I appreciate your approach to this subject as a flames fan I enjoyed the 10-15 year oiler rebuild and can’t be mad about that. The rest of you goons here in the comments remember when the flames are good again, mcdavid and Leon will be old or gone from the team.

Look, eventually they'll have a new arena. Hopefully it's decent or better. Having Calgary be competitive pushes Edmonton to remain competitive. Lets see what we can see but candidly I don't wish the Decade of Darkness on ANY team. That was a rough period of time. We made it through, I'm sure our "friendly competition" to the south will as well. Take care all.

The Flames, in most seasons following their only win of a Stanley Cup, haven't had playoff success in consecutive seasons. I'm sure fans of that team will hope that no decade of darkness comes to their team unlike to the Oilers although the Sens are just three seasons away from completing a decade of darkness of their own.

All the years of flames fans putting down the Oilers during the years of darkness..Flames fans should be great full for alot of there years of dominance and being in the playoffs..Oilers just started getting the taste on winning when Ken Holland took over as GM. I'm satisfied that the Oilers put them in a rebuild..it's funny how things have turned around in favor of the Oilers. Suck it up Calgary, enjoy your rebuild.

They can't - sure they have the room, but what are you offering a dman with 70 games , 1 goal, 7 assists, and a -1, or a forward who has 9 goals, 9 assists, in 83 games played (and where his points come from playing with McDavid or Draisaitl - last I check, Calgary has no one on their roster even close to those two)? Whatever the offer is, the OIlers can match it, and if they do make a stoopid (sic) offer like 4.5m or something, well, as Morgan Freeman said to the whistleblower in the Dark Knight about Bruce Wayne being batman - 'Good luck with that'

Only difference between Calgary and the Oilchuckups is we have not been blessed with a ton of first over alls and top 5 in the last what 15 yrs? I feel like this type of attitude pushes Flames and Oilers fans into a mutually assured destruction cycle of hoping for the worst for each other. I feel good about or rebuild- obviously wish the 2019 team didn't end the way it did, but here we are.

I watched another youtube channel talk about how we lost 11 key players in the last 2 years...This is true...I checked and those players scored 167 goals last year. Then I looked at the 11 replacements we made and they only scored 167 goals which is a precipitous drop of 0 goals last year but what makes it worse is the average age of the players who left was about 29 and the replacement average age was only 26 so odds are those older players are going to get even better while our new young players can't hope to improve. I'm thinking at this rate the rebuild might take months maybe even 6 months. Now those are the facts but to be a little more serious the rebuild will take longer because we will need to work on the defense however 20 million in cap space will help along with the 6 1st round picks counting the next two years and the draft that just took place along with the 6 2nds and 5 3rds. But it doesn't look like we plan on getting competitive again this next year. (What I'm saying is we could have if we'd spent the 20 million and grabbed 2 key defensemen). But with the way the draft picks are working a longer rebuild makes way more sense. Another 6 picks next year along with some time for the new picks and current minor players to develop. Our defense is the big question mark with only 2 legitimate 1st line players but we do have about 12 players to shuffle around to see if we can find two 3-4 defensemen and two 5-6 however, two 5-6's is dead simple with that many options. The 12 we have to try are Miramanov, Bean, Bahl, Pachel, Hanley, Brzustewicz, Grushnikov, Solovyov, Kuznetsov, Poirier, Okhotiuk and Parekh. So if you plan to enjoy watching the flames struggle you'd better watch closely next year because it may only last 1 year. If the cap goes up again we might have 25 million to spend on 2 defense. We also have 4 forwards who are in their 1st or 2nd year so they will likely improve, Zary, Coronato, Pelletier and Pospisil. The other good thing is we really only have the 1 bad contract and even yet with the players obvious skill level there is a chance he will turn it around....maybe not to the tune of the 10.5 he's earning but even is he plays to a 6-7 million dollar level that would be fine. There is only 1 other question mark and that is the goaltending but Wolfe did win the AHL most valuable player last year. So no guarantee but you could be looking at Elite level goaltending after a little development time.

I get a laugh out of all the rhetoric regarding what the Flames are doing. I guess the fan base there is so pathetic they can't all a spade a spade for fear of the fans staying away in droves. It's real simple, if a team is trading away all their best players (Hanafin, Tanev, Markstrom, Lindholm) and getting very little back other than draft picks - it's called a R E B U I L D - but maybe Calgary fans aren't smart enough to realize that and are instead buying into the re-tool.

Calgary should have done a rebuild a while ago. They may have been ok if they could have kept Johnny Gaudreau, Matthew Tkachuk, Sam Bennett, Noah Hanifin but they could not. It's probably going to be a while before they are a consistent playoff team again.
