I guess the GPS module just spits out a NMEA data stream then... the satellite receivers and ephemeris calculations are all done at the antenna. Must have a pretty good operating temp rating! On that new glass, have not seen that many D-Sub connectors in a long time. Pretty cool that it's all DB9 serial communication. I am pretty impressed with the sheer simplicity of the Dynon product line. What I am more interested in is interference resistance... EG: That Alternator makes a ton of noise, what systems for mitigation of that? -- also RF, you have a radio / ads setup, what are the specs on that equipment for interference resilience? Go Glen! Loving this series! - ZM from Halton
@VeteranAviator3 жыл бұрын
I don’t know all the beeps and squeaks of the system. I can tell you that with the shielded and grounded (bonded) wiring there is no perceptible interference with this system. Mine is the first plane I’ve flown that you don’t hear the strobes in the comm system. The wiring is all high quality shielded wire with the exception of the EGT/CHT spades which should be replaced prior to install. They are known to have issues and I had 2 on my own.

I should have been more clear. I just did a very similar Dynon upgrade to my own plane.

Hi Glen. Curious what pieces are still needed to make it fully IFR compliant. Seems you have everything there. Cheers.
@GlensHangar3 жыл бұрын
I haven't done all the research yet, so I'm not completely sure - but it would at least need an IFR certified GPS unit. We'll go down that rabbit hole next fall.
@KENNEY10233 жыл бұрын
Should be interesting watching the install of the new equipment. Just curious as to what do you have to do in the plane to prepare for the new equipment? I can only think you would need to cut out tge aluminum panel that held the old equipment and get a new piece of aluminum and make holes in it as needed to fit all of the new equipment.
@GlensHangar3 жыл бұрын
Cutting the new panel is part of it; laying out where all of the pieces go in the panel is a huge deal. Also laying out where the components go 'behind the scenes', some will need to be in the tail / wings. Adding probes and wiring for a new engine management system that's part of the Dynon package will also take some time. And - since we've got it all apart... I'm replacing all of the electrical system / wiring / switches etc. Clean sheet install. So I have to pull new wire to all of the lights, etc.

Looking good! Why did you choose the tail for the magnetometer over a wing location? Just curious. Better access?
@GlensHangar3 жыл бұрын
Easier access and wire run - put it beside the ELT - also levelling and orienting it in the tail is far easier. If this was a homebuilt and the wing was open, it might be a completely different conversation?

Makes sense! I am a fan of having easier access. All the Garmin and other installs I've come across have been in the wing. Good to know that the tail is practical too!

One question Glen, does the GPS antennae have ADS-B and ADS-C downlink (data Cable) so you can get data for forefllight app or anything like that? Gonna be a sweet ride Glen. It amazes me as a airline pilot, how GA aircraft have way better avionics than we do on a 737 or DHC8.

my understanding is the GPS smart antenna from Dynon is passive - only reports NMEA data via serial to the panel so any reporting is done from a separate radio component

@GlensHangar2 жыл бұрын
The Dynon system is fully certified in Canada AND the United States. Definitely certified for the USA.
@GaryMCurran3 жыл бұрын
I look forward to seeing this when you're done with it. Dynon is probably the best value in glass cockpit right now. Okay, is this going to be a VFR only install or are you going to install an IFR-certified GPS Navigator/Com/Nav system with it? A used Garmin GNS-430 or 530 would go nicely with it. Also, autopilot? Were you going to install one of those with it? I really look forward to seeing this when it's done.
@GlensHangar3 жыл бұрын
Initially we’re doing a VFR only panel, with a wiring harness for a future IFR upgrade (when the budget recovers). Autopilot is a maybe way down the line as we figure out what’s certified for this aircraft, but because it’s so old the chances are slim.

as someone who's knowledge of avionics consists of this and your other videos, salt this comment to taste. It seems odd to use LiPo as back up batteries, even if they're not power cycling often, I wouldn't have thought their life expectancy would be suitable for aircrafts. I would've expected something like LiFePO4 cells. I'm gonna have to look into this more
@FowlerAskew3 жыл бұрын
So I got curious and found a forum thread where someone took one of the packs apart. They aren't actually LiPos, they're regular lithium ion 18650s. Not quite as safe as LiFePO4, but still a lot less volatile than your average LiPo. The packs also have a built in BMS to keep them in line
