Thank you for speaking about this! As a new mom myself I am so glad that there are people like you checking in on new families and paving the way for us to normalize home care again. As a new mom especially post C-section I was SO thankful for this and to not add the extra stressor of going out with my newborn.

This talk was SO eye-opening for me! The fact that maternal mortality in the US is SO much higher than any other industrialized nation, that 78% of those deaths are after birth in the 4th trimester, AND that 4 out of 5 of these deaths are preventable... OMG! Blew me away! I also loved how you illustrated how much this issue impacts the socio-economic well-being of our entire nation. Such important work you are doing! Thank you for shedding light on this topic!

An important topic explained and explored in incredible detail with data, examples and personal stories to lend it authenticity. Loved it and thank you for bringing this conversation to the forefront. Every pregnancy, postpartum or 4th trimester needs more conversation and moms need to be seen for all that they go through. So many of us go through these difficulties and PPD silently sometimes inspite of the amazing support system we have. Congratulations and wishing this movement gains momentum!👏 👏

Dr. Sonal Patel does an excellent job of highlighting the often-overlooked costs and challenges faced by families during this important time. As a psychologist, I appreciate the focus on the importance of supporting new mothers and families in their transition to parenthood. This support can have a significant impact on maternal mental health and well-being, which is essential for healthy family dynamics. Great job on bringing attention to this important issue, and for delivering a clear and impactful message."

A few years ago, I was watching the film "Eastern Promises." It is film about a Russian organized crime in London and the interaction one mobster has with a midwife. Watching film I saw professions in the British NHS that don't exist in the US. Dulas and midwives. The NHS has nurses, OB/GYNs, midwives, and dulas. The American medical system has nurses and OB/GYNs. Midwives and dulas clearly service purposes in the birthing process around the world. Both before the birth and after the birth. But somewhere in American history, these professions disappeared. In my opinion, women are suffering for it, new born babies are suffering for it, their families are suffering for it. Why did they go away? How do we bring them back?

Dr. Sonal Patel’s TEDxOcala talk presents an insightful claim for the need to extend maternity leave to include the first three months after birth. Dr. Patel’s major points are that this is a crucial time for mothers to recover, establish breastfeeding, and bond with the infant, which all hold long-term benefits for both mother and baby. Dr. Patel notes that many countries, including the U.S., do not provide adequate support for new mothers during this time and this causes significant negative economic and social impacts. Although Dr. Patel’s argument is persuasive, I feel there are important counterpoints to be considered. One concern is the potential cost that comes with extending maternity leave. Employers will likely be hesitant to offer paid leave for an additional three months due to becoming a potential financial burden. It also may be difficult for small businesses to extend the longer leave due to having fewer employees. However, although I do not yet have the answer to these, I feel there are creative ways these barriers could be overcome so that Dr. Patel’s recommended extended leave could be granted. Another argument to be considered is that extending maternity leave may not be desired by all mothers. While some mothers may need more recovery time, others may feel ready to return to work sooner. Or some mothers may want to take their leave intermittently rather than in one large chunk depending on home circumstances and childcare. It is possible that flexible maternity leave could be considered for the future work force. One the flip-side benefits have been proven to exist when granting an extended maternity leave. Studies have shown that provided paid maternity leave can increase employee satisfaction and improve employee retention, reduce turnover costs, and increase productivity. I do not know the definite financial gain, but is it possible that this could out-weight the economic burden of concern further down the line? For example, in Sweden, mothers are more likely to return to work and have higher earnings long-term, suggesting that extended maternity leave could be an investment. One could argue that by denying an extended maternity leave, mothers are being denied the ethical principle of non-maleficence. This principle states that we should not cause harm or inflict unnecessary suffering on others. Denying mothers adequate time to recover after childbirth and bonding time with their newborn could put both individuals’ health and well-being at risk. In conclusion, it is important to consider alternative approaches to supporting new mothers during the postpartum period. Employers could potentially offer mothers of maternity leave alternative approaches. For example, employers could offer more flexible use of leave or work arrangements, such as telecommunication or reduced hours, to help new mothers find a happy balance.
