The Drool Is Out Of Control!

While they’re not quite in the same league as the world’s top droolers, Great Danes can still hold their own when it comes to drooling! However, the exact amount that your dog drools compared to other Danes is largely determined by their genetics.
Great Danes drool more than most other breeds due to their facial composition. Their square jaw and loose lips are not well suited to containing drool i.e. saliva. The folds in the skin allow it to pool and easily run out of the mouth. The worst drooling often occurs immediately after eating, drinking, or exercise.

My husband and I foster for a rescue that handles only the "giant" breed dogs. We have found that it's always good to have "drool towels" on hand in any room. Note: microfiber towels seem to work best

Sometime I'd be interested in seeing your thoughts on raised feeders, I've seen some studies show that they are a contributing factor in bloat and can actually cause it while others recommend them.

Many things cause drool. I live out in the country and my Danes was all ways gently bringing me baby bunnies, snakes, frogs, baby mice. Certain things such as snakes an frogs make dogs drool. So do small teeth. Teeth really help hold in saliva, water. At this time I have an Anatolian Sheperd/Central Asian Shepherd an boy does she drool! I think it's all worth it for the love my big dogs an I have for each other. ♡♡♡

I grew up with two Danes, but as an adult I’ve forgotten everything except large poops and tons of love. I’ve been a Weimaraner enthusiast for many years, but we recently rescued a Dane that is apparently a Dane/Mastiff mix. He’s gorgeous and we love him. Right away, though, I noticed that he does not pant nearly as much as my Weim in situations of stimulation and heat. I first noticed during a car ride, where the Weim pants both from excitement and temp regulation. However, the Dane was hardly panting. This has been consistently true since we got him. During/after exercise, he seems more normal. Then as temps cooled, and we were relaxing on the patio on cool nights, I’ve noticed him shivering a little while lying next to me, when my Weimaraner (who actually gets cold pretty easily) is not yet cold. So it seems obvious that his temperature regulation is not what one would expect. Any experience with this? Should I be worried?

Do you have any advice on how to keep your Danes from getting your house super dirty? We can handle the drool but our problem is all of the mud and dirt they bring in the house! We try to wipe them down as much as we can but our back yard gets very muddy especially in the winter. I think the mud gets stuck inside of their paws. 😩 It doesn’t matter how much we try to stay on top of it our floors stay filthy.

My yard is the same. I have started keeping a bucket at the back door with a washcloth, nail brush and towel and before she’s allowed in after running outside I will wash and dry her feet. Has made a world of difference.

YES! I keep a "jowl towel" on hand and make sure to always wipe him clean so he doesn't drip all over the tile as he walks away. My wife almost took a bad fall once.

Is there any water bowl that helps to catch and seperate the drool so I don't need to change the water bowl everytime they drink? My dane slimes the water every single time he drinks so then my other dogs will not drink. Even with multiple bowls he just slims them all. So I need to change it each time he gets a drink. Its exhausting.

I have a 12 1/2 yo Dane. We’ve tried every supplement and pills for his arthritis back legs. The vet thought he might have Wobblers disease. Any suggestions on how to help him. Cannot go up or down stairs anymore and only short walks

Ive had to start giving my GD water on the back deck. I swear if he drinks inside he just puts it in his mouth and then spits it out. It’s like he’s trying to be a hose!!
