One important detail you may have not picked up on in the episode, is the fact that the stealth ships attacking the Donnager were equipped with railguns. In the setting, railguns are a weapon almost exclusively reserved for capital ships (ie. battleships) due to their power requirements and size. The fact that the stealth ships were relatively small and equipped with railguns means whoever is behind the Canterbury has considerable resources and tech at their disposal.

@@dragoninthewest1 I suspect it's more of a "attaching a railgun to a smaller ship is LUDICROUSLY expensive" problem. So Mars wouldn't do it because at the scale you'd produce a fleet it's just not worth solving the power/recoil problems for the vast cost. But Mao's fleet didn't need to be cost effective, they could only produce a few ships with whatever stealth composites they could steal unnoticed. So spending the huge money to put railguns on small ships was suddenly viable because they only made, like, 7 total.
@ReddwarfIV
@ReddwarfIV 11 ай бұрын
@campbell91988 I think it's that small ships are less capable of defending themselves. You could fit a rail gun to a frigate but it's useless if the frigate can't reach CQB. The Protogen frigates had stealth tech. It allowed them to hide five ships behind one's drive plume.

Little detail, but one of the holes is plugged by the emergency manual that covers what to do if something like explosive decompression (what happens after the railgun slug hit) occurs. In the book, Holden is in the room, and he has to desperately try to stop from laughing, since he's afraid that, between Shed dying and the sheer irony, he might go manic and lose his sanity.

It probably won't turn up in the show (or at least not for a while), but one of the ships that is mentioned is the "Mark Watney;" the authors sat next to Andy Weir (author of The Martian) at a convention, and all agreed that their stuff is in the same continuity. So The Martian is now a soft-prequel to The Expanse.

Yeah I know the feel, the sci-fi setting is just not for everyone I suppose, or at least the majority will discard it straight away. Despite The Expanse being as realistic as sci-fi can get. Did convince 2 friends to watch by explaining it as a sci-fi GoT and convinced them to watch up till this episode. If you succeed in getting them to at least watch the first 4 episodes you're pretty much golden. They are both hooked on the show now :D

One of the really neat things about the show is its attention to physics and scientific detail. A good example is the gravity on the Donnager. Two practical methods of generating gravity (rather than the usual magic "artificial gravity" we see in Star Trek or Star Wars) are rotational gravity created by having the craft or station spin, or thrust gravity which only applies while the craft has forward thrust. When the donnager's reactor shuts down and the ship loses forward momentum you'll notice that the ship loses gravity as a result, and then regains it when the reactor and thrusters start up again. It's a small thing but a really nice attention to detail.

How they maintain gravity in The Expanse is to constantly accelerate for the first half of the journey, then for the 2nd half they 180 flip the ship and decelerate the rest of the way by firing the engine in the same direction they are traveling.
@TehIdiotOne
@TehIdiotOne 4 жыл бұрын
@@drakgan There's something in physics called the equivalence principle. Physically the force experienced is no different between standing on a massive body pulling you to the ground, to standing in an accelerated frame of reference(for example a spaceship accelerating constantly forward). Thus in the Expanse(and possibly in the future), the best way to generate a G-force that tricks our body into thinking it's gravity, is to just accelerate constantly at 1g.

The story remains good, but the dialogue gets to sounding like the fight scenes in the original Star Trek looked: stilted, and embarrassing.

Re: Juice as morning coffee, you probably wouldn't like it very much. :) They go into more detail in the books, but it's basically a cocktail of chemicals that keep your blood vessels from collapsing or bursting, as well as stimulants (and I think some pain meds), all to keep people awake and functional under really high G maneuvers. It's actually bad to be on it for an extended length of time (under high enough G no amount of chemical is going to keep you from eventually having a stroke), and it makes you super sick afterwards when you come down from a big enough dosage.

They destroyed the Canterbury (an Earth-owned ship) and Earth assumes Mars did it because who else could? Now the same crew destroyed the Martian flagship with their crazy-advanced stealth ships (that was like watching speedboats take down an aircraft carrier) and naturally Mars will assume Earth is responsible, because who else could it be?!

To add further emphasis, in the books they really press home that anything other than another battleship attacking something like the Donnager is tantamount to instant suicide. "They say one of those can kill a planet" being one of the lines used. That multiple ships are closing in, make it to the point where Big D is using its railguns means that not only has something gone horribly wrong, but this is literally the first time a battleship has had to resort to that. Alex, who is former MCRN, starts panicking because of that, and the implication that if it has reached that point, they will very very likely die.

Earth isn't a utopia. The Martians have disdain for Earthers because Earth is such a great planet, but Earthers ruined it, destroyed the environment, are overpopulated, and a lot of people live off of "Basic" a kind of dystopian Welfare, whereas everyone on Mars has to have a purpose, and contribute to society, and they have a dream of terraforming Mars. And fighting against Earth has set back Terraforming because they had to spend money and resources on the Martian military instead of transforming. Think about how the Cold War Arms/Space Race bankrupted the Soviets. The Martians don't want to end up losing a generation's worth of terraforming because of an arms race with Earth, yet they also take pride in being the strongest military power, and have started getting more militaristic and less idealistic. So BOTH views of Mars: dreamers working towards a better planet and militaristic war hawks, are both right

It's not normally for direct ship-on-ship fire like in The Expanse, but instead to fire a projectile further than any battleship ever could. Hey Normies and fans!! I'll preface this by saying I'm super obsessed with this show. So glad I found these old reactions, I hadn't been with the Normies then and didn't know you did reactions, Yahoo!!! This episode was where I gave up the first time watching for exactly the opposite reason as most claim: the episode's realism. I felt like the run across the catwalk was so unbelievable, especially when Jim and Naomi have that cool zero G moment. (I ended up trying again and got seriously hooked.) My problem with that moment I think comes from the sparks hitting the catwalk. First, the baddies are unbelievably terrible shots, they're raining hellfire and only get Amos once? Yeah right. But my biggest problem comes when James and Naomi float away & the sparks are still hitting the rails of the catwalk, indicating bullets are still flying accurately and the bad guys are still firing accurately. Yet none hit James and Naomi? Whaa? ... I wish the show had shown the gunfire stop or start to go all over the place and shown the bad guys floating out of control too. Then I would've believed that moment, but the fact that they're in the middle of the catwalk, stationary, for so long and yet they're never once hit .. that made me throw up my hands and abandon the show, it was too corny and unbelievable imo. What do you all think, did I miss something that explains away my opinion?? I'd really like to know! I'm so glad I tried again because it's now one of my favorite shows on tv! Love your reactions btw, can't wait for S4!! Hope you react to it beratnas!!!

I think that scene was drawn out longer than would be realistic just to clearly illustrate jim and naomi's catwalk maneuver... If they had all just bolted across the bridge in relative safety, they miss the opportunity to illustrate the complications of zero g. This scene also bugs me a bit, but remember it's in slo-mo, so they're not actually out in harms way for as long as is depicted. Agreed it could have been done more realistically, but i see why they chose this. Not as bothersome as that scene in Drive where the car sounds like its speeding up but doesnt actually. God damnit.
