While I agree with that, my 2 big gripes with this franchise now is how these factions, when compared to games like Medieval 2, Rome 1, or even Empire have less variety, the factions look more like re-skins of the same 5 factions. Then the unit variety really should be broken down to 3 units that just look the same and behave the same; unlike the older total wars where unit variety mattered. I loved how in Med 2 I could play as Byzantium and battle buddy my Varangian Guards with my cheaper spear units. Flanking charges by heavy pole arm infantry while pinning the opponents Cav was so satisfying. Your units had variety in play and uses. These were things I had to learn. The worst part is this franchise is now the same washed up F###ING MOBILE GAME. The gameplay looks just like that Total War Arena BS. I'll sooner send my $60 to modders that out strip anything CA has cared to produce in the last 13 years, than this scammy company. It's sad when a game like Manor Lords, made by a single developer for most of it and doesn't focus on combat has better battles than any total war since Shogun 2. F### YOU Creative Assembly for ruining Total War.

Minor correction: trade routes in Empire were extremely lucrative, as much as 6000-12000 per turn depending on what goods you had available, and having your capitol port blockaded could be ruinous for your economy fucking lmao that uphill charges (according to your testing) don't have a melee attack malus apparently, something even the most basic medieval wargame/tactical game is going to have, even the humble turn-based game Battle Brothers at 29:00 oh my god he did the "actually I think it looks pretty gud" line ffs really demonstrates how little people actually watch these content mill grift type videos considering it was so easy to just completely deconstruct everything said

To make an updated clone of Shogun 1 inside of a year would take something like ten people, using a lot of third-party tools for thinks like in-game sound and art. Double the number to include more artists for a fully 3D version. Edit: if we assume an average game dev salary is £30k a year, the budget for this can be between £300k-£600k. This is a huge bar to investors because the potential return isn't good, which is why normally companies spend these amounts on DLC for already-existing games instead. But one person, making 'Caveman Wars: Oog's Lucky Stone', featuring just three units, could take one talented individual just two years, most of it programming in-depth and highly-interactive game systems. It becomes more than the sum of it's parts. It would need just one battle map(prominently featuring the Lucky Stone) and no campaign map. I wish I was that one talented individual.

Wow thank you so much for this response. Ever since Rome 2 I've not been able to get into any of the titles I've tried. The UI issues you describe, the battle mechanics (specifically with the health bar), and the tying of units to generals/family members are just off to me. But until seeing this video I assumed I was just an old man yelling at clouds.

I think they let navel battles fall by the way-side, because, perhaps they felt the reception of the mechanic in the community was lack luster. I always felt that it was something that should be improved on, not forgotten about. CA has always struggled with improving upon existing mechanics. They seem to have a tendency to just abandon them, gradually over-time. I mean there is a whole list. Forts, watch-towers, navel battles, splitting up armies, general-less armies, effect of terrain on the battlefield, fully-customizable cities, dynamic population(this is the biggest one for me, because it gives you a HUGE sense of realism to your kingdom), a dynamic economy with developing trade-lanes as the game goes on, iconic well-written and voiced general speeches, cavalry that actually packs a punch, the realistic application and simulation of physics, a greater need to consider the formations of your troops and their capabilities, the natural way generals gain traits and ancillaries. Oh yeah and the biggest one of all. The game actually coming out full of all it's features and not being diced to hell into DLC. Which everyone has given up on talking about, because they've been so demoralized into accepting it.

Some of the fans have actually taken to forums in the past to praise CA for not implementing microtransactions into their games, completely oblivious to the greed of needing to spend on two whole games just to access the full con-tent in WH3. I think the only major reason that CA hasn't resorted to MTX is because that stuff is usually done in multiplayer games where players want to show off the crap they bought, and TW MP hasn't been worth talking about since Avatar Conquest.

It simply wouldn't work with the current game code, namely because of how the armour and armour piercing mechanics work. Trust me, both me and other modders are trying/have tried to make modern Total War feel more like classic Total War. It's basically an impossible battle to win.

Rome 2 sold well initially for a couple of reasons, one being that CA had regained a lot of goodwill with Shogun 2/ FotS, and the second being it was a sequel to well received Rome 1. There was a general feeling that ETW was a "one off bad game" and that we had moved past that. Rome 2's player activity is currently middling, the only people left playing it are in it for the mods and are the only ones left after the massive exodus following that game's launch, and I doubt that they would be able to push that many copies today if they just resold Rome 2 as Rome 3.

Medieval 2 was arguably the most mod able game outta the whole lot, and CA didn't wanna be beat by thise modders so insecurity caused them to make their future titles more and more unmodable. For example only recently did modders find a way to add in and change the region's on the map around to a degree for attila tw. The only thing they unlocked for free in wh3 was the 'immortal empires' main map. If you want to play as races not included in base game, you still need to purchase wh1 or 2, or the relevant dlc.

Unfortunately at this point CA have monopolized the content that we see from the top TW channels in many languages. It started with a few channels getting some DLC keys for ETW/NTW to now we have YT channels who had a working build of Pharaoh before the game was even officially announced. Well, I am the one who has known and played the Total War series since Shogun 1, no matter how many titles they release, I usually go back to Shogun 2, Medieval 2, or Rome 1 (forget that cursed bronze age Egypt) as the newer title is limiting, remove and re-release feature up and down there...I miss back in the day playing Stainless Steel mod for med 2 as Byzantine that beat rebel army occupied Constantinople at the start of the game with few forces by sheer amount of tactics there.

The new audience is Reddit/Steam discussions/CA forums of people using personal attacks. Reflects the age group right there. Look at the videos of the people insulting KZbinrs. They're mostly kids with squeaky voices making childish videos or uploading videos as such. Look at the thousands of players on steam. Now look at the thousands downloads of full cheats like god mode, infinite gold, infinite recruitment on steam workshop. Thousands!! of players playing god mode. From above you start to see the new audience demographics and then understand there is no point arguing against. With such an audience that continues to buy the new games, CA will keep making it, so then start to understand who to really blame. What made me actually laugh. Steam discussion is full of players complaining from first turn the AI is too aggressive and cannot win first few battles to survive. You know there is a diplomacy button and you could give away one settlement to buy peace treaty, even on Legendary. Zero enemies from first turn. Says it all about new audience if they can't figure that out. Your first enemy can be your ally, come on. They don't even understand how faction aversion works. From the beginning you're surrounded by potential allies anyway. Play it like USA where they get others to fight for them as proxy wars. They don't even know how to formulate solutions to basic problems or start to use cheat mods. That's the new audience.

One of my least favourite things about these new games, is that you don't select a nation anymore. You select a leader. You don't play as Troy, you play as Paris of Troy. It fucking sucks. Imagine playing Medieval 2 and instead of picking France, you pick Louis XVIIVIIVIVI the Inbred or whatever. It makes it so you're less invested in your faction - you don't follow it's story, you follow the story of it's leader.

I didn't know that TW had so much drama in its creator community, weird considering the low stakes. The nice thing about this series is that it has lasted long enough that even if it goes into the dumpster with bad releases, I can always fall back to my beloved classics of Medieval 2, Rome 2 (with DEI mod), and Attila, and I finally feel like Warhammer 3 is on the road to becoming a classic. At this point I can just dismiss any new TW game that isn't immediately interesting to me because seeing as I was introduced to the series on Shogun1/Medieval1, I'm not young anymore and don't have the time to split between 8 titles in the same franchise or play every new release that I'm supposed to be excited for but am not. So I can settle into playing the TW games I like and forget about the ones that I don't like, old or new. And I'm hardly unique; the Shadows of Change catastrophe showed that even CA is aware that their play base is aging and not really expanding, so I expect many other TW players besides myself will or have fallen adapted the same habit of playing the older titles that were actually good.

Speaking of framing though, your phrasing and tone throughout the video are quite mocking and self assured, which adds to the perception of it as drama. If a series has released 20 games over the years and half of them are bad, that means you have 10 great games that you can play basically forever. The series *has* moved on and improved in many ways - units are better at obeying orders and far more responsive, factions have more involved campaign mechanics than Shogun II and earlier, and overall the games are simpler and easier to play. I think the focus has been on making these games into marketing spectacles more than actually great games, with marketing focus more on pretty battles and "inventory checks" as you call them, a term I rather like, which comes to their benefit in many places but detrimental in others. Overall I think you sound much like one of those Star Wars fans whose shtick consists of making videos complaining about Disney ruining the IP, except replace "Star Wars" and "Disney" with "Total War" and "CA", respectively.

I've been playing total war games since rome 1 was released and I've played hundreds and even thousands of hours on every title so I'm pretty good source on letting people know if the game is good or not. Total war Pharoah has become one of my favorite titles now after the dynasties update. The fact that you can't handle that and that your still stuck on the only total war game you ever played wich is shogun 2 and it's massive expansion shows your obsessed with being a CA hater even when they turn it around and make it right. In my opinion warhammer 1+2+3 really got boring after some hundred hours. Played the third installment for 8 hours max. Rome 2 with mods is going near 1000 hours. Still go back to med 2 from time to time. I played Troy for 3 hours. I tried it in the beginning and after the big last update. Both times were ugly flashy and simply not fun for me. Pharoah came out and in my eyes was the same. Didnt even bother to play/ buy it. The dynasties update got my interest. I gave it a try. I like it. Now I played for arround 10 hours (with mods) and I really like that game. Maybe some of you are hate-blind or something. Its not perfect but it feels good.

when a good person does something bad, they get punished and then rewarded if they correct the behavior. When a sociopath does something bad, its expected and its a pattern. And the only way to help a sociopath is to intervene and get them long term treatment. Simply rewarding them for 'correcting their mistakes' is them being manipulative. CA and most companies are the equivalent of sociopaths- They will do and say anything they have to, to make a profit. Therefore, 'applauding them' does nothing except prolong any real changes, and brings you more under their manipulation and influence. This is why this has been going on since Rome 2. They keep apologizing and saying they will change, but never do...and now 10 years later we are in the same position...except this time people are fed up and arent buying their games. And instead of admitting the problem to work towards a fix, they are going to push harder towards lots of marketing to try and convince people of something they now see clearly and obviously as b.s. So odds are, they will continue doing this charade for a couple more years before going under. Hopefully I am wrong though.

I payed 14 Euros for Pharao on a keyseller two weeks ago and got the update for free. No idea why you say that people had to pay twice. Dynasties was a free update. Pharao post-update is fantastic and I am having more fun with it than I had with TW in a long time. I also had a good time with Troy. Too bad if you don't like it. Haters gonna hate. But kudos for calling out the KZbin clichés with that other dude (I know either his channel nor yours). You are guilty of a few ones yourself though ("I'm one of the few KZbinrs who plays the game they cover" come on!) If you had played it, you would know that cavalry can be very decisive and deadly in Dynasties If you said all these things to my face, I'm not sure if I'd have a beer with you (because I actually agree with a lot of what you say) or if I'd beat the crap out of you because you are so full of yourself. Your average TW tuber constantly jumps between promoting different games and mods for different games and the timeframe it's all done in leads one to ask how they could have possibly put any significant effort into actually playing the games, before we even consider the time needed to script and edit this stuff. The fact that the scripts are usually so surface level and vapid supports this claim. Also I don't have beer or any alcoholic drinks, it's poison, but either way I actually quite prefer casual bluntness in my conversations with my friends (my sense of humor is very dry).
