The EverQuest Show is counting down the top ten expansions in Everquest and talking to developers about Torment of Velious gameplay and development. There's also news about Rizlona and Aradune, the new progression servers.
Episode 9 of the EverQuest show includes an update on the Aradune and Rizlona servers. Both servers will launch on May 27, 2020. For EverQuest 2, there's also a new update , the Showdown at the Diaku Corral for EverQuest 2. And there are development details behind the making of Torment of Velious with Aaron Bisnett, Tom Tobey and Kevin Lydy. Making the old Scars of Velious giants new again in Torment of Velious. I 100% with Luclin's placement in this list. Just wanted add that Luclin also brought in my favorite (and possibly the most important) innovation in MMOs, the Alternate Advancement system. I can't speak to how it is in later expansions, but the ability to improve your character permanently without getting lucky on a gear drop just felt good. And the fact that it was based on a fixed amount of experience rather than being luck was such a slam dunk in terms of balancing out the hours upon hours of fruitless waiting that tended to be required for anything that mattered.

EQ still felt brand new, then comes Kunark. That expansion blew my mind. I never imagined an online game could evolve the way it suddenly did. Then Velious blew my mind all over again. Those are easliy my #1 and #2 expansions.

I thought the perfect 20th anni would have been a polished EQ classic. Finish, fix, and extend the quests that to this day have not been finished or discovered - probably because they are broken. Add a few dungeons in the places that appeared to have been planned but never finished. I'd buy it.

Reducing the amount of typing would be good. I get tired of "/say what mentor" "/say what mentor who died" "/say what mentor who died mysteriously" [triggered wall of text]. A more intuitive interaction device for dialogue and noticing that an NPC wants something done would make things more streamlined. Pantheon is working on it and it looks good so far, but I haven't played with it yet. Also, there would need to be instancing. Relatively few players blocking content to most players is really bad game design.

Kunark, Velious, and PoP are my top 3 in that order. I am semi-responsible for Quarm in PoP. There was an SOE employee or 2 in my guild and I mentioned the idea of a hydra dragon and how each head could do something different. They told the devs... the devs loved the idea... next expansion was PoP. The original Tribute Masters are named after my former guild mates too.

I agree, RoK was amazballz. Best memory was running top Bard speed with a buddy and falling into the Deep Chasm in Overthere. I fell to my death on top of the Sword point of one of those Sarnak statues. Too high to rez from the ground. Spent hours finding someone with Levitate* to cast on another player with rez, have them jump down and rez me while floating by so I could get my gear. Great times, Priceless. 10/10

I'm only a very new player, f2p, just got my dwarf paladin to level 10 and my dwarf berzerker to level 5 maybe 2 weeks ago. Started on the Crescent Reach quests on the paladin and I was having a blast, some good writing going on there. It'll be quite a while before I get around to seeing the other expansion zones and quests through the heroes journey path, but I'm looking forward to seeing it all. At least in part.

Glad to see another episode already! Nice job. I more or less agree with the picks. It's tough to choose a #1, but I would probably go with the Planes of Power. I remember seeing the EverQuest booth at GenCon and having some great conversations with the developers and looking at all the amazing designs. The sheer variety from all the different planes and progression were amazing. I was already a huge fan at that point and couldn't wait. I can't recall how many Plane of Time runs I attended, and it was amazing to finally conquer them all!

My top 6: 6. House of Thule: Dream/Nightmare theme. 5. Seeds of Destruction: Loved the time travel and mercenaries... 4. Planes of Power: The music and scenery are awesome. 3. Ruins of Kunark: The story and this is start of my raids and epic weapon. (I still can't finish 2.0) 2. Scars of Velious: Coldain shawl is the goal that I still haven't completed till this very day... 1. Shadow of Luclin: Whole new massive new worlds! And Celestial Solvent! Luclin is my favorite because Celestial Solvent/Essence was introduced back then... XD And I can clearly remember that before the day of Luclin being released (I played Traditional Chinese version so the progression was slower than original), I was so excited that I even can't sleep before the release (just because of the Solvent!). So when EQ2 introduced Blood of Luclin last year, I ordered it right away (even though I am still at Chaos Descending...). However I still haven't become my own tradeskill grandmaster till this day, it is too harsh for a soloing cleric to farm necessary ingredients and platinum. 🤣 Thanks for making the show, the show is really professional!

I was worried that Ruins of Kunark might not make the cut as the list went on, but there it was at #1, where it belongs. It looks primitive now, but it was the prototype "everything you could ever want" expansion that set the standard going forward. And it just turned 20 last month!

It is mostly subjective, but I think most will agree that the first 4 expansions are some of the best. The rankings for each individual will be subjective. But I bet most put Kunark there.

We love the show! Keep them coming!! We recently came back and made made toons on the Selos TLP server due to the email we received offering free play on TLP servers. It has been a blast! We ended up re-subbing to help support the game and keep it alive! Our favorite expansion is House of Thule. Being a former Halfing Druid main, I disliked Gates of Discord,. Clicky port stones in the POK (Shadows of Luclin ...think it was that expansion) ruined money making from selling ports but loved that expansion anyway. I have been playing since 2001 on Vazelle which became Maelin Starpyre which became Drinal. Took long breaks but always returned. Introduced my wife to the game in 2014 and she loves it. We quit the last time Jan 2018, due to unplayable lag. The most common area that would suddenly develop lag was Shard's Landing. This was due to someone suddenly arriving while boxing 30+ characters. Suddenly everything would take like 5-10 seconds to happen. Regardless, we love the game! Content like this helps keep us immersed and hungering for more in game fun. p.s. There is NO letter K in the name LUCLIN. Pronounced "Looslin"!! lol Every time I hear someone say LUCKLIN I say out loud, THERE IS NO K!!!!!!!! It's all in good fun and the pronunciation part of the video had us laughing for a while. Keep them coming!

Hi Fading, thx for the Everquest show. I want to suggest some features to EQ if you can talk with the developers: 1 - Capes, Cloaks and Hoods; ( To many Npcs have capes and Hoods, and the art too, why the players dont? EQ 2 have, so..) 2 - A new weapon: Crossbows. ( More range, More dmg, but a little slower than Bow). EQ 2 have too. 3 - A new Class: SpellSword. ( The true mix between Wiz and Warriors) I wait that since 99. 4 - A new Race: Vampires. ( Why not? EQ 2...) So thats it. If they take one of this ideas should be great. Thx for the attention, and keep the grat work in the show. Cya in EQ.

LDON was by far my favorite. As a bard, it finally gave us a chance to SHINE other than just be a mana battery for casters.. that LFG tool was a wonderful addition at the time. It was fun to put together weird groups and still manage to win. 5 Wizzies and a bard, Yep. we kicked butt... CoTF really reminded me of LDON, and people still go do both.. so I'd call them both winners.. and as much hate as people heap on TBL, it had fantastic lore/stories background. But, I hate, HATE Kunark, (And EoK/RoS)

It had the right amount of raid content for the time. Considering there was only 8 months or so between it and Velious, a good chunk of that time for most players was trying to grind out to 60. A pretty small fraction of the player base would have even been thinking about raiding at the time.

Yes, I would love this too, as when I quit EQ in 2001 the 3rd expansion was just released, I tried to go back a few yrs ago and play retail, and going directly from the 3rd expansion to like 20 is insanely overwhelming, couldn't play it, everything was so different, I had no fucking clue wtf was going on.

I didn't want balance between classes, but I also didn't want to spend 100+ days' worth of time on a character and then watch a pure solo class blow right past content. It felt like the risk was divorced from the reward for BLs. Other than that, I loved SoL more than most people did. I just felt like a Vah Shir monk was a no-brainer. A missed opportunity, devs.

My top three are 1) Ruins of Kunark. This is when I started playing the game. There was no aspect of this expansion I didn't like. 2) Shadows of Luclin. I liked the way it made the world a little bit smaller, so I didn't have to be lorded over by Druids or Wizards to get around, or wait forever on the boats, but not so small that travel was almost instantaneous. 3) Scars of Velious. I really enjoyed the competing factions between the Dwarves, Giants, and Dragons.

raid wise I would put Luclin first, then Velious, loved those raids :D amazing loot and not the bloated cookie cutter loot which feels "meaningless" but you still need to bid dkp on it so you don't fall behind, it just feels very meh though. Kunark was amazing and I still love it and the iksar, huuuuuge continent with so much to do (if you don't just race through it to get max level) tons of quests and yes epics :D who doesn't love epics.

I liked your Top Ten, my own would put Gates of Discord at the top followed by Depths of Darkhollow & Rain of Fear after it, I was not a huge fan of the early expansions if I am honest, I really only became a seriously hardcore EQ player with the advent of Gates of Discord which may sound strange until I say "Berserker", without that class I would not still be playing EQ at all, though I did enjoy Planes of Power a lot.

The sad part about EQ is that if you aren't in a guild or are in a small guild you really never get to experience the lore within the game itself. I played from late beta until a little after Luclin and had 300 something days /played and never even maxed out my character because I was never in a guild or the guilds I was in were tiny and casual. So I just spent my time wandering around solo, for the most part, and died a lot as such. Pick up raids or hard dungeons are a no go for most people.

Of all the ones on the top ten list, I *expect* that one to be the most controversial. And for good reason. My main reason for putting it that high on the list was for how well received it was by the players, and how it findamentally changed the game to that point (instanced content, augs, allowing casuals smaller bites of playtime). It made some big changes to the game, though it wasn't as heavy on zone/quest content.

I can not get with Omens of War on your top ten thats when me and quite a few friends fell out of love with EQ. Every mob having the ability to summon you killing kiting in every form. The fact that 90% of the creatures saw through invis and even rogue stealth. Lastly the confusing at the time dungeon system that wasn't nearly as enjoyable as LDON jump in out version. I enjoyed the open outdoor camping and while i stuck with Omens of War for a little bit for raiding in the end i couldn't stand that all the things i loved about EQ had been changed and my druid way of solo kiting killed into the ground.

Maybe it was just my age i started when i was 11 and i was blown away that i was playing an RPG like zelda in a 3D world with 3D modles with other real life players. I got completly lost in that phantasy and kunark truly just enhanced it velious perfected it ST was and is the best raid of all time and in game event of all time making me pay 75 bucks over and over again joining ever server fourm and server hoping just so i could have more of that experience its what keeps me comming back to every TLP but once luclin came out with the nexus a non pvp zone i was just over it. Hurt pvp badly and i started playing blue servers because of it

LDoN is the worst! Rest of your list is pretty good. Gates of Discord has been "fixed" on TLP's now, it's pretty good.

Planes of power had some good things, but took away a lot of immersion for me. It made travel too accessible to everyone, which dissolved the independent nature of the racial communities. I would have put it in the top 10 but at the tenth spot.

I fuckin' hate that this high profile video subscribes to the "pixels = content" bullshit. Kunark had lore in some isolated spots, but it DIDN"T have content. It had gigantic static zones, sparsely populated with mechanically undifferentiated exp pinatas.

Thanks for the comment! First off thanks for considering me High Profile! =) I'm just a fan making videos. Second, that's an interesting argument to make. I'm not sure I necessarily subscribed to that thinking in my top ten. LDON for example would be counter to that, as well as many of the others on the list. I think the quests involved, the lore behind all of it, (epics had LOTS of lore) dragon stories and history and more that are in Kunark are more than just the "pixels" you mention. But I do appreciate the feedback and passion for the game!

Gigantic static zones is good for the immersion imho. Content everywhere is just too much. I like how in original EQ loot was scarce
