They have the idea that everything should work but the real world is very different, there's always bugs, glitches, etc. And things should be designed accordingly. The tech world needs a change of philosophy about this, there should always be a way to change settings or bypass an automated configuration when necessary because the real world is messy and their position about this only adds complications when not everything works perfectly

Self checkout here in Sweden are pretty good. You just need to scan the items and then put them in the bag. Once all items are scanned you pay for them and move out. It's actually nice using them because I cut the time by a lot instead of being in a normal queue.
@griffithchung93773 жыл бұрын
In theory that's how they're supposed to work here in North America too. In practice, you're lucky if you manage to get through the whole scanning process without the machine's built-in scale either failing to detect an item you've scanned and put into the bag or detecting some weight that isn't there, either of which forces you to stop and wait around like an idiot until a human employee can come around and override the error. Are your Swedish machines calibrated so much better than the ones they installed here? If so, we need some of them in my local supermarket immediately.
@Zefar773 жыл бұрын
@@griffithchung9377 There are 2 types of them. But neither rely on weight to check what you've scanned. The first type just needs you to show the items bar code to the scanner to make it scan the item. The times something needs to be checked is if you bought an item that is age restricted or if you bought a lot of items. Then a worker will come over to scan a few items and it'll be done. But as long as you've done neither of those things you just need to scan the items and put them in a bag. Then pay with your creditcard and you can leave with the receipt that you need to open the gates with. The other type, which I like more, lets you get a personal hand scanner with the store card for that store, that you carry around the store. With this you scan all of the items you need to buy and can put it in a bag right away. As before if you buy an age restricted item or if it's a bit too many items a worker will come over once you need to pay for it to scan a few of the stuff to see that it's valid. To pay for the stuff with the hand scanner, you put it back into one of the slots for a hand scanner and use your store card again. Then you pay for it with your own creditcard and can now leave with the receipt that you need to open the gates with.
@griffithchung93773 жыл бұрын
@@Zefar77 Thanks for the wonderfully detailed explanation. What you describe in Sweden is so elegant and straightforward I could cry. Unfortunately, its apparent reliance on a basic honor system leaves me with no hope whatsoever that US storeowners would ever even consider enacting such a system. Perhaps there are tighter security measures in place beyond what you mentioned, but it sounds as though your stores generally trust their customers to act in good faith, and have determined that whatever small amount might be lost because of laxer security is a price worth paying in exchange for providing a positive shopping experience to those customers. Retailers in this country have made the exact opposite calculation. Profit margins for grocers here are very thin at the best of times, so theft prevention is something of an obsession to them, to the point that they've decided they're okay with inconveniencing their customers a bit so long as it stops even a little unpaid merchandise from escaping the store. Combine that with the general deficit of social trust we operate under compared to what you're probably used to in Scandinavia, and I just can't imagine a world in which retailers here will ever feel anything other than nausea at the thought of members of the public taking items off the shelf and dropping them directly in their own bag without some form of direct human or technological supervision to ensure they were scanned and paid for correctly.

I currently have an HD Fury EDID Doctor on the way due to how magical EDID is. The Fire TV line of devices don’t let you disable HDR fully and neither does the TV. When watching stuff that looks worse in HDR like some Netflix shows, my TV goes right ahead and advertises full HDR support via EDID with no way to change this. Now at least with EDID Doctor I can tell my Fire Stick that my TV does not support HDR so it won’t switch automatically when watching content available in HDR.

4:09 Um, we have found a way that makes self checkouts not suck. The store I go to allows me to scan my purchases as I'm pulling them out of the shelves with an app of theirs on my phone and at the checkout I can transfer all the scanned data to the register in a matter of seconds. The usual time I spend at the checkout is 20-30 seconds tops, if I'm not buying something alcoholic where my age needs to be verified by an employee, and I can scan my groceries while I'm walking from one thing to the next one and put them into my bags right then and there.

Nvidia GPU's still can't output surround sound through TV's because the EDID tells that the TV only has stereo speakers even if it's connected to a receiver via HDMI ARC.
@CaptainVKanth3 жыл бұрын
Which is odd because a check on Nvidia's site shows it supports a range of surround sound option.
@Jeffmorgan833 жыл бұрын
It might depend on the TV. I'm using a GTX1080Ti connected to a Samsung Q800T 8K TV with ARC being sent down to my Denon receiver. I'm getting full surround sound. Edit: I had to adjust a couple ARC settings in the TV menu under "sound options" to make that happen.
@LaDeXi3 жыл бұрын
@@CaptainVKanth Oh it does support and it does work if I connect the GPU directly to the receiver and disable ARC but that kills the audio from TV and Xbox then.

@@Jeffmorgan83 Well there are multiple threads about this issue on Nvidia's own forums ranging all the way back to GT220 era. I have Sony X850C and Yamaha receiver. I have given up on this after I got ultrawide monitor on PC because it would be way too much effort to change the display resolution, refresh rate and sound options every time I want to use TV.

Self Checkout in Norway does not suck. Most of them also has fingerprint readers for verifying age of the person for things like alcohol, if registered in that particular store (data stored locally for privacy).

Hmmm. Why? Because it's mostly a. Non-issue for most people?
@Jaymac7203 жыл бұрын
What’s clickbaity about it? The title is exactly what the video is about. EDID issues are very dumb because they’re likely easy to solve if the manufacturers can agree on how to implement it
@dasistwalter963 жыл бұрын
@@Jaymac720 I don't know what the video is about by looking at the title. It's about SOMETHING about HDMI. I don't know what exactly until I'm already watching the video. Don't you think that "EDID as fast as possible" would be a better title? That's the title format this channel used to use, and what made it so appealing. Sensational quotes like "THE DUMBEST THING ABOUT HDMI" and "WINDOWS WON'T LET YOU DO THIS" actively degrade the quality of an otherwise useful channel. It's bullshit and LMG needs to be called out for it

SO THIS IS WHY!! I have a 4k secondary monitor that almost always shows a black screen or flickering when I first turn on my computer. The only way to fix it is by going (Windows Key) + P to disconnect the monitor, wait a second, and then connect it again. I never understood why this had to be done every time. Now I see that it's probably just forcing EDID to run and correctly configuring the data. Thanks Techquickie!
@barbieroberts66943 жыл бұрын
VGA> HDMI. VGA uses EDID over I²C since the early 90s.
@Thomogon3 жыл бұрын
What's also a gribe I have with HDMI is when you don't use the audio streaming option and opt for a solution like a professional studio audio interface you have to uninstall the HD Audio drivers in your GPU's control panel. If you don't, the two drivers will almost litterally fight for dominance with each other, and Windows doesn't really like that so it just crashes. Took me about 6 months to figure out where the issue came from and how to solve it.

We have figured out how to make self checkout nice: 1. amazon go stores which you guys did a video on 2. we have a system here in a local store called globus (germany) where you get a scanner at the shop entrance and scan everything you put into your basket; you then just pay at the payment terminal in front of the exit and thats it. They now also have an app which lets you scan the items with your phone. I am always annoyed if I need to go to a different store for groceries..

I would search KZbin for something I would like information on, invariably i would be greeted with a video from them with a title that I would know was the video I wanted to watch. Except, this is accurate. HDMI EDID is so inconsistent, and causes so many issues. As a person who works for a manufacturer of HDMI equipment like splitters, switches, EDID emulators, etc. I can tell you that most issues people see with HDMI are either from EDID being dumb as shit, and needing a few hot plugs to kick on correctly, or the occasional HDCP issue with people who don't understand what it is, and why you might not be allowed to connect a paid satellite TV box to a video capture card for instance....

There is another issue with HDMI which is that it uses the same protocols as DVI, one of these protocols prevents more then 2 monitors to be extended (as in different images on each monitor), meaning that those who have triple monitor setups typically have at least one monitor connected via DP and its also why you typically wont find more then 2 DVI based inputs on a graphics card

So basically the old engineering trope of "the more complex a system, the more chances it has to fail" is combined with modern coding practices of "screw thorough testing, if someone finds a bug we'll release a patch later" ... which often doesn't actually happen when users do find the inevitable bugs, because why waste money supporting a product that was already paid for when you can instead put that money into developing the Next Big Thing instead.
@justsomeperson51103 жыл бұрын
In my decades of internal experience as a developer and engineer, this basically comes down to the engineers screaming, "WE NEED MORE RESOURCES TO FIX THIS!!!" while management says back, "Too bad, just make it work. We don't care about ethics or our brand being associated with quality. We only care about making more money." And to some extent, that kind of diametrically opposed balance is needed to keep companies profitable because engineers in search of perfection can lose sight of "good enough". But especially since the internet started making aftermarket patching so easy, management heads have totally dropped any and all concept of quality assurance from their list of priorities and often force development on very outdated engines/designs that aren't meant to do as much as they are forced to, when a simple redesign to be more flexible/robust going forward would save future manhours well beyond their initial cost compared to continuing to force outdated systems to be more than they ever were designed to be. All because that initial much-needed redesign cost might delay the next release slightly and because they fail to see the point of redesigning something that at first glance will do exactly the same thing as the outdated design, not understanding the future benefits vs the future costs. Upper management doesn't care about the future. They're hyper-focused on shining in only the next shareholder/stock period and have no ability to comprehend a five-year plan. And worse, when they do finally almost get the need they've neglected, they think the "easy" and "quick" solution of outsourcing it to the lowest bidding third party with absolutely no internal knowledge or standards to adhere to is going to magically solve everything and not in any way make the situation much much much worse. Or, in other words, it's a multiple- industry-wide phenomenon/problem and not just limited to HDMI.

As someone who's job has been to run a Self Check out, the corporations that pay for these machines have shockingly low standards, and the companies that program them have 0 communication with the people that actually work with them. They are bad, not because we can't figure it out, but because it's not a priority of the people paying for them. Within 10 years every grocery store that it's a mom&pop will be using systems like the Amazon Stores, with no cashiers, and no check outs at all. Why bother improving your current system, when you can replace it entirely, and lay off 20% of the your workforce without loosing any profit margin? Kroger, and Wal-mart already have a few test stores around the country with a similar setup to the Amazon stores. It's only a matter of time.

I bought a receiver to make life 'easier'. Spent the next few days trying to figure out why on earth I wouldn't get my tv to show picture. Tried every trick in the book, tried different monitors (which worked), to then come to conclusion that the hdmi cable I was using only worked when connected directly to a tv and not (for some reason) through a receiver.

EDID Rules. If there were an EDID gui that didn't curate and limit what a user could select (basically the current process/settings menu) it would be a nightmare.... either allowing all combinations of variables, most of which would not work anywhere, or curate a list of all working edid combos such that your mission for, say, 1280x760p 75hz is convoluted by a multitude of factors and you have hundreds of variations to choose from in a dropdown or series of dropdowns. The way it is set up is definitely 1000 times easier, even if it means buying an external edid manager to avoid dumping and modifying edid source in hex for the oddest cases.
