This was not composed for cinema. There was no cinema when this song came about. It is an ancient Hungarian folk song. It survived because an ethnographer travelled in search of intangible heritage and picked this up somewhere in Hungary in the 1960s.

The singer is hungarian, her name is Sebestyén Márta. She sings and collects folks songs. This song is from a little village called Magyarszovát which is located in Romania. But a huge part of Romania used to be Hungary this village also used to be hungarian. See the name Magyarszovát (magyar=hungarian). So this is a hungarian folksong, in hungarian language from Márta who is a real hungarian treasure.

It caused me to travel the deserts across Egypt and close to the Libyan desert just to see the Gilf Kebir...and led me to many more adventures in the desert. Amazing movie. I was only around 15-16 yrs old when I saw it. While I was analysing and enjoying the whole movie, my peers were too busy watching tv shows like Jerry Springer.

This is beyond beautiful, I've no words to describe it... "Love, love, you wretched agony, why didn't you bloom on top of every tree? On top of every tree, on a leaf of a chestnut tree, so that every girl and boy could have picked thee? For I picked once, but let it slip away,I picked once and let is slip away. I would pick again if I found a good one,a good and nice one,if I found my past love. What wouldn't I do for my past love? I’d spoon the water from the sea, I’d pick the pearls from down beneath to bind a pearl wreath my past love, for thee."
