I had an idea for a really stupid campaign: the Honorable Samurai. Basically, you can only conquer enemy settlements if it is not their last settlement. If it is their only settlement, you must vassalise them instead.

Glad to see that you continued with Shogun 2 again, I have a tip that you can try out in some other campaign you do: When you get the message about naban trade, you should accept because it will give you a matchlock and an OPTION to build the port, it doesn't make you build it, therefore, you pretty much get a free matchlock.

Naginata Samurai are stronger than Yari Samurai in general, they got better armor and damage and beat them 1v1, Yari Ashigaru also beat Yari samurai using Yari wall and are much cheaper, you can field much more Ashigaru than Yari quicker and also using them well beat army that outnumber you. Like Dunkey said there isn't much point in making Yari samurai your better off with Naginata or yari Ashigaru or even Naginata Warrior monk if you want spear unit. But infantry vs Infantry Katana is best. Yari Samurai are decent but you can use other units that does the same job but better

I would say that the Bullet Proof Samurai would count. They are a type of Yari samurai right? So i think you should be allowed to use them.

They are, but that defeats the purpose of the challenge. I only want to use the trash unit that is Yari Samurai, if I used Bulletproof Samurai I would be using one of the best units in the game.

I actually like to have a unit or two of yari samurai to protect my Generals. I use their speed when the enemy breaks trough my yari walls or flanks before I can get the yari walls repositioned and to chase down units when my cav is not around or dead. I wouldn't build an army around them though. I agree that there are better options for the main line.

Hey donkey! I initially always disband my Yari Samurai since in most of your videos, you always disband them right away. But recently in my campaign as the Uesugi, I've decided to recruit them because not all the time, I can put my units on Yari Wall formation. Also since speed, flexibility, and outflanking are key to winning battles for me. And yeah, I always want to go in for the kill against my enemy's generals as soon as possible. Yari Samurai are giving me wins on my battles. Like in my full stack, I would have like 2 to 3 Yari Samurai ready.

The AI is incredibly easy to take advantage of in this game,once you understand it. Using the drag strategy is essential when up against large armies. In sieges,you can lure out one unit at a time by charging in and retreating down the ramp into the loving arms of a yari AG wall lol on open fuild I like to take a few yari AG units from my main body,and use my general as bait to drag out one or 2 units at a time from the enemy main body. It's time consuming,but highly effective if you want to avoid taking damage to your whole army at the expense of a few.

I never really thought of the cannons as bad but I suppose there are other things that do the same job as it. I have always used them to force the enemy into attacking me instead of sitting there with infinite patience. I also don't play on legendary so there is that too.

Glad to see you back to Shogun 2 again. And so mono unit challenge even. But I was wondering; the AIs in my last Vanilla Shogun game - which also the first time I ramp difficulty to Hard mode - went gaga over Nanban Trade Port to the point I owned about 7 of them by the time I finished the game. It forced me to devote several Buddhist Temples/Monk slot just to keep things under control. Is this behavior a staple in Harder difficulty or just pure RNG whether they'll get one or not? I don't think I see much of them in your let's play video, nor did I see it in Normal difficulty.

I don't understand why you hate Yari Samurai...................... They are supposed to be a support unit not line infantry!!!!!! Every 4 Yari Ashigaru Units should be supported by a Yari Samurai unit in the back. From there. Yari Samurai can 1. Protect Yari Walls from Flank attack 2. Protect General in the back 3. Reinforce the line if it is breaking 4. Flank enemy and perform Anvil and Hammer or Kill Missile troops. Yes, They lack the speed of cavalry but they don't have disadvantages of cavalry! They can prolong the charge unlike Yari cavalry.

1) 1v1 against a yari ashigaru they lose if the ashigaru is in yari wall which yari samurai don't even have as an ability 2) 2v1 against 2 yari ashigaru out of yari wall they lose if the ashigaru flank a little bit 3) they cost 3 times as much as a yari ashigaru 4) they reinforce twice or thrice as slowly as yari ahigaru after a battle 5) they require you to waste a building slot to build them while you can build yari ashigaru everywhere yari samurai are truly awful man

1) Not if you just run around the formation (That is why they stopped using this kind of tactics in Europe like 500 years before) and they are not supposed to be passive defense units like Yari Ashigaru or Naginata Samurai. They are more suitable for active defense role. 2) Same can be said for a lot of elite units/specialized units. Hammer and Anvil is powerful. 3) Anything is more expensive than Yari Ashigaru lol. 4) Reinforce rate is by percentage and it is the same if they are in the same province and have same castle/commander. 5) Same can be said for all other unit than 3 Ashigarus. If you said it is awful. What unit you think is the best for "Firefighting" role? Yari Samurai can solve problems better than any of the units.

Question: I also find myself short on money on Legendary. So i always cycle between very high tax and normal tax rate. that gives me about 300-400 extra koku every 2 turns. I know that u suffer a big loss to town growth, but i think that loss is negligible in the long run anyways. I notice that you never employ this strategy of getting money early game, even though you are especially short on money in this challenge. Can you give me your thoughts on why you dont cycle increase taxes early game?

Because it's a cheesy strategy, and I try not to employ cheese tactics. Also, the town growth is definitely noticeable in the long run. You lose 25 town growth every turn while you do that. Say you have 25% taxes in every town, that's 6,25 koku per town per turn you miss out on. Not to mention towns with Metsukes where taxes are far higher.

MrSmartDonkeyLP thanks for the reply. I didn't realize cycle taxes is considered a 'cheesy strategy', lol. I remember watching your old campaigns where you sell military access, i didn't even know that existed, lol. I was astounded at the time. But in your later videos, you pointed out selling military access is like cheating and you stopped doing it, so I stopped doing it as well. I personally only do the cycle taxes for 5 turns or so, due to town growth issues as you pointed out (just enough time for me to take out the key neighbouring provinces). For example in this run, you are short of like exactly 300 koku or so to build the trade port. there would be no problem if you put the tax on very high for the first turn. Do you consider this cheating/cheesy though? I honestly want your opinion because I also want to win as an honorable samurai!

Honestly, it's totally up to you. If I was playing by myself I would probably more likely use cheap strategies like that too. You could say it's not even that cheesy as raising taxes was a common thing to do for governments during times of war. That said, people tend to complain or tell me it's not really a Legendary campaign if I use cheap tactics such as those so I tend to stay away from them, similar to selling military access like you pointed out. I think raising taxes is a lot less dishonourable then selling military access though. As selling military access is a cheap way to make money at no disadvantage to the player and it's something the bordering AI is programmed to accept, whereas raising taxes will eventually have an effect on your citizen's happiness.

Yeah, I had to edit the loading screens because my recording software has been acting up and was pausing during certain parts of the loading screens, so I ended up with desynced audio/video because I record my voice with Audacity. So I had to slow down the loading screen footage and resync it, took a while to get that spot on too :P.

I don't hate Yari Samurai, to be honest. They're good at flanking and charging into the back of the enemy lines being less vulnerable to a counter-charge by cavalry. Their biggest potential lies in "Rapid Advance". Though leveraging mobility is difficult, being able to outmaneuver the enemy by design is *theoretically* a huge advantage.
