in the characters and the astonishing action. Since Hollywood insisted on passing off tired old plots, stereotypical characters and cliched dialogue as "original series", my brother and I have watched virtually nothing but South Korean dramas in the last two years and they rarely disappoint. They're generally better plotted with fresh ideas, more exciting, and have seriously charismatic actors and actresses. More than this, they often have a rich vein of humour which makes us laugh aloud and scenes of real emotional heft. On top of all that, the music is frequently brilliant. The dramas cover such a wide net, subject-wise, so there is something for everyone. I could recommend so many shows but I'll just suggest five of my favourites: "Hotel Del Luna"; "All Of Us Are Dead" (second series coming), "Vincenzo"; "Bloodhounds", and "Arthdal Chronicles" (the first series is on NETFLIX but the equally excellent second series, strangely, is on DISNEY + with a different main actor - a result of Covid yet again). Disney is virtually unwatchable these days but they do have a small number of excellent South Korean dramas, including the brilliant superhero series "Moving" and the slow-burning but superb "Vigilante". South Korean series are an absolute joy and I hope they continue to enthrall us for years to come. I'd love to see more Drinker videos on these dramas. PS - viewers should watch in Korean with English subtitles to get the full effect.
