I get so many women contacting me who are still not sure if it is the menopause or not, whether they are starting to experience the early symptoms and even how peri-menopause is different from menopause.
So this week on A.Vogel Talks Menopause I thought I would go back to basics and look at this a little bit more, including 5 questions you should ask yourself to help tell if you are in the early stages of menopause.

So many of us are hit blindsided not knowing anything, leaving us alone, venerable, frightened, confused, lost, crazy, desprate, paraniod, and thinking we are going insane or dying. Just know that you are not alone. Even when you find yourself physically and emotionally alone and nobody understands, listens to, believes in or emphathisies with you. Remember that you belong to a group of courageous, yet frighten, intellegent yet clueless, strong yet fragile women who are experiencing the same symptoms as yòu. Lean on us. As we may need to lean on you.

Hi, I'm 52 bp1, anxiety, depression, along with chronic foot pain from old sports injury going thru Perimenopause has been absolute horrible. Headaches, sleep is off, and a lot more. I would not wish this on anyone. Very Horrible. I try to hide it and fight it but its all kicking my hiny. In survival mode 😳 thank you for the information. My Mom went thru it in her late 40' s. Mine is later. She passed away 3 years ago at age 84. Miss her now.

I love your videos because they truly do help to put a persons mind at ease. I do believe I’m in the peri menopause stage due to the heavy bleeding and I feel bloated and vaginal dryness and I been having stress and mood swings I’m assuming that comes along with the change. I do wish my mother would have been able to discuss this with me but she has passed away almost 6 yrs ago. So thank you for all your videos ♥️

Thank you for your much needed advice.... I had loads of symptoms, went to a Dr and she totally dismissed what I was saying.... As women we don't need that, we need to be listened to and have the right treatment...went to my own Dr, he gave me anti depressants which made me 100 times worse with anxiety! So went to another Dr, at last she listened and thankfully gave me hrt!! I was 49, had irregular periods, mood swings, brain fog, feeling hot, anxiety, not sleeping, can't tolerate certain situations, whereas before i did etc etc etc..... As women we need to be listened to, in this day and age some of us are not.... I was suffering, thankfully now with hrt I am 99% better, have the odd bad day but if anyone else is suffering, please seek help....don't leave it....

I missed my period for the first time this past month and had been spotting/bleeding lightly for 20 days straight! I had an endometrial biopsy and tested negative. My gynocologist started me on Progesterone and the spotting stopped. She chalked it up as Perimenopause. This has been my only symptom that my body is changing. Btw, I am 53!

Hi Marcy Prolonged bleeding, even if it is light, can cause anaemia which can result in other health issues so it may be a good idea to ask to get your iron levels tested at some point. Good to hear that you have has this checked out by your doctor too which is important!

It is important to go back to your doctor and ask for help, if this is affecting all aspects of your life then it is not normal. I would suggest taking a friend or relative with you next time for extra support. Have a list of all your symptoms and how they are affecting your life to take with you and get your friend to write down everything the doctor says, this often gets better results. You could also check out acupuncture as this can be helpful for most menopause situations.

Hi Thank you for your lovely comments. Missing periods is often one of the first signs of the approach to the menopause but all you can really do at the moment is keep a diary of missed periods and any new symptoms and see if a pattern appears. At this point symptoms can come and go for a while before your periods stop altogether. Best Wishes Eileen

Hi Angelique 39 is still a little young to be starting the menopause although it can happen if other close female relatives started around the same age. Maybe find out if you can and that would give you a clue. Otherwise, all sorts of situations can affect the hormones such as diet, stress, doing extreme exercise, going on a strict diet, taking medication so it's a good idea just to give your lifestyle a check to see if any of these may be a factor. If it's none of these then it is a good idea to see your doctor just to rule out other health issues such as fibroids or polyps or cysts which can often affect periods too. Best Wishes Eileen

Hi Alice, if you have had symptoms for so long it is important to see your doctor. Other health issues can creep in such as low iron, low thyroid function, low vitamin D or B12 and all of these can cause menopause-like symptoms. Your doctor can test for these just to rule them out.

I have just turned 46 . In the last 3 months I have felt like a stranger to myself. I have no confidence, I’m anxious all the time, my memory is awful I am losing interest in my hobbies… zero sex drive. I don’t t recognise myself . I don’t have many physical symptoms however… the odd flush and my period was 10 days late this month. I don’t know what to do. I talked to my gp who seems to think I’m too young for the peri menopause?? And he suggests my depression is coming back. But this feels so different. How can I get my gp to help ?
@AvogelCoUk
@AvogelCoUk 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Shari In our experience, many women start the approach to the menopause in their mid forties; hormones at this time can change very subtly but just enough to cause menopause symptoms. Losing confidence and drive is common in the menopause and many women will go through a phase of wanting to be alone or losing motivation or feeling that they can’t be bothered with anything or anyone! It is part and parcel of the menopause and although it can be really frustrating and unsettling it is often a phase that you work your way out of. The changing hormones can really drain you of energy and one of the ways the body can cope is by shutting down your ‘get up and go’; your body is more than likely telling you that it is tired and needs plenty of rest! If you are not on any other medication you may find the herb Hypericum helpful, this is known to help lift the mood and I recommend it often for the menopause doldrums! You could also add in the Menopause Support which is known to help gently raise oestrogen so may help to lift the mood too. Best Wishes Eileen

My breasts get sore before my period starts. Itchy breast. I'm starting to see spotting .. my appetite is very low. I'm always tired,yet I endure my day. My periods are lasting longer..a full week .normally it was 2-3 days. Is this normal. I'm not irritable. I get really hot at night during sleeping.. such discomfort. Joints aches and pains are starting. I'm excited to age. I'm also sad at the same time. Is this normal. I have no one to talk to about this. I am scared to go to the Dr. I'm not getting vaccinated and being denied medical attention. What suggestions do you have for me.

Hi Hilarie Longer periods are quite common as your hormones start to decrease, however, these can quickly cause anaemia which, in turn, can trigger fatigue, poor sleep, low mood/anxiety and even joint pain! You may find a gentle iron tonic can give you a nice little boost - you can get these from health stores. Best Wishes Eileen

I'm 40 and noticed a significant change in mood when I was about 38/39, then started having night sweats again after not having them for so long with fibromyalgia cos I had started taking medication for it. Now I can have hot sweats, hot flashes and tiredness mostly around my periods which are the same as they have always been except they've gone down from the 5 days of bleeding with major cramps to 3 days with cramps and now 1 day mostly without cramps at all. I can have cramps come at other times throughout the month. Another thing I get around the monthlys is the need to pee straight after I've been to the toilet and I have slight leaking every day after getting up from going to the toilet. I get heartburn around periods and new symptom diarrhea, I can have bouts of paranoia, can't make decisions can't focus at all, and vaginal dryness that can last for like 5 days at a time and then go away. I have dry skin itchy skin, hard nails brittle nails It's driving me mad I think the worst thing is not knowing what's going to strike next.Ps is getting tennis elbow a symptom cos I also have that at the moment lol!

I am sorry to hear that you're struggling with all this just now, unfortunately, conditions such as fibromyalgia can impact on the menopause, making symptoms worse. Have you thought about seeing a practitioner such as a Nutritional Therapist? They can often find out what's going on and formulate a personalised treatment plan for you. Joint aches and pains are common in the menopause but can also be caused by fibromyalgia so it can be difficult to determine what is causing what! Best Wishes Eileen

Hi Kristina Yes, we do know that hormonal changes can affect the skin and getting acne/pimples is quite common! You may find doing some gentle liver work helpful along with drinking lots of plain water as dehydration can be a big factor too. If you are in the UK or Ireland, you could try our Milk Thistle Complex for a couple of months. If you live elsewhere, then taking Dandelion Root or Artichoke can be helpful too. Best Wishes Eileen

Hi Jewel Please do go and see your doctor when you can, any heart or vein pain really needs investigating. It may well just be anxiety and worry causing these symptoms but it is wise to double check. I know it may be difficult to see your doctor just now but why not ask to speak to a practice nurse for some advice on what you should do next. The age you start the menopause can be similar to the age your mother or other close female relatives started. Best Wishes Eileen

Hi Lillian Although frequent periods are quite common in the perimenopause, they are not good for you and can cause anaemia. This in turn can trigger fatigue, poor sleep, anxiety, joint pain, so it is important to get this checked by your doctor. They can also make sure that other issues such as fibroids, polyps/cysts or even a prolapse are not a contributory factor in the bleeding Best Wishes Eileen

I’m glad I found this video ! Thank you. I feel confused too, I’m 52 years old and for the past few months I been noticing changes on my period, they range from 28 to 30 days, used to last 5 days but recently I can go up to 6 days, and sometimes shorter, but then I spot for another 6/8 days after period, is that a sign? Also I’m not on birth control because my ob said I don’t need it but in January I had a chemical pregnancy! … so should I still be on birth control?, I got no other menopause symptoms except for the achy joints, having a hard time sleeping, anxiety and low libido, fatigue. So now I know why because you mentioned it here! My aunt is 57 and still menstruating and my grandma did till her 60s (on father’s side) on my moms I have no clue because I lost my mom at 48, and don’t know much of her side of the family unfortunately. Today I’m worried because I’m 5 days late again 5/2022 and I tested negative for pregnancy. Can you all of a sudden have missed periods even if you been regular?? Is this part of it too? Thank you so much for sharing your information

Hi Maria The age you start the menopause is often hereditary but not always set in stone! Approaching the menopause, periods can change dramatically from month to month such as: long or short, heavy or light, far apart or close together, miss some months or stop quickly and these can happen in any combination - it can be very confusing! We usually advise to continue with birth control until 2 complete years without periods. Best Wishes Eileen

Hi Claire Many women can go months without a period then suddenly get one or more back. This is often caused by issues such as a 'last fling' by your hormones, going on a strict diet, improving your diet or even stress. However, it is also a good idea just to get it checked out by your doctor in case other factors such as fibroids or a prolapse have triggered the bleed. Best Wishes Eileen

I've felt like I have been suffering with increasing perimenopausal symptoms since, but as I have no periods, I am unable to know for sure? I have had a few blood tests to check if I am menopausal.... But as you said, these are not accurate.... Would there be any other way of checking? Or do I have to just keep monitoring for myself? Hi Sari You could try the herb sage as this is known to help with flushes and sweats and a herb called Ashwagandha can be really beneficial for mood. If you are not in the UK the best thing to do is go to your local herb shop and ask for herbs that will help in much the same way; they shouldn't be too hard to obtain. Best Wishes Eileen

Hi Vivian Back ache and kidney pain can often indicate severe dehydration so make sure that you are drinking lots of plain water every day. If this doesn't help quickly, then please do check with your doctor to rule out any kidney infections. Joint pains can often be eased with the herb Devils Claw or you can rub on Arnica Gel. Best Wishes Eileen

Hi Many women go through the menopause with little or no symptoms so this is quite natural. However, you are under the average menopause age so if your periods have stopped it is a good idea to check with your doctor just in case other health issues may be a factor.

Is it true that a woman can get into early menopause (@ 48) because she had her first period @ 10 years old?
@AvogelCoUk
@AvogelCoUk 4 жыл бұрын
Hi There doesn't seem to be any specific link between the two, it is more to do with how many eggs you were born with. The average age to start the menopause is 45-55 so 48 isn't really considered early; an early menopause is usually before 45. Best Wishes Eileen

Hi, I'm 43,is that too young for perimenopause? I have had alot changes in the last 3 years, with weight,skin,hair, periods, anxiety,mood,even things I never had before,nails brittle,dry eyes, sensitive skin on my hands,like feeling a hurt easier,like if u hit ur hand off something,it would hurt more,dry skin, memory , ECT,I mean the doctor seems to over look it,but we know ourselves best,the changes happening.👍

Hi Rebecca The average age is 45-55 but quite a few women start earlier especially if other close female relatives started around the same age. Has your doctor tested you for low iron, low thyroid function, low vitamin D and B12? These can appear in the peri-menopause and all of them can cause a combination of similar symptoms. It may be a good idea to get tested just to rule them out.

Hi, I'm 38 with 5 kids, for the past three months i have not seen my period and I'm really worried. For this past weeks life has not been the same for me, I have been restless, depressed, tired and the worst is that hot flashes I get always. I didn't get to know when my mum had her menopause, cause we never discussed it, and she died some years back. Pls what could possibly be wrong with me?

This can sometimes happen, Angela, and may be due to the way your hormone balance is changing every month. However, if you're worried then it is wise to get this checked out by your doctor. Best Wishes Eileen

@@AvogelCoUk Thanks. Lately the more time pass, the more we are sure it's a menopause. Thanks to your vlog. Menopause symptoms are so frustrating. So identical with many illness symptoms. Our first visit to medical doctor, she diagnosed it as thypoid. She give antibiotic. Second visit to another Medical doctor, she also think it's a recurring thypoid, she also give antibiotic. That antibiotics really destroy all my microbes in stomach. Lost all appetite to eat, can't eat at all. Then we go to Gastroenterologist, he says it's not a thypoid at all. It's just a bloating, from the beginning it's just bloating, but because misdiagnosed by first n second medical doctor, my digestive system become error. He give me some medicine, my digestive system become better, but still bloating. Lately the symptoms more n more, really identical with hypothroid n many serious illness. Really frustrating. Googling a lot, lately we know all the symtoms are menopausal symptoms. Googling KZbin, we found your vlog. Now, after I follow your tips to drink much water, all the symtoms get better. Still suffering, but not as hard as before. Really wish this can end soon. Thank you so much.

Is spotting a week after your regular period a sign of starting menapause? I had brown spotting for 4 days after my period last month... a week after. This month a lot of large clots,and it seems a bit longer. I'm 48 and a half.

Hi Kimberly Changing hormones are often one of the first signs that you are approaching the menopause and you are in the average age range, 45-55. All you can really do just now is keep a note of when you get your periods and what they are like, however, if you keep getting big clots it is wise to check with your doctor too, just to make sure that other issues such as fibroids or a prolapse are not contributing to this. Best Wishes Eileen

@@AvogelCoUk I was diagnosed with a prolapse a couple years ago, could that be an issue? What is done for that? I'm also a little nauseous and have been getting headaches. Should I be worried about cancer?? I've already had breast cancer so I'm pretty paranoid when my body acts off with something else. I do have an appointment next week for a vaginal ultrasound, but I'm pretty nervous it's going to be something awful.
@AvogelCoUk
@AvogelCoUk 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Kimberly Your doctor can just check that the prolapse hasn't shifted further to cause the bleeding. Nausea and headaches are common menopause symptoms and are usually sorted with lots of water, a magnesium supplement and just making sure that your blood sugar levels don't dip. Many women are sent for an ultrasound and usually it is just the doctor being extra cautious and hopefully they will put your mind at rest. Best Wishes Eileen
