The English Beat (a.k.a. The Beat) perform "Ranking Full Stop" live at the US Music Festival in San Bernardino in 1983. "Ranking Full Stop" is featured as the eighth track on the CD reissue of their 1980 album "I Just Can't Stop". The English Beat was one of two bands that played the US Festival both years (1982 &1983) the other band being Oingo Boingo.
The English Beat are a 2 Tone ska revival band founded in Birmingham, England in 1978. Their songs fuse ska, pop, soul, reggae and punk rock, and their lyrics deal with themes of love, unity and sociopolitical topics.

Saw these cats in about '80 or so, opening for the pretenders. I had never heard of them. They completely smoked the place. You have to give the Pretenders credit for walking on stage after these guys. Everybody came out a huge fan.

The late 70's/early 80's Ska music movement was great. Multiculturalism was the key, it was just about the wonderful music. There were people who identified as 'Skinheads' but they were totally non-violent and enjoyed the mix of people. Was a wonderful time to be alive.

Precisely, original Skinheads were just an English Punk subculture popular among steel yard workers (hence the short hair and popularity of overalls and Doc Martens), it wasn't until the mid to late 80's that you see German and other West European Neo-Nazi groups start adopting the aesthetic. Shortly followed by North American counterparts

Unfortunately there were also violent skinheads in the late 1970s/early 1980s (some of whom were racist and some weren't), including among those who claimed to be fans of ska music.

​@@williammurphy1796 The original skinheads actually pre-dated punk. They emerged in the UK around 1967/68 as an offshoot of mods. They continued the mod tradition of sharp dressing and love of Jamaican ska music (and its later offshoots rocksteady and reggae). But even those skinheads were by no means peaceful. They were a "rough and tough" youth subculture. Skinhead "crews" (gangs) would fight each other and attack greasers and hippies. They also tended to be _selectively_ racist, i.e. racist towards South Asians (Pakistanis and Indians) but not towards black people. They weren't affiliated to the far right like some later skinheads were, but they weren't angels either!

R.I.P Ranking Roger. Was in the front row of General Public concert at the Palace, in Hollywood for their first show. Got there 4 hours early and got to hear the sound check. Had to have my dad pick me up because I was underage to have a car. My first concert ever. Huge English Beat fan. I'm in the "Tenderness" video in the crowd shot. Motley Crue was on the poster outside, nobody ever heard of them at the time.

I saw them open for The Clash at San Francisco in ‘82. They had just replaced Saxa, who didn’t like touring. Great show! Ranking Roger won the crowd over. Dave Wakeling continues with the band name here in CA. They played a show recently in Petaluma.
