I did it! Nancy, you said I could, and I did! I have been crocheting for about ten years and during Covid, I decided to to learn to knit. After many tries, I gave up, but a few weeks ago, I thought I would try just one more time. I found this video and it inspired me, especially because you said YOU CAN DO THIS! I went to my LYS and found some beautiful, speckled wool yarn in the half-price bin and picked up my needles and jumped in. I didn't understand at the beginning where we were going with the stitches--it sure didn't LOOK like a triangle! But after ripping it out several times, I decided to keep going, despite mistakes. Guess what? I finished my shawl! I wet-blocked it, and have worn it several times this week. I love it and have received many compliments on it. I am working on a second shawl using Knit Picks Wool of the Andes in a lovely purple color and plan to make the corner-to-corner baby blanket I saw on your channel next. THANK YOU, Nancy, for your encouragement and believing in us!

Just a tip if some people still get confused about if they're on a row with increases or not, I personally use two stitch markers of two different colors. I personally like green on the knit row (as in "Go, it's safe to just go and not think," lol). This way, when you get close to the center stitch, you come up on your green marker and can just knit right on through, without finding the beginning of the row (sometimes hard, especially late in the project, when the stitches are bunched up). If you come across the other color, the caution color, you know, "Hey, take it slow, you're increasing. Did you increase before the center stitch? Double check!" And then of course at the end of the row, you know it'll be a "Go," row when you turn it, which lets you know that THIS row you're still knitting is an increase row. I've made shawls for my future mother-in-law and my future grandmother-in-law. I'm working on another for the future grandmother-in-law on the other side of the family, another one for my future-mother-in-law, and one for a friend. I love this pattern!!! It is a little difficult at the beginning; half the time I have to start over because I miss something. But once I make it to about row 12, I'm good to go and can just FLY with it. I personally prefer having three stitches along the top at the border, or even four if it's a small gauge yarn, and I slip the first stitch to make a selvedge edge, which feels neater, but this is my go-to by FAR. I really appreciate the tutorial; I still watch it every time I set up, just to get through those harrowing first 12 rows.

I've used this pattern to make two shawls now. I tried a different pattern first, a bottom up pattern, but I messed up terribly because I didn't realize I needed to stop at a certain point, make two more of what I'd already made, and stitch them together. This pattern was much easier and I even like the look better. While it can be frustrating to take over half an hour to knit ONE ROW (something my family and friends -none of whom knt- cannot believe), the simplicity makes it doable and bearable. I'm currently making a shawl from the Mantra colorway in the Lion Brand Mandala Ombre collection for my future mother-in-law as a present for helping me recover from surgery (she's a nurse, and was able to spare me my doctor father needing to be all up in my business), and after that I'm lining up one for my future grandmother-in-law, who very much feels the cold. I was able to work up to 250 stitches per row within a week, and did about 1/5 of that while actually visiting my FMIL, so she could see the process and progress. The yarn I picked matches the decor of her new condo perfectly! 😊 I'm also teaching her to knit, so showing her how to increase was fun. She was very anxious about it, and when she saw how simple it was, she couldn't believe it! One little tip for anyone who doesn't like having to find the beginning of the row to remember if its an increase row or not (I start forgetting, when each row takes so long), is that I use one teal and one pink needle tip protector, matching the two stitch marker colors I use. I'll put the pink tip protector closer to me on increase rows (as those rows have the pink stitch marker after a few stitches), blue for rows that I knit through. At a glance it reminds me, "hey, yeah, this IS an increase row," without me having to fumble around and unbunch the shawl and find the end I've already worked. It's a small thing, but I like it. If I was using normal needles, I'd just have a hair thing wrapped around the very far end of one needle and know that if I'm working with that needle, it's an increase row, but I had to switch it up for circulars! Thanks for the awesome video. I'm hoping to branch out to other patterns at some point, but I really enjoy this pattern and think I'll stick with it until after Christmas. Then it'll be time for three baby blankets before I can return to shawls! Stay wonderful!

@nobleknits
@nobleknits 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Stephanie, I'm so glad the video helped you with increasing! The pattern will naturally form into a triangle shawl. When I had about 5 yards of yarn left on my skein, I decided to bind off. You want to make sure you have enough yarn to bind off that very long row! Also, my shawl measured 22" at the center measuring from the center top down to the point. 😀

Does knitting the yarn over increas the stitches? Xx
@nobleknits
@nobleknits 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Katherine, Knitting the increase does not increase the stitches. It's the yarn over itself that creates the increase. So on the yarn over rows, you'll have 4 increases. On the next row, you won't have any increases.

@nobleknits
@nobleknits 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Shirley, I think you'll be fine on the 29" needle. When you get towards the end, you'll have A LOT of stitches on the needle. If you put stitch stoppers on the ends of the needle when not in use, you won't have to worry about stitches falling off. If you don't have stitch stoppers, you can use wine corks, rubber bands, or stick the points into the skein of yarn. 😀

Hi Patricia, When this shawl starts to get really long, I recommend knitting it onto a circular needle (the ones with the string). You'll knit on it exactly the same way as you would with the straight needles you are currently using. It just allows you to hold A LOT more stitches and knit comfortably. @nobleknits
@nobleknits 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Cassie, 40" needles are my favorite length for shawl knitting. It takes a lot of knitting on this shawl before you need anything longer than a 40" needle. The cable of the circular needle allows you to hold a lot more stitches than you would think. When I set down my knitting, I make sure to push all of the stitches back onto the cable so that no stitches slide off. 😀

Thank you very much. I have just found out, I did something wrong, and so it is nice to see, how it shall be made. I want to find the same yarn in Denmark. I couldn't find the yarn in Denmark - here is a warning, if you order this yarn in USA you will have to pay a fee of 198 DKK which far exceeds the value of the yarn. Take this into consideration. Sorry USA this is not your fault, its just danish regulations, made for stopping trade with WISH in China. I still look forward to receiving this yarn after all.

After a bit of frustration and almost giving up, I too realized the third row written instructions were incorrect but after watching the video a few times, I was able to figure out the correct knitting pattern. For row 3. Great pattern and great tutorial! Thanks for posting this shawl video!

So, since the pattern states to end on row 3 (before bind off) does that mean we complete the row 3 again and then bind off using the stitches including the YO?
@nobleknits
@nobleknits 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Misty, Great question. No, don't do row 3 again. As you're working the pattern in order, end your project on row 3 and then bind off.

I'm looking to make a triangle shawl inspired by the one Claire wears on Outlander. If you happen to know that shawl, would you say that it is larger than this triangle? I'm thinking I will use a solid color (the one in the show is brown) and will use more than one skein if necessary, to achieve the effect. Thoughts? ( If you know the show. )😁
@nobleknits
@nobleknits 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Michelle, I'm also an Outlander fan! All of the knitted garments on the show are so enticing. This shawl is about the same size as the on the shows although you can easily knit it larger or smaller to fit your needs. 😀

I am making the triangle shawl in this video. I am an experienced knitter, but still have questions. I am using the #5 40inch circular needle. I have 260 stitches on the needle already, and still have more yarn to knit. Did you find it difficult when you made your shawl with 313 stitches total?

How can any circular needle hold all the stitches?
@nobleknits
@nobleknits 3 жыл бұрын
Hi John, I use a 40" circular needle and it is plenty of room to hold all the stitches. The stitches smoosh together on the cable and hold the stitches really well. If you are worried about the stitches falling off the needle when not in use, you can use stitch stoppers. However, I find when I'm not knitting, if I just slide all of the stitches onto the cable and away from the needle tips, I don't lose or drop any stitches. 😀

I don't understand how your top edge came out flat? I followed a tutorial from Nimble Needles to make a shawl just like this one, but the top edge still comes to a slight point and folds over when I put it on.

So..I’m trying this pattern but row 3 is not coming out right. I’ve tried numerous times I keep coming up one stitch short. It seems like there isn’t enough stitches to do the last two sets of K2. You have 7 stitches for row 2 but then in row 3 it has you knitting a total of 8 stitches. What am I missing? Thank you.

It’s been resolved with the help of my FB knitting group. When you say K2 marker, it means knit to marker, not knit TWO.

I am a technophobe! I tried to download your free pattern and a message came up saying I have to pay £29.90 a month! I've emailed them hoping they can sort it! I only wanted to know the size of needles required and how many stitches were left on before casting off. Oh dear. I shouldn't be let loose with technology x

Hi Virginia, I know you can do this! If you are fairly new to knitting, you might want to try this diagonal shawl first: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gIKQgqSMgdppsJI After that, come back and give this triangle shawl a try. Here are some tips. The first few rows are a little annoying until you start to see the pattern emerge. You will be knitting the entire shawl with the exception of the yarn overs which create the increases. Be sure to use stitch markers that are close in size to the needle. That way, your yarn overs won't get tangled in with the stitch markers. Also, use a contrasting colored stitch marker at the beginning of the increase row. Let me how you are progressing - I'm here to help! 😀

I wanted to thank you for showing me how to make my first shawl. Could you please help me about how much yarn would use to make it using fingering yarn. I think that’s what it’s called it’s a #3 yarn.
@nobleknits
@nobleknits 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Louisa, Congratulations on your first shawl! Here's a little bit more info on yarn weights. A #3 yarn is called a DK weight yarn while a fingering weight yarn is much thinner and known as a #1. Here's an approximation for how much yarn you'll need: #1 Fingering: 700 yards and #3 DK: 500 yards. I have a handy Yarn Weights Comparision Chart that you can print and keep in your knitting bag: blog.nobleknits.com/yarn-weights-comparison-chart In addition, you may enjoy my Yarn Bootcamp Course. It explains all of that and much more about selecting the right yarns for your knitting: www.nobleknitsu.com/courses/yarn-bootcamp

This video is great, thank you! I got a cake of Mandala yarn for Christmas and I was looking for a 1 skein project for it that wasn’t just the same old scarf I always make (I’m a newer knitter). Found a similar pattern on the Lion Brand website but was confused by it. This video helped tremendously! However, how does the yarn stripe so consistently? I’m actually really confused by this but I’ve seen multiple pictures of nicely striped projects from these Mandala yarns.

Hi Sara, I'm so glad you found this video and it was helpful to you! I agree with you, Mandala is a beautiful self-striping yarn. You just knit away and it does all the colorwork for you. Enjoy! 😀
