Nope, Vader giving orders to actually competent Stormtroopers which then proceed to wipe out the rebels. Vader is too important to be busy dealing with lowly enemy soldiers, he´s got people for that. THIS is how you do Darth Vader! Not turning him into your toy Vader that slashes everything with a rebel helmet just as you used to do when you were a kid.

To be completely fair, they did *exactly* the same thing with Han in the first two movies: He's a self-serving snark who's grudgingly along for the ride through the middle of ANH, then wants to sod off before the big final fight, before having a change of heart and turning up at the last moment to help save the day. Awesome. Gets a medal and everything. Next movie: Hangs out at Echo base for a bit, saves Luke, *then decides he'd rather fuck off and leave the Rebels to it* Yeah, don't go easy on JJ's trilogy, but don't forget that *all* Star Wars films are fundamentally shit when viewed as a whole canon. They're not even necessarily shit in different ways (unless you want to be rabidly socio-politically motivated about it).

The Emperor's Throne Room scenes always make me well up. The music, the visual and emotional atmosphere, the stakes and deaths piling up outside. Then, as Luke is going nuts on Vader, the music turns into this corrupted version of a Hero's warsong, on the surface sounding righteous but listening closer sounds unstable and slightly off. It's the darkside masking itself with righteousness, showing that although Luke seems to be getting the upperhand in the fight physically, he is in more danger than he ever has been. Just a beautiful scene. edit: you're rooting for Luke during the whole thing, and when he's got Vader's back against the ropes, you feel this satisfaction of seeing Luke the victor, but it's a sick sense of satisfaction, the kind that can only come from seeing someone else put down. There comes the realization that you're rooting for exactly what the Emperor wants. These scenes make you think about what it is you really want and if the asking price is really worth it.

"I am a Jedi, like my father before me." The Return of the Jedi final duel is so awesome. Literally the only bad thing about it is the fact that the part where Luke loses his cool and starts wailing on Vader allows TLJ fans to use this as justification for Luke pulling his lightsaber on Kylo after having a bad dream. Of course, the point of the duel was for Luke to overcome his anger and show Vader there is still a path to redemption, which is just further evidence that anyone who enjoyed TLJ doesn't understand storytelling.

ROTJ is my favorite Star War period. Because of exactly what you said regarding Luke's darkness is why I find TLJ great. No one ever escapes the shadow. Lucas himself would tell you that. I never took the finale of ROTJ to = Luke is free of darkness. On the contrary, he looks like he has PTSD staring at the burning armor of his father. Thats why RJ used aspects of Lucas's original treatment for episode 7 in his film. The ideation of Luke isolated on an island, afraid of some vague darkness, was concepted by Lucas and the LFL art department in 2014. After 2014, when episode 7 wasn't coming together as hoped, LFL put aside his ideas for a more palatable soft reboot. Non of this means you should like the films whatsoever. It's important to have the correct information however.
@TrueNorthProductions

@@ATATChat you're telling me they were going with Lucas's sequel ideas and then just a year before the movie released they changed the whole plot? Nah, they had TFA planned out in a board room long before. The plan was always to make a soft reboot to cash in on fans nostalgia. Lucas' ST was thrown out almost immediately. Also although Lucas had PTSD Luke in his original ideas, he was portrayed with so much more respect and as soon as rey (not actually rey but the character she was loosley based around) showed up he regained his youthful optimism and trained her and iirc actually came back to save the day in a meaningful way at the end.

Yes, this is such a big part of the start to that fight and setting the mood, as well as display the two characters and their mindset when going into that duel. Luke's saber displays that he's eager to show and use his power and confidence he has built up, whereas Vader is much more calm and doesn't need to show off, because he knows his true power will speak for itself regardless. @Ghostt 6oAo9 Music, yes absolutely. Great lightsaber combat? I admire the two actors for really putting in the effort and rehearsing that fight over and over but to me it ultimately felt too overly-choreographed, more like an elaborate dance routine than an actual fight. There’s even a moment where they both just start spinning their sabers in front of each other for no reason, and once the silly cgi and videogame style platform bits start happening it really distracts from what the whole thing is actually about. Also, the dialogue and line delivery (like the rest of the prequels) was pretty poor, “From my point of view the _Jedi_ are evil!” etc

It also served as "Proof" that he was attacked). In the version I saw as a kid, There was no redirected lightning. It was all absorbed into the lightsaber. His face kinda just gradually changed. He isn't giving it up. The fight with Vader is the closest Luke is to defeat. Luke is hopelessly outmatched in force mastery and ability, he only lives because the Sith's hope to turn him to the dark side. Luke understands that he can't outfight them so he focuses on turning his father and against all odds steers him to redemption. Instead of being turned to the dark side he turns his father to the light, becoming the Jedi master.

the best thing about the Luke v Vader fight in Jedi was Luke clearly using his anger an hatred to gain power and just wail on Vader but after defeating Vader realising that's what happened and refusing to let go of his Jedi training, to the point of accepting his death to the emperor because by denying the emperor he's proved his point. It's that point we know just how powerful Luke really is. Capable of using the dark side for strength but wise enough to not let it take control of him. Also that corridor scene in Rogue One... these guys know that's Vader right? I mean, shooting at him is kinda pointless and then you die... personally if I saw Vader walking down the hall I'd be running like a bitch... being dead doesn't help the cause any so... RUN! I mean Christ, I'm 47 years old, and I'm tearing up thinking about when Luke says "I've got to save you" and his father says "You already have". Fuck. I'll always love the prequels. They got me into Star Wars as a kid and after years of repeat watches of the prequel trilogy (Revenge of the Sith released and came into my life when I was learning more of the darkness in this world and losing my innocence; for example, my older brother told me about how compulsory drafting into military works and that it could happen anytime after I'm 18 with the consequence of non-compliance being jail time, during my first viewing of Episode 3; it freaked me out so much that I had to stop my first viewing of 3 halfway through and cope with that ambivalent mix of feelings like fear, anxiety, and despair for the first time), I finally jumped into the original trilogy and got to experience that as a slightly older kid. Once I got used to the different style of visual effects (I was a very visual kid) I enjoyed them a lot and they planted some good seeds in my subconscious that would later sprout beautifully. I love 'em both equally to this day as an adult and see them as complimentary. I would give George Lucas a hug if I could haha.

The problem is, Maul is just a henchman, and mostly an assassin. He is trained fighter, and for the matter the actor was actually the martial artist in charge of saber choreography. But he is not an actor. That's why he is such a silent antagonist, which is good for his character. I guess they feared he would be underwhelming in a second movie, having not too much to grow outside of the henchman traits. Their would be Palpatine, but mostly in the background pulling strings. And Maul, silent, to build tension with Obi-Wan? I doesn't work well. A hidden antagonist and a silent antagonist is not enough. The did good bringing Christopher Lee, but unfortunately didn't build up his character early enough. He comes soooo late in the 2nd episode, that's a shame. It gives me a little insight into how your mind must work as a writer, and I am impressed. You've actually earned even more respect from me, which I didn't think was possible. Thank you, it's fine to enjoy the duels of the Prequels, they may not have the emotional weight the Original Trilogy fights have, but they're nonetheless spectacular and goosebumps-inducing. That ain't bad at all, but just imagine if the Prequels were more refined and the fights got spectacle AND emotional engagement together, they would've been perfection. ...The throne fight in The Last Jedi or Finn vs Phasma aren't either emotionally impactful or even spectacular. We have zero attachment towards the red guards (why the fuck are they even attacking Kylo, isn't he their superior?), and Phasma is like a much worse version of Episode I Darth Maul, and the choreography is either bland (the only visual thing in Finn vs Phasma is the powerless Michael Bay explosions around them) or it's pure shit (the red guards being purely stupid because otherwise Rey and Kylo would lose, and the infamous dagger being edited out). Fucking rubbish. I really have no clue how Episode 9 will make me care in the slightest for the well-being of anyone. I already know that I'll yell "USE THE FUCKING LIGHTSPEED KAMIKAZE" at every space battle. Fuck you very much, Ryan.

Did you not see Revenge of the Sith? So much emotion going on between Anakin and Obi-wan during their duel... the very duel that had been hinted at since A New Hope... and in my opinion is one of the best duels in Star Wars

"They may not have the emotional weight of the original trilogy" watch revenge of the Sith again. The Anakin and obi wan fight is both sad, and angry. Not to mention it's beautiful. It's 2 brothers duking it out and when obi wan finally cuts Anakin down and he says "you were my brother Anakin" I always well up. And because of that alone it makes my favorite lightsaber duel in star wars.

Cmdr frosty yea couldn’t agree more here. As much as people like to hate on Hayden, I think he was a good Anakin. I especially liked him in the clone wars when he returns to Tatooine. You get to really see the formation of darth Vader here with his hatred for the sand people. Love the scene where he comes out of the sand people hut and starts cutting them down (wish I could’ve seen more of this scene!)

Everyone likes to reference the disappearing dagger from that scene but that’s not even the worst of the ten or so flaws aside from the pathetically lazy choreography. For me, the most cardinal sin is the guard who throws his weapon away as Kylo comes at him so he can die.

#3 should really be #1 - there is so much more going on in this scene that it's more like Vader auditioning Luke, rather than fighting him. There's some taunting and testing, more like sparring between a master and novice. So well done.

Definitely. It is the definition of perfection. The hero about to get humbled by something he has yet to truly understand. The choreography. The fact that I still have no clue how they were able to time their lightsaber strikes along with the squibbs (I’m guessing) to make it seem that they cut the railing on that catwalk, and same for when Vader cuts through those pipes in a rage after Luke nicks him on the shoulder.

A janitor vs the second most powerful sith alive at the time is just such a ridiculous premise. Any disparity of skill of that magnitude should just result in single parry and kill almost instantly. Obi Wan vs Anakin deserves that spot, but you nailed the rest. Rogue One Vader scene was fantastic. Also, I would rank the Vader vs Luke scene in Return of the Jedi as one of the best scenes in cinematic history, not just the best fight scene.

The problem was Finn was *supposed* to have been top of his class when he was in the First Order.
