Bob Iger's new book gives a personal look into the negotiations between Disney and George Lucas and how things went somewhat sour between the two. The fallout between George Lucas and Disney came from the Disney company tossing out the story treatments George Lucas proposed for the sequel trilogy.

It was sad that you could predict everything what would happen in Force Awakens, even if you had never seen it. The most "in-your-face" plagiarism I've seen in film industry. Then came Last Jedi... pure chaos without any sense or direction. Now... who takes this trilogy as being part of Star Wars? I see it more like a non-official (bad) novel, but not as the continuation of Episode VI. Fans have no obligation either of including/accepting Disney's storyline within the Star Wars universe ;)

I am mainly disappointed that there is another death star again. That's so boring. And I don't like the beginning were a storm trooper is able to defend a lightsword. In my imagination it's cuts trough everything. Only another lightsword can defend it. Btw. It was a waste of Max von Sydow to give him a cameo only. He would have been good for the whole movie.

Lucas is *NOT* blameless in this story. He's the one who suggested they hired *Kathleen Kennedy* to head Lucas Film and produce these movies. She was Lucas and Spielberg's assistant when they made *Indiana Jones* and many other epic movies of the 80's and early 90's. Disney didn't know she was going to turn Star Wars into a hot pile of feminist shit we're seeing now.

Unfortunately we saw George's vision during the prequels, and without a good editor like his ex-wife and solid directors like Larry Kasdan, his visions are a jumbled mess of bad dialogue. Imagine writing dialogue so bad that Natalie Portman, Ewan MacGregor, and even Samuel L. Jackson sound like wooden puppets. Did this guy seriously want to sell his Star Wars empire for BILLIONS of dollars and think he could still micromanage the story like he did during the prequels and everything else? Imagine JJ Abrams or whatever director/writer being strangled by daily notes from George Lucas back at Skywalker Ranch. At some point, someone needs to assume control and tell the story, and you can't have too many hands in the pot. The same people who blame Disney for doing to their Star Wars are the same people who howled with laughter at the corny prequels and Mr. Plinkett's prequel reviews, showing George Lucas as inept and detail-obsessed and unable to write dialogue. You can't have it both ways. George Lucas is either a genius who should write/direct/everything his films, or he has to give over control to someone else.

@@nopejoeandangie I hear you, me personally i had no problems with the prequels growing up, now not so much but i still love them but i can understand the people who don't. Having said that i believe that in spite of their bad dialogue and acting there were other things from those films that were, at least in my eyes, really interesting and things that felt like star wars. Interesting and creative new worlds, creative new and old alien races, awesome fights, interesting world building that didn't mimic the one before and felt like a new era, new vehicles, and a story that, yeah has its ups and downs, but at least had a direction. That it's what these new movies lack, a direction and a creative force that cares about the source material, yes the new movies has some good acting and decent dialogue (except in my opinion TLJ) but they lack the heart and a clear direction. I'm looking at episode 9 and i can't understand what they are going to do because the story with these movies are so disconnected and poor thought out that i don't care what happens to anyone or anything. So i guess that in a way i would prefer George Lucas directing and writing and all that just of his creative input because at least we have that, the new movies are just nothing

I'm wondering if Disney actually threatened him? They sure got Fox easily enough, and this is something the US government should have stopped. They had no problem stopping ATT from buying out T Mobile. I also remember reading something that the creator of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was approached by Disney to sell the franchise to them, and they said it in a threatening matter. So, instead, he went to the other big studio, WB, and got them to buy the franchise under Nickelodeon. Shortly after the deal is when we start hearing rumors that Game of Thrones showrunners were given the opportunity to helm a Star Wars project and this is why they wanted out of Game of Thrones. In the end, they rushed the series and hacked it to pieces and left what was once a great show a smoldering mess. And then 6 months after the damage is done, Benioff and Weiss are let go from the Star Wars deal. Seems to me that Disney was behind that mess on purpose to try and sabotage the one huge franchise they don't control. And they won.

I wasn't all that into midichlorians or Jar Jar Binks in Episode I, but I also loved the pod race, and it still has the best lightsaber duel of all time. I actually agree. The Prequels have been somewhat underappreciated until now, and a lot of the fans hated on George for a long time because of things like Jar Jar Binks in the prequels, while drowning out everything the did so well. I bet George didn't feel comfortable making the sequels on his own because he no longer trusted himself to make a good movie, fearing backlash the same way he did with the prequels. Now look where things have ended up. Disney has done the unthinkable, not by just making a bad Star Wars movie, but they successfully destroyed everything that happened in the entire SIX ORIGINAL MOVIES in the span of a single movie. Unless Disney Star Wars is somehow made non-canon or The Rise of Skywalker turns out to be amazing and fixes everything (who knows, Disney could have turned themselves around and listened), I don't think Star Wars will ever be the same. Star Wars was Lucas's passion project, and even the prequels showed how his heart, soul, and mind went into making true tour de forces of movies.

@@njsullyalex2744 Sure. But this wave of fan guilt, where one half is writhing in self flagellation and the other half pointing fingers at other fans they say are to blame is just as sad. As hard as it is to accept, the prequels...well, they fell short almost universally for critics, fans, non-fans, even George's Hollywood peers and industry professionals. The only clear exception being the actual audience George claimed he was targetting - the kids. Yes, some fans AND critics went too far expressing their distaste - we've seen that again with the sequels - but ultimately, how George feels about his movies now is really up to him. If he doesn't feel he could have done them better, then perhaps he really has done the right thing here by bowing out, but if he DOES...well, he really owed it to everyone, including himself, to helm the sequel films himself (or with whatever team or arrangement he felt would result in the best outcome) regardless of anyone's opinion on his capabilities and reputation. The "fans" are not the bad guys in this story.

@@whythatspreposterous That makes a lot of sense. I wonder what such sequels would have turned out like had George made them on his own, whether they would have been masterpieces or not and whether or not they would have shared the prequel's issues. I absolutely think fan pressure had an impact on him selling it to Disney, and I think the unfortunate thing here is George expected Disney to follow his view of what Star Wars should be, where Disney instead threw his definition of Star Wars out the window and changed it into something else, arguably something it shouldn't be.

Typical “Hollywood” -all flash, no substance. That’s why George did his own thing to begin with. That’s why Empire is considered the best “episode”, because it was about George’s creativity to do the sequel his way! Lucas is a creator, the William Shakespeare of our era in my opinion. (I know that’s a stretch, but in comparison to other movie makers...) Since Walt died, Disney only wants to make a profit the easiest way they can. And their formula is simply to repackage the same garbage, polish it up, and release it to the masses for consumer consumption while laughing all the way to the bank! But OG Star Wars fans are far more sophisticated and intelligent than the average, run of the mill “Frozen” fan! We go to the box office expecting a continuing saga of an incredibly established universe and canon. To be “force” fed (pun intended) a bunch of PC garbage wrapped in effortless Adobe CG “magic” was a complete slap in the face!

So....I’m 58, and if I go sell something I love to someone else and they mess it up, guess what? I’m responsible, because it’s no longer mine but theirs. Now if i want to keep the thing the way I want it, I don’t sell it, either I keep it in the family, or... I give it to someone who I know for sure, will continue my vision and contractually bind them to that. George has been in this business for decades and he knows the business he’s in; he needs to blame himself for his naivety. On top of which, he was aware of the vagaries of the contract,. Whose to blame for not knowing the contract? You all blame Disney, you know what, love em or hate em, they’re a business, so was Lucas Film. I’m neither here nor there about Disney, I love some of their stuff and I hate some of their stuff. They own Star Wars, all the rights and so on. Who is responsible for that? George Lucas....blame him. Maturity is accepting responsibility for our mistakes!
@CmoreChap
@CmoreChap 4 жыл бұрын
I am same age as you and feel the same. George was responsible in the end. Come on he had no idea what might happen the way he sold it, after being so precious for so long, who knew what the public hoped for so well he butchered the first films 'patching' Special Edition, he who thought it necessary to have Greedo shoot first and yet allow the detorioration of the originals stock without digitizing them in their original state? Who left the keys with K. Kennedy? GL made the mistake of doing the prequels when every Star Wars fan then, wanted sequels first when the main actors were still in their prime, thats why the prequels idea was initially received so disappointedly. Most SW fans wanted to see the extended universe such as the ideas from the books on screen. To see Han and Leia's force able twins, to contend with cloned Emperors and Admiral Thawn. Instead we got Jar Jar, GL didn't learn from the silliness of the Ewoks. GL was never a great film Director but was a good ideas man, dedicated technical innovator, great producer; GL was awful at dialogue, weak on directing actors, myopic about his own ideas quality and to whom they are intend (kids vs adults films), a tendency to more smaltz than Speilberg. Also, lets not forget that for a large percentage of the current Star Wars audience have never seen the original cuts as released, those films were the ones I saw back to back once in a cinema (would you want watch the sequels back to back?), those were the films that along with Alien and Blade Runner defined our youth to adulthood, so I guess they can't understand when we feel GL, KK, JJ, RJ and Disney took a hugh one on our memories, our loyalty and were all the wrong people to honor the heiritage of the first films for which I will alway be truely grateful to George Lucas for creating and seeing made. Just consider what might have been if the folks who did Mandalorian had create the sequels? For me I will always see the last 3 movies in the same vein as the sequel Predator and Alien movies, sad so sad, such missed opportunites, an indictment on the current Hollywood system, ultimately Non-cannon waiting for the show scene where Chewy steps out covered in Head and Shoulders smoking a damp joint and growls to Han zonked out on a couch nearby who blearily replies "Yeah Chewy you smell better now, but #@k& that weed you found hidden in that droid gave me some real trippy dreams" "GRRRew??" "Nah you really don't want to know, really you don't! Like luke doing weird stuff on some island with blue milk straight from source and someone forgot to give you a medal for some reason" "MMMeEEWWW" " They didn't?! Well jez Chewy why didn't you say something to me back then?" "GRRRR" "Okay Okay! I am sorry I should have noticed myself alright, fuzzball you know I would have only well you know Leia and all !"

The prequels come out. Hostility on a massive level insures. Lucas sells to Disney about 7 years later. Disney creates their trilogy. Fans hate it. Has no one realized that he probably would not have been sold so quickly to Disney had the fan reaction against the prequel trilogy been so damn harsh. (Which I cannot to this day figure out what that was all about. The only complaint I could have is dialogue....and as Ford once said of it.....) Gonna quote a very little known cartoon in this day and age....strangely from Disney from the 90's....Gargoyles. Demona betrays her clan. She tricks her love Goliath to chasing after the vikings, in the hopes of saving her clan. She realizes her clan has been shattered during the raid. She sees her love in stone hibernation at night. And her words were...... "What have I.......what have THEY done to you!!!" Not one fan, aside from possibly myself have no want, will, or desire to take partial responsibility for the selling of Star Wars to Disney. As George himself said (paraphrasing) why would I make more movies for people to hate me over? There has not been a Star Wars movie I have not liked, loved, enjoyed. Not one so far. All but The Rise of Skywalker sit on my shelf. I can watch them together, or in their trilogies, or as a stand alone film. The thing I do, that seemingly no one else does is enjoy the film I am watching. All are really good films. And most, in my mind are masterpieces of the film industry. Yeah things are inconsistent in plot. But bear in mind the plot of the first six had enough time for me to go from a mid age CHILD (I was 6 in 1984) to having a child of my own who was 5 in 1999. And he now has a child who is 4 in the Release of Rise of Skywalker. My biggest thing with Star Wars is not whether it adheres to the Mythology or cannon 120%. I got to enjoy the originals myself. I got to enjoy the prequels with my son. And now I get to enjoy the sequels with my son and granddaughter. THAT is the biggest point of Star Wars that everyone keeps missing. Pass on what you have learned. (To me it is the enjoyment of the films)

Remember when the news first broke out that Disney bought Star Wars? Everyone was saying they had bad feeling about it, but then millions fell for the recycled cash grab that was The Force Awakens.... Honestly I cant understand people who say that Disney would have ruined Star Wars only after they had seen The Last Jedi, when TFA already was such huge waste of time.....it set the stage for this shitty as third trilogy....But apparently Disney's careful calculations to kiss the arse of original trilogy fanatics paid off with that recycled New Hope bullshit...and thats what Disney is still doing even today with their live action remakes, doing nostalgia flicks, because we have seen time and again how nostalgia flicks pay off in Box Office... So ye I 100% agree with Lucas on the fact that TFA was trash as it didnt bother to take the franchise into bold new directions, but after the hate for prequel trilogy tried to play the safest possible route with its story and setting. What we basicly got was New Hope 2.0 with Rebels and Empire.....sorry, I meant Resistance and First Order.... Lucas was absolutely right that this new trilogy should have introduced new places with entirely new storylines, cause for better or worse thats what Lucas atleast tried to do with his prequel trilogy.

I think you put it best. Unfortunately, their actions may have also hurt Rian Johnson. I don't want to be "that guy", but his vision didn't fit into the 8th part of a 9 part saga. Had they waited and allowed his narrative innovation to take palce in ab entirely new saga in the SW universe, one unconnected to the current canon/story, it may have been great. I respect his artistic vision, I really do, but it's a shame that A) it had to happen during and throw off an 8/9 part saga and 40 years of fandom, and B) that it was wasted where it should not have been used, an act that has forever hurt the man and his future artistic endeavors. Finally, as much as I love having various creative minds, the sequels should have had one primary writer and vision - whether it be from Lucas or someone else. And with that, though I don't think they should have had to strictly adhere to it, George's model should have been a back bone of sorts for the sequels, after which Disney could take it in their own direction (though I'd much rather Lucasfilm have primary control if that is not/was not the case).

I myself would describe Johnson's strengths differently. He made a visually stunning film. The questions his script raised were engaging and important. The possibility of the Jedi being corrupt and Luke sealing himself off from the galaxy are amazing and worthy of a film. Unfortunately, Johnson's script and follow-through of these ideas, in the words of RLM, "failed spectacularly at every level." Last Jedi should have been a great movie, but with its missteps and bad script, instead caused the franchise to implode.

At the end of the day, this mess is ultimately George Lucas' fault. First of all he should've never sold Star Wars to Disney, period. He could've easily hired his own people to do all the heavy lifting while he oversaw the project as the "final decider". Second, he sold Star Wars for what I consider peanuts. $4 Billion for the greatest movie franchise of all time when you can make that nowadays in 2 or 3 movies??? And finally, George Lucas could've EASILY insisted in the contract agreement with Disney that as long as he's alive, he would have final say in the creative direction of the franchise. He could've also easily insisted that a condition of sale would be that they HAD to use his scripts for Episodes 7, 8 & 9 and any changes made to them would HAVE to be approved by him... But he didn't. He sold too low and signed off ALL CREATIVE CONTROL. Disney took Lucas to the cleaners and that's his and his lawyers' fault. It really eats me up inside seeing what Star Wars has become and knowing George Lucas will soon leave this earth with this pain in his heart. Disney has shown a complete lack of respect to one of the greatest, ever. SAD!

"There's nothing new". I think I said this verbatim when I first saw TFA too. I didn't realize that Lucas had actual intentions of continuing the saga with another trilogy, and even had a story outlined. I really thought Ep. VI was the definite end. It really should be. I just figured the Sequels were Disney making good on the cash cow they invested in. It would be interesting to know what Lucas had in mind for the Sequels, because what we got just proves they were pointless. "There's nothing new" because there was no more story to be told.

As much as I thought Force Awakens was a decent movie, having Rey easily defeat Kylo in a saber duel was a bad move, especially in retrospect after the Last Jedi and it highlights the sequels biggest issue for me: there is no solid villain and no real conflict. Not even a morally grey villain, there's just simply no character that's a strong villain in the sequel trilogy. A strong villain also doesn't have to be physically imposing, as Moff Tarkin wasn't this giant imposing man but he had power signified by his nonchalant use of the Death Star on Alderaan. As much as Disney/Lucasfilm tries to paint Kylo as the big bad, it was all ruined in force awakens as previously stated. In comparison to the original trilogy while yes the empire suffer a defeat in the first movie, it was a close call and basically involved a suicide run down the trenches and it was almost by mere chance and the force that the rebels won that battle. Luke doesn't even attempt a one on one lightsaber duel and just has fleeting moments of using the force. It would be like if Luke Skywalker picks up a lightsaber for the first time and absolutely wrecks Darth Vader in a lightsaber duel in the very first movie. Doesn't matter if Darth Vader survives the fight, he would ultimately be seen as weak and unimposing--ultimately ruining Darth Vader as a character. Much like Kylo now.

You know, I wonder, if George had been granted full creative control of the sequel trilogy, how would it relate to the Extended Universe that many of us have come to adore? It's not (or it wasn't) A-level canon, but everything in the Extended Universe was signed off on by George and he even made some creative choices himself, so it still has the rank of 'canon'. Would George have just completely hauled away everything he had given his seal of approval to and just started from scratch?

I'm pretty sure Lucas' treatments would have only divided Star Wars fans even more. What TFA did so well was unify fans new and old with something that was fun, easy to follow, and classic Star Wars. I’m going to add my two cents to this discussion, though I know it’s not going to be popular. I love the Prequels, I practically grew up with the films, they have so much detail and you can tell that a lot of love went into them. The Original Trilogy are classic, they’re amazing, and tie in nicely with the feel of the Prequels. As for the Sequels: I found the Force Awakens too unoriginal to feel like a sequel. However I do like The Last Jedi, it has a different visually it feels different and unique from the rest of the franchise. The theme-work in it the movie is beautiful, despite it’s awkward flaws. However, the Sequel Trilogy lacks something to it. I can’t place my finger on it, but sometimes about it is gone, it doesn’t quite feel Star Wars, it feels weird. Though there are the same ships, droids, lightsabers, icons, characters, its missing that flare.

I remember in either 1997 or 1998 when Star Wars trilogy was re-released to cinemas and I had to see every one. I owned the VHS trilogy but I wanted to see them in theaters (they came out 1 month apart starting in January ending in March). The new CGI stuff George Lucas added was bad, but I still loved the movies and got me excited for EPISODE 1 coming in 1999. Episode 1 I loved at the time, because I was able to experience a NEW Star Wars story. Sure my friends and I would make fun of Jar-Jar Binks, but even with some of the boring Politics, the world-building was just interesting. I just felt captivated by the World he would create with these characters... so I still saw Episode 2 and Episode 3, not liking them as much as the original Trilogy but RESPECTING THEM. The Force Awakens comes out... my friends walk out extremely underwhelmed, it was odd. We loved the look and sound of (most of) it, we just thought the story was kind of repeating itself from A New Hope... but if I DARED talk bad about TFA on KZbin comments OH MAN did I get attacked for it. The Last Jedi comes out... I started off loving it with the intro battle with the bombs. Also how it was feeling like something new again and not a repeat... THEN the movie ends by killing off an iconic character (and nearly making him a villain by almost killing Kylo Ren while he sleeps), but ALSO leaving me with NOTHING to go off of with the new characters Rey and Finn. So now we got the FINAL EPISODE coming out, and I still have no clue who Rey is. Why was she so powerful and didn't need Training in Episode 7? What is her mission? What is she really looking for? WHY IS SHE EVEN HERE? WHAT IS SHE DOING? Why isn't FINN a Jedi too? Atleast FINN has an interesting backstory with being a Stormtrooper, he atleast has some reason to be a Jedi... he had the will to LEAVE the First Order and fight for Good. HE CHANGED which is hard to do... atleast he has some reason to be a Jedi. REY is completely pointless and she is the MAIN CHARACTER.

lucas was greatly vindicated by the recent trilogy. the last jedi was so terrible..it raised the bar for hollow filmmaking. and i dont mean the players, camera or victims.. its totally a basic planning problem. the disnet reich simply doesnt have the thoughts, vision or heart to spin the series. its very hard to write a great story. its not cheese wiz.. its a human achievement. they claim to have made another billion dollars. but it tasted bad. sludge. not bright. i would obviously be the best person to work on it. because i love the achievements but lothed the failures. i have other stuff in the genera.. a new and different series.. yes all over again. but i loke the lucas vision too. its not like you can replace camalot.. i just have more universes.. and miss the joy of the series.

Omg iger says George doesnt understand the pressure they were under to deliver star wars films?? Um George put out 6 films he was under enormous pressure u know bc he created them. In fact he was under so much pressure with the first one he lost his voice was in the hospital for exhaustion and bc he didnt want 20th century fox to own star wars George had to borrow a ton of money from the bank to finish it bc 20th century said theyd finish it if they got to own it plus the merchandise. So George's got everything on the line & if star wars failed he owed the bank a lot of his own money. The man is a genius he had the vision to create this world & know that merchandise would be huge b4 star wars their wasnt merchandise tied to movies. Also george donated to charity the entire 4.5 billion dollars he got from selling star wars. I wish more people knew that.

George Lucas: Disney, your direction for the sequel trilogy is a mistake! Disney: From my point of view, the prequel trilogy was a mistake! George Lucas: THEN YOU ARE LOST!

Say all you want about George’s competence (or none at all) But at least he made risk Albeit not all of them worked but we got 2 good Cartoons (03 clone wars and 08 clone wars) Fans took it for granted and now they hate the new trilogy 🤦‍♂️

THANK YOU!!! I said it to my friends that GL was going to regret selling it to Disney when it happen and look at SWs now!!! What shame for it to end like this!

Disney, quite simply, took over Star Wars from the 'creator' the guy who knows how the universe works and entrusted to Kathleen. They promptly, went their own way entirely, and have since lost 80% of their fan base - Great idea, well done Disney!! :/ What is INCREDIBLY SAD, is that Mark Hamill wants NOTHING to do with SW and neither does Harrison Ford - Ryan could have put ALL the old cast into one shot, he COULD have! What a shame, we will never, see all of them in the same shot, on film again!
