They interrogated Amos, but it was six hours of him with his arms crossed and an unblinking death stare. The only answer he gave, when pressed on his relationship with Naomi, was "mind your own fucking business". You know it's true.

OPA stands for Outer Planets Alliance (to counter the Inner Planets Alliance, ie. Earth and Mars). And as becomes clear later, OPA stands for many different things to many different people. Belters use lots of hand-gestures in their dialects, because it evolved (in part) as a way to communicate in space suits with sealed faceplates. Gestures facilitate communication when people can't see one another's facial expressions. The Belter creole is an artificial language that appears in the books, but was fleshed out a lot more for the TV series. It's a conglomeration of the languages spoken in all the nations that sent people to Asteroid Belt. The Asteroid Belt is huge and widely dispersed, so local accents differ, but all Belters speak the creole. OPA stands for "Outer Planets Alliance." It's a loose association of factions that have widely varied goals and methods. Nice catch about Julie's name, and that she was an OPA member. Her name is Julia Andromeda Mao, and she's named after her father, Jules-Pierre Mao. You saw Jules-Pierre's face in Julie's messages. Holden is, in fact, a product of recombinant DNA engineering. He has the best genetic attributes of eight parents. You nailed the Focus Drug effects. Nicely done. :) And, very nicely noted about Phoebe, the moon of Saturn. You should've kept reading about that. Learning more about the places mentioned in the series won't spoil the story, but does help things make sense, as the plot progresses. The series has nine books, written by two different people, who use the nom de plume of James S.A. Corey. The series is arranged in a trilogy of trilogies. This is the first book of the first trilogy. When the authors sold the TV rights to the novels, as part of the contract they asked to join the writing team for the TV series. The series follows the books quite closely, as a result, but with a far more streamlined plot. Some individual characters in the series also combine several characters in the books. In a lot of ways, the writing in the TV series makes some really good choices about storytelling efficiency, while still adhering to the books much better than most adaptations.

The first three episodes are kind of slow, as they have a lot of set up. But starting with four, things start really taking off. When I first watched this series, I stopped after the third episode, then went back to it months later. But from episode four on, I couldn't stop watching. Binged it all within a week. probably the best science fiction show I've seen, except for BSG.

Phoebe was delibertately chosen as a plot point because astronomers have established it is not a satellite that developed in orbit around Saturn, but, instead, was captured by Saturn's gravity while it was on the way to someplace else, from someplace else. The majority opinion about Phoebe is that it was an object within the Oort clould that had a higly elliptical orbit around Sol and on one trip a very long time ago got pulled into orbit around Saturn. I am advised that spectral analysis of Phoebe and other objects from the Oort cloud show highly similar rock composition.

OPA = Outer Planets Alliance . . specifically planets eros and ceres but the belt in general
@thomashiggins9320
@thomashiggins9320 3 жыл бұрын
Also, Jupiter's moons. The "outer planets" means anything out past the "frost line," which is the distance from a coalescing sun where it's so cold that water freezes into ice instead of evaporating out into the vacuum. The "frost line" for our Solar System, during it's initial formation, probably appeared about where the Asteroid Belt is, now. Planets inside the frost line -- Mars, Earth, Venus and Mercury -- are the "inner planets." They only have liquid water if conditions are perfect (i.e., Earth). On the other three planets, liquid water is very difficult to find (highly saline, subterranean Martian aquifers, maybe), or doesn't exist at all and the water consists of ice crystals in sheltered locations, only. In the outer planets, frozen volatiles of all sorts -- including water, ammonia, methane and others -- are commonly available, but so far away they're hard to reach.

Like any terrorist organisation, the OPA has hard liners and moderate elements. Whenever we discuss the OPA we need to be clear in that fact, it's not a single movement with a unified vision, except for the general over-arching idea of a free, independent belter state. How that is achieved varies by which member you ask.

No logos in space? Ha!. The Canturbury's company, Pur N Clean, is a start. But there will be more. Both of the times we saw the UN Ambassador Frank DeGraaf, he was writing with a pencil in a paper notebook. Details are important in this show. The Outer Planets Alliance is similar to the Irish Republican Army or the Palestinian Liberation Organization. It's the only organization that supports Belter interests, so most Belters would be at least somewhat in favor of it, although not actual members. But like the IRA and the PLO, we see that there are OPA members working legitimately (like Fred Johnson) and some that seem to be shady (like Anderson Dawes), and some are outright terrorists. This story actually began as a role-playing game, then became a successful novel series. Yes, the original writers are also on the screenplay team. They've made quite a few changes from the novel series to meet the requirements of the television medium, but they're keeping close to the spirit of the original. It's never made clear in the series, so I'll tell you: The UN has acquired nearly all private land on Earth, but a loophole in the imminent domain law allows people to keep their land if it had been in the possession of eight prior ancestors. But the law didn't specify that the eight ancestors couldn't be in the same generation. That left a loophole for eight people who owned adjacent plots of land in Wyoming to use gene-splicing to create a child from portions of all of their DNA. Thus, Jim Holden became an heir with eight ancestors who owned the land before him, so the UN can't take their land.

At first, Belter felt like Jamaican, also a creole. But they didn't want it to be exclusively one thing; they wanted it to feel global. So, they took elements from Chinese, European and English accents, and salted them in to the recipe as a means of counterbalancing the Jamaican accent. As a result, Belter seems familiar… but you can’t quite put your finger on it.

It's fun to hear them speculate about how everything is connected and know how wildly off they are. BTW, I seriously doubt they are looking at the comments section. These guys have been around long enough to know what spoilers are and where to go to find them, and thus where not to go to avoid them.

Most call it 'belter creole'. &, from what i have read, creole is 1 of a few languages the creator of the language,-for the show-used as inspiration

Miller's partner is Havelock, and you are correct that he has been learning the Belter language so that he can "fit in." The OPA (Outer Planets Alliance) is like the Irish Republican Army, in that they are everywhere, though they tend to be much less organized. Anderson Dawes is the OPA's equivalent of Malcolm X.

I just started this show and have seen only up to this episode so far, so I would appreciate no spoilers. But I find it weird that the Canterbury is the only ship that mines ice to supply to Ceres. Shouldn't there be more than a single supply ship?

I don’t think it’s ever answered but I think Ceres only needed the one shipment so they only ordered one.
@nerd660
@nerd660 3 жыл бұрын
@@robertwinslade3104 I mean, if there are more ships there wouldn't be a need for harsh rationing of water and the riots could be avoided. Of course, that would depend on the shipment schedules too.
@robertwinslade3104
@robertwinslade3104 3 жыл бұрын
@@nerd660 water is already rationed on Ceres and that kind of frugal use of resources is ingrained in Belter culture. It makes sense that if a massive ice hauler like the Cant fails to make a delivery that the rations will have to temporarily be tightened; doesn't mean that the Cant is the only one. Also, the riots are more to do with people believing the inner planets just blew up a ship full of belters, which works to deliver ice to belters, than anger at water rationing. Most belters already think they get a raw deal from the inner planets and are treated as somewhat expendable; this just proves that point
