This movie looked way better in the trailers. When they brought up how each culture has their own rites and passages of exorcism, it painted the idea in my mind that there were going to be different rituals happening one after another but it turned out to be three or four different rituals all happening with people talking over each other with zero explanation of what was happening how they were unique or what the demon was.

The patriarchy!? In the novel the movie's based on, Chris prepares to go in the room with the priests as they're about to begin the Exorcism, but Father Karras talks her out of it. If I recall, if Regan died during the Exorcism, they didn't want Chris's final memories of her daughter being her violent death while performing the Exorcism ritual. I remember watching this film the day it came out in theatre's with my mom (she introduced me to horror films and loves them herself). I remember she said before seeing it that she hopes there are a couple good scenes, when the film ended she said "That was a waste of a movie", and I gotta agree, it feels like especially at the end that they cut some parts out, like at the end when they show Hell, its like 4 seconds long if that and isnt all impactful, or the part when one of the girls vomit on the celling and it shows, stuff happening, only to forget about it entirely. And Im not gonna lie when she was stabbed in the eyes with the crucifix I was laughing, hard. It was really funny. During the entire film, I heard no one jump or inhale, it was dead silent and when the film ended people just got up and left, no one cared about what they had just seen. Which as we can all agree is a mark of a good film, it really was a waste of a movie.

For me the problem is simple and even plain to a lot of people to be honest. Audiences don't want a sequel to The Exorcist, I mean no sequel has outdone the original at the box office at all yet for some reason they keep making sequels, precules to that movie. There are a lot of movies they people can argue if that deserved a sequel to or not but with The Exorcist it feels like a open secret it doesn't need a sequel, precule or requle it is great on its own.
@mania4270 Жыл бұрын
Speak for yourself, the problem is fans gatekeeping and acting like they know what's best for filmmaking. Many ppl did like this film. And just because they aren't as vocal as some of the haters doesn't mean ppl didn't want an exorcist movie. YOU didn't want one. Me and many others wanted one and liked what we got. Can't wait for the sequel. What many of you miss was that this movie had the sense of community and help from our fellow man. Just because it isn't shocking, doesn't mean ppl don't wanna see it. Some ppl watch exorcist because it was just a great story. I feel like this movie was made for those ppl.

12:30 - 12:39 That line pretty much sums up Green's Halloween sequels too lol Hopefully after his Exorcist trilogy, Green will stop with reviving old classic horror movies. He was lucky enough with Halloween 2018. But after that, he just flew off. Not just Green, but Hollywood in general. If they want to do horror remakes (which aren't necessary), just do them once and awhile. We don't need a horror remake every year or two. Or remakes in general if I'm being honest. *cough* Disney. They can remake this movies all they want, and give them sequels, but they'll NEVER beat the originals! You CAN'T struck gold twice. Sorry about that mini rant lmao I'm just sick of all these remakes and sequels to classic movies. Good review Andy! I'll just ignore this movie. I watched the movie last Wednesday. I was disappointed, to say the least. The original Exorcist has been deemed one of the scariest horror movies ever created and there are many reasons for why, even after half a century, horror fans and general audiences keep coming back to watch it and be horrified. The acting, the lighting, the effects, that iconic theme, the editing, and cinematography of the original are still amazing. The Exorcist: believer is a mess, and to me, it feels like the writer and director had not a single clue in their brain for why the original is such a masterpiece. Having two girls possessed instead of one feels like the first idea they came up with to be original, the aspect of religion and multiple representative characters of said religions end up eating away too much screen time. leaving very little time to build any kind of tension or atmosphere or have proper character development . The CGI smoke was laughable, and the editing isn't suitable for people who suffer from epilepsy during the actual exorcism The movie looks decent enough, and the practical/make-up effects are at least top-notch. The only actors who did a very good job, in my opinion, were Leslie Odom jr. and Lydia Jewett. The rest were just okay. One of the worst insults of all is that they bring back Ellen Burstyn after all these years to once again play Chris Macniel and build her up to be a very important part of the story, only to unceremoniously mutilate her and turn her into the biggest pure flix movie like religious exposition dump fairy of the movie. I almost yelled out 'Fuck you' to the screen when the final 10 second cameo of the movie appeared before the last 2 second shot of the movie. I Think the movie would have worked better if it was only one possessed girl and the only people who tried to save her from the demon were her father, the two neighbors, Chris Macniel and that roothealer. Have it set up that the demon is a parasite like creature who feeds off of innocence and pain gained from tragic loss of loved ones and although it can be expelled from it's host through exorcism, it is almost impossible to either destroy it or send back to hell/the underworld. This would give us a set up for a second and third movie. Is The Exorcist: Believer as batshit insanely bad as Exorcist 2: The Heretic? No, was it as scary as the original? HELL NO! The only sequel in this franchise that's worth a watch is Exorcist 3. But for a truly terrifying experience, you're still better off with the original. And I agree with you Andy, that this movie isn't worth the ticket price. Great review.

I watched it last night.(online, refused to pay a movie ticket due to reviews). Was not online incredibly boring, but just……….all over the place. SPOILERS AHEAD…. We don’t get to see the girls enough to sympathize with them, the parents are completely lifeless and aren’t believable as terrified parents who children as possessed and risk death, The nurse, ex nun (tho I usually love the actress) was just …….there. Ellen Burstyn looked like she’d rather be anywhere else than there. The whole “we’ve met before…” thing was so dumb because she had no idea if the girl was even possessed yet and if she was was, through all of the decades of studying on possession, she only thought there was 1 demon who possessed everyone??? The “are you looking for Raegan” scene was laughable and seemed more like an SNL skit than a horror movie. When she gets blinded, it’s as if she got a paper cut and was kinda like……..”I guess I’m blind now and my life is irreparably changed forever………meh!”. That patriarchy line actually made me laugh out loud, and not in a good way. 2 men died saving her daughter………but sexism.?? Smh. Nothing happens until the exorcism 20 minutes from the end and even then it’s dire. The effects are predictable, as are the voices, which are the furthest thing from scary. I could do a scarier voice and I’m not joking. It’s a shame as the girls were great little actors but the material and dialogue they were given were terrible. The ‘vapour’ or whatever came out of them during the exorcism was filmed and acted like it was suppose to be this shocking awe inducing image, but it was just………smoke. The catholic priest at the end was just…who the F cares. They turned his head around cause ‘Exorcist movie’. Wasn’t shocking, wasn’t scary, was comical if anything. And the bringing together of all religions was beyond ridiculous, (without any introduction to who the hell they are beforehand, they just……..show up) especially with what’s going on the world today. If that was real, they’d have been at each other’s throats the entire time while the girls died from neglect. The ending wasn’t shocking, or tragic or even sad, it just……ended. I expected this from the trailer alone to be garbage but it’s shocking how much they missed the mark in this one. It’s almost like they weren’t even trying. They paid $400 million for the rights to make this, cost another $44 million to make it, and THIS is what they came up with?? Are you fu$&in shittin me??? I can’t even say I’m disappointed as I never expected anything great to begin with. The Exorcist was a masterpiece in horror cinema. Nothing will ever come close. There’s no point in trying. But there are so many writers and directors who could’ve done a better job at helming this. To give it to DGG after the Halloween debacle was just asking for trouble. The guy just can’t do horror. He does every single thing wrong. Everything. There was no build up, no suspense, no intrigue, no creep factor or tension building. Nothing. This was so tame I wouldn’t even call it a horror movie. I have absolutely ZERO interest in seeing a sequel, let alone 2. The best thing they can do is cut their losses and carry on with the tv show as that’s the only other version that wasn’t complete dogshit. Oh, and Reagan is in the last 10 seconds…………cause Exorcist movie. yay.😶Great review as usual Andies! This was more entertaining than the actual movie. And you didn’t cost $444 million…..

OK I never seen this movie yet but as the movie Pro trays he had to pick between his wife and his baby so I’m guessing he picked this baby. Can someone elaborate on that for me please😢

To elaborate on that would include spoilers… The paramedics ask him to choose. We don’t witness his answer as it cuts to 13 years later. During the exorcism at the end the possessed daughter reveals he chose his wife. The demon tries to make him feel guilty for not wanting his daughter. So he assures Angela that he does indeed love her.

I was initially quite intrigued by what I thought this film was going to be. Bringing in a different faith is really interesting and nit something I've seen before. But the more I've seen and heard since release the less interested I am. The original is character based, nuanced, textured and subtle. This looks like a typical overblown Hollywood horror film. The fact it's being shown in 4DX is the thing that convinced me to wait until it's streaming. I think I'll stick to the original and the only real sequel Exorcist 3. While I will defend elements of David Gorden Greens Halloween trilogy, the more I see and hear off him, the more I think the subtext and commentary I appreciate in them is purely accidental. Because when he has something to say with those movies, even though I'm pretty much in agreement with him, he hammers that home with the subtlety of a nuclear detonation.

The TV series was pretty good. I loved how each Season offered something different. They should have continued it. As for the Prequels...I like them both. And, of course, Exorcist III. PS If someone is interested in a very, very good recent posession movie that offers something new please, go watch : THE EXORCISM OF GOD.

“The Last Exorcism” is a great movie. The ending warbles a bit, but it’s well acted and the effects are consistent.

While this film is definitely better than Exorcist II & Exorcist: The Beginning, it’s definitely bellow both Dominion & the TV Show in terms of quality. No film can ever come close to matching the high quality of both the original film & Exorcist III, which is too high of a bar for any future film to reach.
