In 1821, there were no welding helmets. Arc welding had been theorized as early as 1802, but the first arc welding equipment was invented in the 1880's. Oxyfuel welding is even younger; the oxy-acetylene welding process was invented in 1900. The only welding process used in in 1821 would have been forge welding, a blacksmithing technique, and blacksmiths seldom wore face or eye protection. It is possible such a mask would have existed for working a blast furnace for smelting metal, to protect the worker from extreme heat, but I can't find any evidence of that.

I really love the text parser input that this game uses. Instead of just clicking on things because they're there, you have to think "What do I want to do with this?". It adds an extra layer of thought and immersion, even when the actions are obvious. Parsers can cause issues where the player doesn't phrase their action the same way as was intended, but still, I wish there were more games of this style

I somehow don't think Yahtzee was thinking of this when he wrote it... but funny enough for the dates: June 28 is the day Franz Ferdinand was assassinated, while July 28 was the declaration of war by Austria-Hungary on Serbia, the official start of WW1, which would define the political and military climate for most of the world through this day. So yeah, significant dates.

Welding can trace its historic development back to ancient times. The earliest examples come from the Bronze Age. Small gold circular boxes were made by pressure welding lap joints together. It is estimated that these boxes were made more than 2000 years ago. During the Iron Age the Egyptians and people in the eastern Mediterranean area learned to weld pieces of iron together. Many tools were found which were made approximately 1000 B.C. During the Middle Ages, the art of blacksmithing was developed and many items of iron were produced which were welded by hammering. It was not until the 19th century that welding, as we know it today was invented.

Until the end of the 19th century, they technically had forge welding, which blacksmiths used to join iron and steel by heating and hammering. Arc welding and oxyfuel welding were among the first processes to develop late in the century, and electric resistance welding followed soon after. Welding technology advanced quickly during the early 20th century as the world wars drove the demand for reliable and inexpensive joining methods. Following the wars, several modern welding techniques were developed, including manual methods like SMAW, now one of the most popular welding methods, as well as semi-automatic and automatic processes such as GMAW, SAW, FCAW and ESW. Developments continued with the invention of laser beam welding, electron beam welding, magnetic pulse welding (MPW), and friction stir welding in the latter half of the century. Today, the science continues to advance. Robot welding is commonplace in industrial settings, and researchers continue to develop new welding methods and gain a greater understanding of weld quality.

Late to the party, I know, but welding was first invented sometime in the latter part of the bronze age. Originally, "forge welding" was used on highly malleable metals like copper, bronze, and gold. Eventually the same process would be applied to all significant crafting metals including iron and steel. The kind of mask portrayed, however, is a basic, earlier kind of mask used in arc welding, which is what we just call regular old welding these days. They wouldn't have existed in the 1800s, but neither would black magic or hauntings so I think it's safe to assume that Trilby's world is not *this* world.

35:20 - Arc welding wasn't around until the 20th century (around world war 1). Other types of welding (basically, with a hammer, or with hot filler), have existed for millenia. - From wiki You can easily just assume it's a blacksmith's apron, for when they're pounding hot metal straight from the furnace (could make embers). Welding masks? Nope. :P

0:53 Wait, Yahtzee added the drawing of the idol in Photoshop? Why not just draw it on the paper before taking the picture?

Probably because he is more confident with drawing with the mouse than by hand.

@@Arkygator Hmm, good point. It also occurs to me that an actual drawing might be hard to see in the wrong lighting.

@@Sayrden Yeah, especially if he wouldn't maybe have a good camera in 2006, or whenever he made this game. Now you can just get a pretty sweet camera with a budget phone.

Little fun fact: The guy that made Slender man was inspired by almost every tall thin monster that wears a suit in fiction, EXCEPT good ol Princey boy here. So that's something I guess.

Terrance Railby is actually a fine alias. The rule is: Keep your first name, and the first letter of your surname

I think it added to the atmosphere to recount things after they happened in the notes, Trilby is writing a report on what happened at Clanbronwyn, in excruciating detail; because that's what he's supposed to do. I assume that this was Yahtzee's thought at the time.

Hey, Yahtzee: from the multiple mentions of a King, it begs the question, have you ever read Robert W. Chambers' The King in Yellow? It was one of a few texts that inspired Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos. It's fairly short, and an interesting look at the genesis of a few delightfully creepy little ideas.

I'm not sure if it's coincidental, planned, or a subconscious thing, but the Tall Man's design is incredibly similar to the zealot from Blood 2: The Chosen.

It's funny that Yahtzee talked about doing lots of research about clothes in the past eras, but not if welding existed during the Dafoe's era.

The counter-point to text parser games, particularly in your inability to brute force puzzles, is that the issue with getting stuck. If you don't work out the precise wording the dev wants you to use, you're fucked. this is even worse on badly thought out puzzles, where you have to find the exact wording needed to do somthing, when otherwise you just had to click the thing on the thing.
