This is a useful thing to remember about space travel in the Expanse. The technology allowing them to travel quickly (the engines) is fiction, but the way they travel is real. It's just simple orbital mechanics that our world's various space programs use every day. So if you can see the ship and you can see it's heading, it's velocity and its delta-v, then you can project where it's going to go and at what point it will arrive. For the ship to change where it's going, or change the time at which it arrives, it has to change its delta-v, which again if you see, you can now work out the new point. The stealth ships are powerful because you can't see them to find out this information, but only during the coasting phase of the journey. As soon as they turn their engines on they can no longer hide where they are or where they are going (just as we see in the Battle of the Donnager).

It's understandable to miss/ forget details. First, they watch a lot of shows, second there's a lot of moving parts. I've watched this show multiple times, and often discovered things I missed the first viewing, or after rewatching understood certain things better. The data broker's chip led him to the hamster's chip, which led him to the flight info, which led him to contacting Siemi, who told him about the Anubis. So yeah, not surprised they got that twirled up. Aaron's on the right track, and next episode clears a lot up. Anyway enjoying the reaction.

10:55 That info is from the chip that Fred took out of Lopez's suit in 1x6. Lopez got it from Captain Yao of the Donnager in 1x4. She told him to make sure to get it off the ship with Holden. Yao got the chip from one of her bridge crewman who she had earlier told that she wanted IDs on the stealth ships attacking them. She told the crewman that she wanted detailed imagery and drive signatures on each of the attacking ships. Switching topics to the Scopuli. Julie discovered information regarding the pending transfer of an unknown weapon from Phoebe Station to Eros on board the Anubis. She asked Anderson Dawes to arrange for the Anubis to be intercepted and for the unknown weapon to be commandeered for the belt. Fred Johnson commissioned the Scopuli for the mission while Dawes provided the crew and some boarding party mercenaries. P.S. You guys didn't include in this video but there's a cameo by the authors of the books, and producers on the show, Ty Frank and Daniel Abraham (combined pen name James S.A. Corey) in this episode. They are right in front of Miller as he disembarks onto Eros. Daniel Abraham is in front with the black jacket and rolled up sleeves, Ty Frank is right behind him with the long hair and goatee.

The Scopuli was the bait that lured the Canterbury, it had a distress beacon. The Anubis hovered in stealth mode near the Scopuli and waited. The motive is yet to be revealed, and the blue gloop how it figures is again yet to be revealed. You don't get all the pieces to the jigsaw.

History repeating itself... a bunch of American settlers went into Texas and declared it independent, fought a war with the country who claimed it. Then you send a bunch of Texans to Mars and they do the same thing.

And in the Mariner valley on Mars, where Alex comes from, the first settlers consisted of a mishmash of people from Earth, like East Indians, Pakistanis, Chinese and Texans etc. The Texas accent stuck among the population of Mariner valley, so if u hear a Martian with a Texas drawl in this show, you know exactly where they hail from. Other Martians speak differently because they are not from the Mariner Valley, but come from a different settler group of Martians.

No, in the book, different parts of Mars were settled by people from different parts of Earth - the Mariner Valley, which is where Alex is from, was settled by groups of colonists from Texas and Pakistan. Several generations later, you have a lot of brown people, talking with Texas twangs. The books mention that people from other parts of Mars either think the Mariner Valley accent is charming, or annoying.

The data broker with the spoofing chip in his leg sold info about the cargo and flight path of the Anubis to Julie, who shared it with Anderson Dawes, who put a hit on the data broker before he could re-sell the info to anybody else and also sent Julie, who probably volunteered for the project, out in the Scopuli to intercept the Anubis and see what it was carrying, which was an unknown, but seemingly very important. The Anubis would surely have been registered as anything else other than a nuclear armed, state-of-the-art warship, so Dawes erred in thinking the the Anubis could be boarded and its cargo taken by a rag-tag team of a few belters, so the mission went south quickly once the intercept occurred. Miller figured out the general nature of Julie's mission on the Scopuli and explained it to all of us after he got the info off of the memory chip Julie had concealed in her robotic hamster. The scene occurred in Julie's apartment with his former hot female partner, Octavia, listening. It could have been viewed as mere speculation, but turned out to be spot on. The Scopuli was maybe destroyed, or had all power turned off, by the Anubis and its crew. and would have disappeared from radar in the vicinity of that asteroid. Certainly Fred would have been carefully tracking the Scopuli from Tycho Station. Makes sense for Fred to send our heroes to the asteroid to try and get on the trail of Lionel Polanski. For that matter, the transponder fot the Anubis probably went dark near the asteroid, too. I think our heroes were looking for the Scopuli parked on the asteroid and unexpectedly found the Anubis, instead, or at least that is how I interpreted the events based upon what we should have noted in this and prior episodes. I'm not sure if it was ever explained how Fred also wanted our heroes to go to Eros. I think Fred might have offered an explanation while recruiting Holden for the rescue mission, but I cannot recall the details of that conversation right now. I'm sure other commenters would recall. I'd have to think Fred would not reveal anything to Holden other than what Holden needed to know for the mission, so it might have been as simple as "he disappeared near this asteroid, and might have gone to Eros".

You guys might have missed one or two things, but you've gotten all the main points you should have gotten at this point. The show so far has been a mystery/detective show. As a recap to clarify some of what you were discussing after the show: Miller found a dead body and recognized him from Julie's tinder page and later dug into the guys leg to get the memory chip. That chip contained stolen government files so Miller knew the guy had been a data broker but none of the actual files were relevant to the case because those had already been delivered to Julie. Miller was able to find the flight path of the Scopuli using data from navigational beacons and saw that it intercepted the flight path of the Anubis. He was able to track the data broker back to a shop where he realized that the data broker used robot hamsters as hiding places so he went back to Julie's apartment to grab the chip which he then hid inside his hat. When he finally saw those files, he saw video footage from Phoebe about some type of possible bioweapon. Answers (and a lot more questions) are coming soon.

The show is truly a phenomenal adaptation of the books. One of the best ever adaptations, I'd say. But I'm still always bummed that they changed the design of the "thing" (to avoid spoilers). It's so utterly horrifying and revolting in the books, and it's still disturbing in the show, but it's just missing that extra UGH factor.

@Concetta Spoilers, obviously, for the first book, but they SUPER hyped up the body horror in the books. Julie's appearance is pretty accurate, but the show toned down on the later stuff that happens in Eros Station. It rips things apart and rebuilds them piece by piece. The inside of the station is decorated with still-suffering, disembodied human parts, like a person torn in half or only their arms or legs. Instead, in the show you get more of an organic but alien look. In the books it's a lot more horrifying. One thing I wished they'd kept from the books was Eros Station talking. It didn't say anything meaningful, just random words and turns of phrase, but the station constantly broadcast this weird word salad in the voices of its inhabitants. Super creepy, but probably confusing to try to convey to a tv audience.

Scopulai was the OPA attempt at trying to steal something that was coming back from Phebe station. They didnt know what it was, but Julie had told them its her fathers stuff, so it will be valuable in some major way. However, they were no match at all for a stealth ship. Once the stealth ship killed the Scopulai crew (minus Julie because they knew who she was just by looking at her. She is pretty famous racer), it used the ship to setup a trap for the Canterbury which was their original target. Why? Because it was bringing water to Ceres station. But why? Because they were trying to start a war.

The Scopuli was a OPA ship that was I believe looking for and/or following the Anubis. They were boarded by the Anubis and its crew taken for unknown reasons but probably to interrogate. They then used the Scopuli as a trap by setting the distress beacon using the mars-made tech. Based on the first episode, and the sounds Julie heard while locked up, I do believe it was the Anubus who stuck around to kill the Canterbury. I am guessing they wanted the Scopuli boarded to find that Martian tech and frame Mars which is why they only fired after it had been boarded. Also Alex has a Texan accent because a large number of the original colonists were Texan.

The Scopuli left Ceres on an intercept course with the Anubis en route from Phoebe to Eros.

The Scopuli clearly lost against the Anubis and Julie send the rescue message. She was then captured by the Anubis crew after realizing how valuable she is. The rescue message attracted the Canterbury which then was also destroyed. The Anubis crew dies from being affected by the stuff. Julie escapes that cell, hides the ship, sends the coordinates to Fred Johnson and takes the shuttle to Eros to wait for help.

Fred sent the scopuli because he heard about hte stuff from the Data Broker. So they sent the scopuli and julie to check out the anubis. The Anubis then took the scopuli and destroyed the cantebury I guess wanting to cover everything up and provide distractions. It was burnt, property was stolen, Mormons were killed and run off by decree/extermination order of a governor and the state. The survivors were forced into exile and settled the territory of Utah.

Pheobe is a moon of Saturn and a research station in the Belt run jointly by Mars and the Protogen company. Protogen is one of many companies in the Mao-Kwikowski mercantile group owned partially by Jules Pierre Mao, Julie Mao's father. Mao-Kwikowski owns many businesses both in the Belt and on Earth besides Protogen, like f.ex. Star Helix Security that Miller works for. They provide privately run police forces under UN contracts on cities on Earth like Baltimore to Ceres Station in the Belt. Jules Pierre Mao and The Mao- Kwikowski group has business links in the whole solar system from Earth to Mars to the Belt through their various companies.

Just watched the entire 5 seasons. My criticism would be (1) all those odd English accents make it often difficult to understand. (2) thought that they should have hired more male American actors who are the better actors in the series. (3) There is too much emotion from the females which is out of character for any organization. Example, the Persian lady who runs the UN is constantly using pejorative language which is not suited for her culture and age...this comes through in the acting. Great sci fi effects and wonderful overall story.
