0:00 Introduction: Liquids while fasting
1:00 What does it mean to break your fast?
1:45 Dietary fat burns before stored body fat
2:15 What can you drink while fasting?
Consuming anything that causes a spike in insulin will break your fast. This is important to know while you’re doing intermittent fasting.
Some beverages can trigger an insulin spike and immediately stop your fasting benefits.
Keep in mind that consuming something that's 100% fat will not break your fast. This is because fat does not spike insulin on its own. However, consuming more dietary fat will deprioritize the burning of body fat. So if you’re goal is to lose weight, consume less fat while fasting.
Fiber will also not spike insulin because your body can’t digest and utilize fiber.
Let’s take a look at what you can and can’t drink during your fasting window.
What to drink and not drink during fasting:
1. Water: Yes
2. Water + apple cider vinegar: Yes
3. Water + lemon juice: Yes
4. Diet soda: No
5. Black coffee: Yes
6. Bullet-proof coffee: Maybe (may slow weight loss)
7. Coffee with cream: Maybe (if you’re using heavy cream)
8. Bone broth: No
9. Green and herbal teas: Yes
10. Coconut water: No
11. Coconut milk: Maybe (in small amounts)
12. Pre-workout (BCAA): No
13. Alcohol: No
14. Milk: No
15. Electrolytes: Yes (if no added sugar or unhealthy sweeteners)

@@timothyandrewnielsen 68 inches tall. in my 50s. I followed Dr. Berg instructions on healthy keto and IF. I did purchase his book. I think the thing that may have helped was that I quit the cardio bootcamp craze, which is the exercise program that I used previous to Dr. Berg exposure. I keep reviewing his videos, even today, to keep me on a good path. After dropping the weight, I now enjoy cardio twice a week. Still using fat burning exercise as my daily routine.

I found not being too hard on myself the first couple of full day fasts helped me learn what it was like not to be eating my normal foods/ schedule. I still made a bit of progress. Then when my break through to really start feeling better happened after some omad days, that was my incentive to prep for full day fasting with having on hand the things I could drink. Be warey of getting light headed. Minerals in the water help a lot there. I am actually midway through my first ever 3 day fast and feeling very satisfied with myself. Go team!! ( I could be drinking more but bladder issues are making me not drink quite as much while out and about. )

I agree, my thought is you need to ease yourself into the no carb or very low carb by removing the obvious what I call the big carbs, pasta, bread, rice, and potatoes then move on to the more hidden carbs which Dr. Berg has pointed out in various videos. The same goes for sugar, get rid of the obvious and move on to the hidden sugars and/or at least recognize some of the substitutes.

But this is a rare moment in my life, to where I actually agree with everything this doctor is saying, I have a master's in food science studying for my PhD currently. I have homeschool and a million other things keeping me busy, yet I have time to do some reading. My mom is prediabetic. Her nutritionist looked at her diet and said it's a mystery as to why she can't lose weight. It took me two seconds. She eats a lot of grains. Granola bars, cereal, etc. All food deemed healthy previously.

Me too. I started may 28 2022 just trying it because a friend did it. I thought it was more fun to try for a few days. After 3 serious days of not eating until 2pm, I started to feel the effects. I kept that going for two weeks. Lost 8 pounds, had an incredible energy. This made me naturally want to eat better foods, all the time, because crap foods made me feel terrible when I went down to eating once a day. I found a diet that my body absorbed and digested very efficiently. Ironically enough: adjusting to this have me incredible energy. I also lift weights, and adjusting my protein intake (8 egg whites a day, along with a half a pound of lean meat) my muscles are not only getting bigger but they’re lean and efficient and look much better

@@esem3511 there is no formula. Sometimes I eat between 11-2 in the day. Sometimes I go the whole day without eating. Sometimes I have two different dinners, one at 5pm and again at 7:30. Keep in mind it’s WHAT you eat. A subway sandwich once a day is going to actually cause you to become I’ll. I’m eating steaks, fish, 7-10 eggs a day, giant salads with a ton of greens and other vegetables, I eat almost 0 cars just because I don’t care about getting them. You’re going to have to figure out what works for you. I workout a lot, so if I need to eat I do. I also make sure to do two 24 hour fasts a week (usually Monday and Thursday) but the food I eat around that is incredibly nourishing

You may also find like I have and many others, that the snacks and the cookies and all that are not a temptation because your taste buds change with the healthier foods that you eat. And they just don't taste good anymore The temptation goes away. It's quite awesome! Remember just because somebody calls it keto doesn't mean it is. Marketing has gotten a hold of the word keto, you have to read your labels. Learn all the different types of words that is used for sugar. Just because it's organic cane sugar doesn't mean you should have it. Sugar is still sugar.

Thank you Dr Berg! I am in the transition between an old really unhealthy carb diet to keto and I'm making a fair few of these mistakes/not seeing results and being discouraged. It's a long road to getting out of old habits/cravings for carbs but I'm determined and going to get there! I often rewatch these videos to re-solidify the lessons/importance of no cheat days etc etc. Big thank you from Melbourne AUS.

Your cortisol spikes in the morning, so it's probably best to hold off on the coffee until at least 9am. Having coffee before that will tend to have the reverse perceived effect, and it's probably why people tend to drink multiple cups a day. This may sound similar to sugar, because it is, from a perceived energy standpoint. The reason why fasting in the morning works so well is because your body prepares you to fast until you find food, since Ugg and Ogg didn't have refrigerators.

Interesting. I only have my first cup of coffee after 9 since lockdowns last year. I had to get up really early to get to the office before and used to rock up at work just after 7 which was always a killer.

Thank you!! Both my husband and I will feel tired again at 10AM , about 2 hours after getting up , along with coffee. I thought coffee was making us sleepy (even at night) because we make a pot with 5 scoops instead of 10-12. Tomorrow, we'll try holding off. He goes right for it.

hey doc, thanks for this video! it's just in time. I introduced IF (16:8) to my keto diet about 3 weeks ago and I've been drinking nothing but water during the fasting period. the taste (or lack of it) has gotten a bit boring. it's good to know that I can now add "some flavours" to the water by using ACV or natural lemon juice. cheers!

Great drinks for breaking our fast during Ramadhan: drinking water plus apple vinegar or grape vinegar! I live in Jakarta. So, I start to fast around 04:30 and break my fast around 18:05. To break my fast, when my stomach is empty, I drink a glass of drinking water into which I added some apple vinegar or grape vinegar several seconds before I drink it. Then, I drink it up and wait for ten minutes. After that, I eat some oats or bread. I have diabetes. However, by doing this way, I have no problem with high blood sugar. Moreover, I feel very fresh and much more fresher if compared with my drinking other liquids, such as regular fresh water or juice.

I stumbled upon Dr. Berg while doing research on fighting cancer. I have lost 2 grandparents to colon cancer. My dad had kidney cancer then remission, then it came back in his lymph nodes and eventually his brain and it killed him too. His younger sister died from cancer many years ago and his older sister was able to beat breast cancer. After having just turned 40 I wanted to be proactive. I’m not here to lose weight as mine has always been healthy but, I have started keto and IF. I feel it’s a necessary lifestyle change for longevity. Thank you for all your research and sharing it Dr. Berg. I only wish more people believed in it over the oncologists that want to subject you to tons of toxicity and don’t even mention a healthy diet.

I'm so glad black coffee is a yes. I used to drink probably close to 10 cups a day which obviously wasn't very healthy, but a little bit ago I decided to turn my life around and now I'm down to 4 cups on a bad day so that's a massive improvement. Still some work to do there and I'd love to get it down to 2 cups max but I can't expect to just go cold turkey on everything if I want the changes to actually stick longterm so this is fine for now.
