@dustcommander1002 жыл бұрын
I'm with the other commenters who think the hissing sound is a switched mode power supply. Could be how the ECM makes the 5V reference, but it could also be how the ECM makes all the power used internally (I don't know what other voltages it uses). That's just how power is handled these days. Sometimes the noise is an issue, sometimes it's just normal and just wasn't noticeable before. It would be cool to put the scope on the 5V reference and see how much ripple is on it. In the non-automotive world, high ripple voltage is one of the failure modes of this type of power supply - and if the computer runs on 5V, it would be very confusing to the computer if there was a lot of AC ripple there. Very interesting diagnosis, and so cool that you had a spare! Just consider how many ECM's are out there, and how lucky it is that you had a partially compatible one!

Good evening Ivan. During last week. I've been driving about 300 miles total to diag a 2013 explorer would not start after the owner disconnected the battery to his truck. He was doing other repairs and playing it safe. After he got done. He reconnected the battery and no crank and no start.?? On the first run. We discovered a broken encoder ring. Luckily he had bought one. We installed it and cleared codes. No luck. Still dead. ?? Engine fail to start message During my scan. I did some more research. My Dependable launch scanner would not allow me to go into the bcm to see why or how many keys are available. With my tail between my legs. I head home. Now back to research. I find a program call Forscan for Ford vehicles to code keys and code modules. I order it. Tell the owner. I have another car I'm finishing up. As soon as it done. Bring the truck up. 2 days ago I get the truck. I load my laptop to the truck. I'm allowed into the system. I see the bcm is there and online but I see no keys programmed?? I try programming the old keys. Nope. Truck says keys are already programmed?? I sleep on it. Next morning. I buy 2 new keys and get them cut. I successfully program 2 new keys. Still no start. ??? A youtuber says similar thing happened to him..says bought a new module. Just like you taught me about powers and grounds. I recheck things. I go back into the bcm module. All info is still there.?? I Ask myself a question. Maybe the bcm went to safe mode by shutting itself down?? I go back to the bcm and initialize the module. This entire process I'm at 4 hours into the diag. And then the final test. Truck starts. I test the old key and it still works good. I'm very very new to this kornputer stuff. I sure learned alot from you sir. The next day my wife's niece shows up with her Taurus. I also get 2 new keys after the dog ate the remote😄😄. So..this Forscan program cost me next to nothing. I can work on ford vehicles after I buy the extended liscense. I'm super happy and my customer is pleased too. Next on my plate is any 07 silverado. Crank no start. I'm getting spark but Injectors are not firing. Wish me luck. It's another 2 hour trip to and from. I'm donating my time to help and elderly couple. 😄😄 and I'm 67 now..

Oddly enough I just recently purchased a PCM from FS1. I gave them the VIN# (for a 98 Wrangler Sport) and expected a working unit. What I got was something completely different! I made 5 phone calls and sent pics before they would accept a return. I then tried to purchase one from a Jeep dealer. It was discontinued (not a big surprise) but I did get a part number based on my VIN and it was NOT the part number/PCM FS1 sent me! Then when I told them the part they had sent was wrong (as per Jeep) they tried deducting an $85 "restocking fee" from my refund! I will NOT do business with them again.

Great title and great diagnostic! That hissing on the ECM sounds a lot like an internal switchmode power supply being overstressed by excessive drain (+5V?) - maybe that's what made the original ECM make the "pop" sound customer mentioned. I would be careful when the replacement ECM is installed - could be an intermittent short on +5V. Very curious for Part 2 :-)
@jessicav20312 жыл бұрын
Shouldn't every automotive electronics device be tolerant of a short on the output? Just like every pin should tolerate being shorted to battery? It might fail to function properly until the short is resolved but it shouldn't cause damage. I thought that was the standard.

Ivan. CHANGE THE THROTTLE BODY TOO. The hissing sound is likely caused by the ECM constantly adjusting the throttle body position. The throttle body will eventually fry the new ECM. I'm sure you know that Nissan's of this era are notorious for the throttle bodies blowing ECMs all the time. If you don't replace the throttle body with a NEW one (not used, not refurbished, sometimes refurbished short out the ECM too) your going to blow the ECM too. It's happened to me lots of times. When I started diagnostics I blew four replacements ECMs on a Murano. Lessons learned. Scope the throttle wires. It could me that, or it could be something else. It's wise to do some checks before replacing the ECM.

I'm curious about the 5v system! I'd like to put an amp clamp around the 5v ref wire, or even unplug the ecm and ohm-check the harness to ground. Should be a very high resistance ckt that only supports milli-ohms of current, right? Also, with the bad ecm, you could use your own external power supply to bring the circuit back to 5v and see if the original computer will work again! Either way, and based on the other comments about the ecm's sizzling sound, it sounds like you'll be tracing down a 5v issue in the harness, I'm guessing related to the clutch explosion/changeout. Can't wait!

Meaning that ECM may even be fixable if only the capacitors went bad.

Hey Ivan. I don't know if this may apply for all cars with that steering angle sensor but I found that when I was working on my vw rabbit and the battery gets disconnected that light will come on for that steering angle. I never bothered to calibrate it with my scanner as I found out it usually turns itself off after driving it for a bit. So it seems know and the light just turns off. Hopefully you don't have to keep using a scanner for those.

That sound is coil whine it's common in computers and laptops. Never seen it in cars though.

It's probably the busted crank sensor of melted wires . That's fun to get to

Remove passenger tire and liner. It's right there. Cam sensor, yeah different story.

My 06 is like what Mark said. Remove front passenger tire. For more room with extra work, remove the plastic splash shield. Cam sensors are more difficult and they have "push in" to release connector.

Rhetorical question - although all of these modules and networks allow modern vehicles to balance performance, emissions and fuel economy, what happens to those of us that keep them 10+ years when hardware and software is no longer available?

'Clutch in to start' problem since he worked on that system? Since the automatic ecm lets it start it would not recognize that interlock? WAG.

This had the trans messed with - chances are someone pinched a wire on re-install. Short to ground now. Or they left off an earth. I'd be looking at the trans area for wires messed with/wires shorting off exhaust, wires chafing as not re-attached properly. Nissan electrics are finickity - faults in one place show up elsewhere.

Can you please share with me how you got that lower bolt off the ecm? 😩 I’ve tried for hours and my hands are all cut up, any tricks?
@PineHollowAutoDiagnosticsАй бұрын
A small 1/4" ratchet with 10mm socket does the trick. You can move the fuse box out of the way a bit. I never put that stupid lower bolt back in haha

I had one of these trucks, the overheating on mine was caused by a bad radiator cap - they are considered a consumable and only last about 30,000 miles. 🤦♂

Ivan, my friends mini van Vauxhall 2002 does not want to start over 1 year now, they fix it and its ok for about 1 month and then again it does not want to start, then again they fix it and again 1 month later is dead and this cycle still continues for about 1 year now. Its horrible.

To me, 5:15-7:15 is completely redundant. I know they teach guys that way in tech school, but seriously.... if you test powers and grounds AT THE MODULE and everything's good, then you know for a fact that everything upstream (fuses, relays, etc.) is just fine. I don't see the point of doing it in reverse order like this, especially when the module is right there in your face easy to access. Possible exception could be made for intermittent problems, which this wasn't.
