I worked in a women's prison for years and we were told from day one not to get close up and personal with inmates because most were manipulative and would exploit anything to their advantage. A few guards were caught messing with some inmates and were always promptly fired.

The fact that she willingly took on the responsibility of long-term care for her ex, kind of tells you about her personality. It's like she had an overwhelming need to be wanted and needed, and that translated into being loved in her mind. If she'd never met Casey, and Mike introduced her to us, we'd likely be amazed at how selfless and full of love she was. The high likelihood that she was manipulated, and her personality lent itself to being manipulated, doesn't excuse her crimes, but it does help explain them. I hope her family and friends can remember the person she used to be, rather than the one on the news.

Its a Common Move by Criminals with a lot of time or potentially life to seduce a female guard. Shes lucky he didnt kill her right away. I guess he actually did love her. Basically she needed to set her lover free or he was in jail the rest of his life. The plan to go to the smaller city / town and stay in the hotel was probably the worse part of the plan. Should have gone to a bigger city where they could blend in better. it was too sloppy they didnt have any type of long term plan.

I'm a correctional officer and I was following this story pretty closely. When the news of it first broke a lot of my coworkers, including myself, figured if she wasn't dead yet she was gonna end up dead; we weren't far off. There's training we go through and we're warned about the manipulation tactics that inmate can use, unfortunately it doesn't seem to sink in for some people. I work at a co-ed jail that house's federal inmates while they wait for prison and I've seen at least 2 female C/O's get fired for getting too close to inmates (gag 🤢). Out of the past 17 years there had to be more than one guy that tried to get to her. I’m a retired Probation Officer and have worked in many prisons throughout Alaska. As a Field PO in Barrow (Utqiagvik) in 2013 I worked alongside an ADA named Bryan Sullivan, a former AF JAG Officer, an amazingly smart, handsome, good person, recently divorced and new to the village. I warned him many times not to date local women, especially those whose former spouses were in legal trouble. Ignoring such advice from me and many others, he did, and was murdered by the ex-spouse. Tragic case, in a forbidding and unforgiving place where western justice often still clashes violently with the local native culture and isolation. I’d love if you looked into this case if you haven’t already. You do true justice to the victims and tell your stories with both respect and well placed humor. Thank you for considering this case, and don’t ever stop saying “I luv ya” - it makes me smile every time you do.

Been watch lot of he Alaska Cop shows as it is a mirror to what we have here in NT and Top End of WA in the Kimberlie's and Pilbara, there are few shows online NT is called Territory Cops and one on Rangers, Kalgoorlie Cops we also have Community Officers but ours seem to have lot more training and equipment than yours, we don't Charter Planes much we have lot of our own, as officers fly a lot some are pilots but in places like here in Alice Springs they have permanent Pilots and Planes that never seem to stop, Would be great if could get one of those shows to do an exchange between NT / WA Cops, would have to be around this time of year so our lot do not Freeze and your lot don't, it is a Cold 22o Degrees here today have a Jumper on, we here in Alice drop to -6 during winter and days are around 250 so think your guys will be fine, for the Top End it is time of year when no Humidity and temp around 30 ish so nice and cool. If you look up NT Police will find information on Community Officers, shows everything from selection to training, we may be able to exchange knowledge as really have very similar issues, including the blending of western law with traditional, we have really put in lot of work recently of changing the way prisoner's do time and location of where to build facilities so they are on their Country. You will here term On Country a lot that means on their land, their is a huge areas of Land that has been returned to Traditional Owners here, if it is used for Mining, Pastoral, National Parks like ULARU the Traditional Owners, either run it or sit on boards, many are the Rangers for National Parks and the Water Ways, work with Researchers and others on Conservation projects we have fenced of huge amounts of land to save some Marsupials that Feral Cats, Dogs have decimated, they now Own most of land this is done on, they get paid % in Royalties, some use money wisely other do not. Thanks Mike for getting on this story so quickly. Such a sad ending. I actually saw this very seduction in a level 5 prison I worked in. A female corrections officer had an affair with a male inmate. The inmate's cell buddy blackmailed her that if she didn't have sex with him too, he would expose her. She got caught and was escorted in handcuffs off the premises. Both men still served out their original prison time. She was the only loser in that case.

It is interesting how Casey goes from looking like he's sixty in one image to looking like his actual age in another and then he looks ten years older in the next. I do feel a certain level of sympathy for Vicky, though that sympathy is based more on assumption than evidence. She was still the one who acted, though, the one who chose to let a dangerous murderer out into the free world, so that curbs the sympathy a lot.

Crazy case. We always wonder why someone in such a position would do something like this. Well, I´ve experienced something similar, not this spectacular and not so tragic, but still disturbing. I am a forensic psychologist working in prison. Some years back, a female co-worker of mine had an affair with one of my patients/inmates. No one (myself included) knew until a cell phone was found outside the inmates cell window, on which they found explicit chat data and photos. She was immediatly sacked, but faced no further consequences. He was moved to another department. I could of course analyse why she did it, but still, it is hard to grasp why someone would jeopardise their future and career like this into thin air. Mind blowing. Thanks for covering this one :)

Interestingly, she was in the prison system, which teaches you about this. I studied forensics and am going back to study psychology soon.

I'm still on the fence about whether or not she committed "voluntary" suicide, given the fact an ex-GF supposedly did the same in his home while he was present? 6'9". They need a very Special place for these most violent of all offenders. Not fair to jail them with inmates serving time for far less violent or evil crimes. The coroner confirmed it was suicide. She had residue from firing the gun on her right hand and she was in the passenger seat. If you watch the body cam videos of the cops at the scene, it takes them a few minutes to get the gun out of her hand after she shot herself, and then to pull her out of the crashed Cadillac. They had to open the sun roof to get to her. You can hear them say she's still breathing, but she's likely doing agonal breathing at that point. (Death rattle). I think she chose to kill herself so she wouldn't have to face up to what she did. I think she was just done with life. I feel sorry for her mom and all of her loved ones who were left behind.

I am an ER nurse in Florida and heard about this case from a patient, on Mother's Day. I even said it was a perfect case for you. I hope you enjoyed your holiday, but also knew that you would provide the BEST 👌 coverage of the case. While it didn't end well, (which we already figured), I didn't expect this ending. We rather thought that she would end up found, already tossed away and used.I thoroughly enjoy your shows, and have. My patient did, too. Talking about you (and all of the things that we were suspicious about this at-the-time, open case), brought my patient some comfort as we share your talents in common. I also love that you have a kitty 😺. Thank you always for your shows, and in this case, closure. And what an AWESOME way to get back to it and give it a go! BRAVO!

I think most people expected Casey to do away with Vickie when she outlived her usefulness. I knew if he didn’t do it, she would, because after 17 years in corrections, no way she was going to be spending the rest of her life behind bars. But if I’m being completely honest, she did not sound like a woman who was seconds away from un-aliving herself when I listen to the 911 calls when she called them (which was weird in itself) complaining about how they needed to stop ramming the car because the airbags going off, was going to end up killing them and they should have stayed at the motel or should make a run for it, and literally seconds later she was shot and killed.

I think that's so cool that you were able to provide some comfort and could relate to each other with your patient. I always used to do that when I worked in a hospital, it felt amazing to be able to calm someone by talking and relating in some way, about anything. Also it works the other way round too, I've spent a lot of time as a patient myself and I always remember the ones who take the time to sit and listen to me, as well as talk about something completely off topic of what was going on. Thank you for doing that for your patient, I hope they're doing well!

Im from the area where this case started. Most of the information you shared Mike, I had not heard from our local news networks. This was so out of chatacter for Vicky that it was first assumed that she had been kidnapped by Casey. As time went by, it was determined she was involved in his escape. Local law enforcement took a lot of ridicule for this debacle. Im sorry it ended with Vicky taking her life. She isn't the first woman to be conned into something and she won't be the last. RIP Vicky.

I find it strange that Vicky makes a comment in the car, heard over 911, "Stop, the airbags are going to go off and kill us!" Why would she think the airbags will kill them? Thats the opposite of what airbags are made for. Also it sounds like the last thing she says is, "Don't kill us, or their going to kill us." This seems contradictory to her shooting herself.

Apparently the "suicide" of Casey's ex-girlfriend at his mother's home has now been reopened in light of recent events surrounding Vicky 's death. It should be noted that the coroner has ruled Vicky's death a suicide, What does all of this mean in the end? Nothing, really, except two women are dead and a 6'9" miscreant is alive and kicking. A side note: I noticed when Casey is leaving jail with Vicky, he's,not wearing any ankle shackles. I wouldn't think any inmate with the violenthistory that Casey has would be allowed to go off site without another anti-escape measure in place. It's kinda sad that no one noticed they broke protocol on their dry run by going alone and then on escape day ,similarly, no one noticed the lack of a second transport officer and the absence of ankle shackles. Things might've turned out a lot differently had someone noticed something in foresight instead of ignoring the signs when they escaped

I've been to jail and prison and was transported by only one officer every time.... but I was a "non violent offender". And that was 20 years ago. I wonder if she got away with transporting by herself because even if it's "policy" to have two officers, if they've been short staffed it might have been common to just use one. 🤔 I know they would never admit that's the case but there was recently a story on the news about an inmate faking an ankle injury, being transported to court in a wheelchair then booking it. He was being transported 1:1 as well. Glad to know the ex girlfriend suicide has been reopened!

CO to inmate ratio, inmates being violent towards CO’s, the lack of experience for the CO’s, Supervisors abusing their authority & having CO’s wrongfully fired due to personal vendettas. Not to mention the incredibly out of shape CO’s. I’m very disappointed in Sheriff Singleton & don’t expect him to he re-elected. This experience has been very embarrassing for the county to say the least. Also, the jail is literally maybe 3/4 of a mile away from the courthouse

People do crazy things. We will never know what was going through her head. Maybe he got inside her mind and changed her, maybe she was so desperate for affection it pushed her to do these things, maybe she had issues that even she didn't know about or maybe this is just how she was and the only way it could have gone down. The human mind is more complex than even the greatest super computers we have today, all we can do is learn from this and help those who are in danger of going through similar things. We live in an age where mental health is at an all time low, so many complex situations and minds being pushed to their absolute breaking point. I don't have the answers but as long as governments and those charged with helping people aren't doing enough, these things will continue to happen. I'm just hoping for a future where my nieces and nephews can get help if they need it. I don't want them being like me after all!
