I never knew this existed! Those colors are so incredible. What's incredible is so many of the set pieces in the original trilogy were paintings that the actors stood behind or in front of.

@@DK-421 yesss the hand painted backgrounds are one of the reasons why the OG trilogy is my favorite!! it feels so magical BECAUSE of all of the practical effects & handmade props!!!!!
@DK-42110 күн бұрын
@emilytano yes! Practical effects add SO much depth! It's cool what you can do with blue/green screens, but the original trilogy feels REAL.

I've seen these throughout the years in vaious media, but when I found out this portfolio existed, I've always wanted one. A friend of mine has prints signed by McQuarrie himself...I'm jealous! I will someday get my hands on a copy of the portfolio. I'm also a fan of Doug Chiang and I guess concept art of Star Wars in general. Congrats and thanks for sharing as you did! Much appreciation. 🙏👍

YESS CONCEPT ART IS THE COOLEST!!! getting to see how the original designs evolved & seeing what was used vs. scrapped is amazing!! doug chiang is a literal mastermind too, i happened to thrift an art book encyclopedia for star wars which included two prints of his!! they’re some of the most stunning artwork i have EVER seen!!! also… ebay has SO MANY ART PORTFOLIOS, i totally recommend searching on there!!!!!

Very cool that you've discovered this! I own this set myself, plus the ones from episodes IV and VI iirc (hafta check the boxes from my recent move) :-) So yeah, McQuarrie was a genius.

This is really cool to look at, Ralph McQuarries art is some of the only art that really catches my eye outside of the stuff Alex Ross does for marvel/DC thanks for posting.
@emilytano7 күн бұрын
yess of course!!! i just looked up alex ross and WOW. thank YOU for mentioning his artwork because i’m about to fall down a rabbit hole of youtube videos about any and every piece of art he worked on 😂 his flash drawings are amazing!!!
@Gandalfthegoldenbird7 күн бұрын
@@emilytano yeah ross's art is super awesome - to the point where it lowkey ruined a lot of other comic book art styles for me so be careful falling down the rabbit hole 😂 although i do recommend checking out the justice society stuff he did that and kingdom come are his best work imho.

Thanks for recording this, I had no idea these large prints existed! I only have the postcards set and the micro-book. I really appreciate that you also read the descriptions, as some of that lore I’ve never heard before and might be exclusive to this set, as many details were changed between the concept art and the final film. ESB is my favorite film of all time, looking forward to seeing the ROTJ video!

YAYY i’m so glad you liked this!!! i also had no idea that the paintings came with descriptions!! i had seen a couple of these floating around online, but of course, no descriptions were tied to them!! 😂😂 and yesss i truly lucked out with finding the FULL ROTJ portfolio on ebay!! it’s truly stunning & i can’t wait to share it!!!!

@@emilytano Was there one made for A New Hope? The SW art he made for various projects outside of the OT are equally exciting, and most of it is included in the mini-book.
@emilytano8 күн бұрын
@ yesss there’s the “Star Wars Portfolio by Ralph McQuarrie” published in december of 1977!! i’ve seen a TON of them on ebay, and they all seem to be in pretty good condition!! (now i’m tempted to get that mini-book LOL!!)
@BenjaminWhitley8 күн бұрын
@ I highly, highly recommend getting the Mini Book, it’s only 10 bucks and is a fantastic reference book for tracking down all the McQuarrie SW art, as it has almost all of it. In the 90’s he did two pop-up books and a series of micro-machines box art that are some of his rarest and hardest to track down SW art, but perhaps the most exciting and interesting, especially the original pieces not seen in any of the films. They really spark the imagination.

@emilytano Yes, I love scifi art books, don't think I'll be as lucky as you, but I'll keep a look out for any star wars art. I know it's not star wars but if you like sci-fi art I highly recommend the art of Chriss Foss and John Harris.
