This movie is proof that Sony (and multiple other studios) learned the exact wrong lessons from the success of The LEGO Movie. They saw it was popular, but they didn't (and still don't) know why.

They're probably not going to learn anyway. Things like this happen because the logic behind why these sorts of cash grabs happen ("It's a recognizable and popular brand!") is logic Hollywood investors and executives more interested in opening weekend revenues than in long term marketability readily accept in pitch meetings, with the added benefit that it's a kind of logic that is the least threatening to the job security of people who make these pitches, and a lot of other people involved in the project ("Gee I don't really know why it bombed, all our marketing research showed this property is very popular with this target demographic"). And also, even if they could understand exactly why something like this would flop in hindsight, there is a good chance they probably wouldn't care.

I don't understand why anyone would ever think this was a good idea in the first place. If they thought about for five seconds they'd realize that was a shitty idea. Unlike the Lego Movie, you don't really have all that much freedom with the story or characters. You can build anything from Legos but emojis are limited. They're in a phone and have only one thing defining them. It just seems pointless.

The combination of mass advertisement, the general public, and people watching it ironically is something I think is really wrong with the film industry. Big name producers like Sony know that even if a movie is terrible, it'll probably be a financial success if they just market it right, so they end up being rewarded for bad behavior and laziness, which in turn encourages doing it more. Thanks for going and seeing this movie so we didn't have to!

I really wish people would stop watching this movie ironically. I'm not even seeing it myself, since I've already seen Wreck it Ralph, Inside Out, and The Lego Movie. (Which were all actually good movies, as well.) Since this movie is likely a cash grab aimed at normies, if it makes money, whether for good or bad reasons, we're probably gonna see a sequel, along with other movies that are basically spin-offs of the same concept. And things can only get worse from there.

It's sad that Sony Pictures Animation is gonna get so much undeserved hate for this. Don't get me wrong, I think this movie is a pile of garbage, even though I haven't seen it yet (probs will Netflix it). But this whole thing is not the studio's fault IMO. I can definitely see that they honest to God tried to make it as fun and creative as possible, despite the bad concept and script they were forced to work with because of the executives. This movie definitely won't stop me on liking and rooting SPA. There's a crapton of talent there, and they have such a unique, cartoony visual style. The creative force is definitely there. I personally love Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and Hotel Transylvania for their humor and visual style. I also think Smurfs: The Lost Village was a good film, and disagreed with the critics. Plus, they have many creative projects on the pipeline, like Vivo, made with Lin-Manuel Miranda, an untitled film directed by Kubo and the Two Strings' Shannon Tindle, and I'm confident about the Spider-Man Animated Film, since that one's written by Lord/Miller. And yeah, there are far worse studios out there, even in the mainstream. So yeah, don't hate the studio for this film, hate the execs!

Same thing, I watched both and the difference on quality is huge I rated Norm of the North 4.7/10 While Emoji Movie is a the very bottom of a list with 170+ movies with 1.9/10. Just to get an idea, I HATED movies I rated below 4/10. That's the limit and the Emoji Movie went the extra mile.

I don't like how some things in the movie make no sense: 1. You can't delete internet trolls, they are annoying online users of app not apps nor games. 2. You can't delete 99% percent of your phone and cancel the deleting and then magically get all of it back. 3. How come the anti-virus bots don't constantly chill at the picarcy app since there are so many viruses and spam. 4. How come the Poop Emoji doesn't make poop stains everywhere 5.
