There's a lot to be said about travelling in a modern, reliable vehicle. They all need preventative maintenance, especially the European vans. A 4WD will get you further off the beaten track but if it's not reliable it could get you into more trouble in remote locations. Wish you guys all the best on the next adventure but just remember preventative maintenance, preventative maintenance, preventative maintenance and don't skimp on cheaper filters, oil and keep up the servicing.
@KendallandGlenn2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the input :) We take pride in preventative maintenance and have quite literally replaced almost everything we mechanically can (other than a full rebuild). But sometimes these things just happen and while it is unfortunate there's sadly not much else we could have done. The same action has been taken on our future vehicle as well, already having it completely looked over and improved over the coming months. Thanks for following along :)

Thanks guys! Such a bittersweet time! Oh man, what a rig that would be. It’s not that but something close 😏

Sadly most mechanics run away when they here the words volkswagen and aircooled. My old boss would run to the back of the workshop, stick his fingers in his ears and start "LaLaLaLaLaing" at the sound of one. I have several and they are as easy to work on if not easier than most watercooled and modern motors. I'll assume you've checked the tappets. If they are tight you'll have valves slightly open, no compression and Vance won't go. Anyone who tells you Type 3 aircooled are unreliable hasn't seen the many that are on their 3rd and 4th trip round the clock. Watching with interest to see what you guys have got. Most of all love what you guys do and send best wishes from here in SA. Hope to see you on the road somewhere. Big puppy cuddles for Leo.

hahaha that certainly seems to be a common problem that's for sure! They really are reliable and simple engines and am so excited to see how many more kms can be done on him with a reco'd engine! He's still go so much life left in him. And thanks Terry that really means a lot to us!

Sorry to hear about vance ,even though you did a compression test it is possible it is worn out valves due to unleaded fuel use . As their are different things to do in a compression test to verify this A bleed down would have been the best option .Shame the mechanics up their wouldnt do it .I am a mechanic of fifty years and wish i was in Exmouth would have been glad to assist .Being in Geraldton its just a bit far to help you out .Good luck in your next adventure
@KendallandGlenn2 жыл бұрын
Thanks David! What we would have given to have you up here! haha. Sadly I still think a rebuild was imminent but would have been great to have some real guidance on the matter :)
@davidthornborough33952 жыл бұрын
@@KendallandGlenn hey the repairs on vance are not expensive if if is just valves, it is unfortunate that you are not able to get it back to Geraldton as i would have done it for parts only charge just to hear about your adventures. Plus you might learn something. Stay safe and hope it all works out

Hi guys, I'm a new subscriber and i think i have fallen in love with you two! I'm sick of watching american and canadian roadtripping vids... i didn't know there were equally good creators like yourselves, doing it here in australia! I have binge watched your entire journey (so far) over the last week. In duality, mind you. Watching from oldest to newest one day and newest to oldest the next. I spent my twenties travelling Australia, solo, with just a backpack. Now i am in my fifties and all i want to do is retire and live in my mini camper aka The Roadtrip Machine... Guess the 4WD? I picture you very clearly in a raised roof troopy! Stay safe and happy x

G'day guys. I have to ask. Why invest money into Vance when you can buy another vehicle and put the money into that. A rebuild will cost you around $3 -5 k. And if you only do what is necessary to get going. It's a common fact that if the top end has been rebuilt. It puts extra preasure on the bottom end. And that's only the start. So be careful about your choices. This is the make or break. As far as the new vehicle is concerned. A delica is a great choice but again b4 buying get an inspection and a compression test. As long as it mechanically sound it's a good thing. The bling will come later. Things have a way of working out. Don't stress. We love 💖 💚 guys.
@KendallandGlenn2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Davi. It's been a massive thought however we are getting an entire engine rebuild with a donor bottom end so thankfully isn't too much of a worry. Plus selling a non runner would have to be sold wayyyyyy too cheap, as opposed to selling it with a new rebuilt engine and it means the legacy of Vance can continue. And yes we already have another vehicle purchased, no it's not new, but it's all part of the fun! We personally don't much like the delica for a number of reasons, the main one being that it has a habit of overheating as well as a poor amount of space and isn't exactly our type of vehicle. haha. We really appreciate your input and it's a no brainer for us that we do it the way we are. Thanks so much for following along :)

Leo is like "You shouldn't have to sell the dog to raise money! I could be a movie star!" On the rebuild, yep, been there, done that. Those engines just don't last as long as one would wish. And I bet it wasn't just the hose leak that caused it. 150K miles at best on these things. On the new vehicle, I hope you are getting a Toyota Land Cruiser. There is another traveler with a great one that she kitted out. kzbin.info Seems like a good choice for a 4x4 for the back country of Australia.

Omg your generation… can I suggest if you get chest pain don’t go to a Facebook group and your mate Doug?
@KendallandGlenn2 жыл бұрын
Excuse us? It’s not some random Facebook page, it’s a community of people who own these vans and know them inside and out. Our ‘mate’ Doug is a mechanic who specifically works on these types of vans. So no, it’s not ‘our generation’…it’s called being resourceful.
