As far as the plot goes ANY of the primarchs have a path back into the story if they truly wanted to do it. It's quite possible a few are perpetual and don't know it or didn't until they came back. Also, cloning seems to still be a thing. No solid rules in a fantasy book.

I love how unlike Lorgar he was genuinely reluctant to wage war. It's very evident in Mercy of the Dragon how unique this was: he wasn't the person who said 'oh no, as the son of divinity who crushed my homeworld in holy war, subverted my atheistic legion and worship me as a demigod, I never wanted to do this. I was wronged and forced, my opinion of humanity, the Custodes and my father is so low I will make my warriors massively larger and more vicious to split the Imperium'. Vulkan would understand the idea of being left alone, there was no pretense or distance the other Primarchs have. BL's reliance on Nick Kyme really misses the opportunity to delve into how strange the Salamander's are.

Vulkan and his Legion is a strange case. Beloved by fans but without great novels about them. Seriously now who really loved the writing of Nick Kyme? And he gets them both in 40k and 30k. People love the abstract idea of Vulkan but there is just so little of worth in his written lore.

I wonder if The Emperor also kept him around for himself. His 'human sentiments' were ebbing away, people talk about his ruthlessness and dealing with Angron but I wonder if at this point he was keeping Vulkan with him like a Primarch keeping an Astartes around, or an experiment. He wanted to study what empathy was, perhaps even feel it or try to remember being human as his power grew and the Chaos Gods attacked him more. It's quite tragic really; I don't see it as Vulkan being tested, but The Emperor putting himself through the fire, suffering the cost of his ambition and being around the creation who had the heart he lost.

I think this is the case. Every of his other sons see him as their father, their emperor or their god. Vulkan probably sees him as another human, a person with emotions and the emperor wanted to open up a bit as far as he could and there is no better person who he could do that with with a possible exception is malcador.

On the topic of Vulkan staying with the Emperor for years, many of the other Primarchs landed on planets that were in constant conflict, where as Vulkan landed on Nocturne. The planet and the wildlife are the constant dangers the people faced, except when Dark Eldar would raid settlements. So Vulkan only knew small skirmishes defending his people and not massive conflicts like his brothers experienced.

Curze didn't face mass conflict nor did Magnus nor did fulgrim nor did Manus as far as I know . Also even some like leman and lion only fought wars with crude weapons mostly like swords only and the enemies were NOTHING compared to the horrors they would face .

@@DaniMol Curze learned alot but its nowhere indicated he learnt any war tactics , he was eating thugs , robbers and rapists not war generals. Again I agree on leman and lion fighting wars but those wars were with swords and spears and they were more or less just steamrolling through their enemies . Sword fights and multi planetary war campaigns with different and vastly complex war machines against strange and non human enemies are very different things. Magnus and the emperor spoke about the warp and his plans for the future, I have never encountered any piece of lore indicating the emperor was giving magnus lectures on the art of war on a galactic scale .

Lorgar also did not want to be a warlord. He also saw himself as a builder not a general. Yet the Emperor seems to have been patient with Vulkan and impatient with Lorgar. Why is that?

I think it boils down to he saw the coming war and betrayal he just didn't know exactly how it would play out. Even tzeench can't predict the future perfectly I always thought that chaos pulled a the Ultimate move by corrupting horus I don't think the emperor ever planned for that horus was supposed to be he's right hand he never could have imagined he would turn as apposed to lorgar or angron where it was much more obvious they would turn to chaos

@@DaniMol it can also be theorised that with the Emperor most likely having played through the Heresy multiple time in alternative universes, he had a fair idea as to which primarchs would fall and which would not. But his own foresight isn't perfect either, and unexpected things (such as Angron's mutilation) do sometimes occur. It also has the tragic element that if the Emperor had spent as much time with the other primarchs as he did with Vulcan, the Heresy would not have happened. But the circumstances of his eternal game and the enforced deadline after breaching his deal with the Powers rendered that possibility moot.

I wonder if this is what happened. That they have been weighed, that they have been measured, and that the Emperor has found them wanting. And then discarded them, like tools that were not suitable for the task at hand. I wonder if they refused to fight for whatever reason, that they had not in them what their father needed and thus, had to go, not at least to make absolutely clear that _no one,_ not even the Emperors sons is allowed to dissent in any way, shape or form. And I believe that in a way, the Emperor was attached to his sons, even more than he expected himself. His complete misjudgement when it comes to Horus and his complete and completely ignorant refusal to believe that his most favourite -tool- son turned against him, even when he was knocking on his gates; the dead bodies of loyal and innocent citizens piled around him, shows that. But I still believe that he did not really _love_ them - he was, as already said, attached to them like one would be attached to his favourite tools or a car or maybe a pet or working animal. When Girlyman visited the Emperor, he realised himself that the Emperor and what he could see in him was completely different from what he had experienced before, that there was no love, no compassion, no empathy, but a cold, calculating mind, seeing everone and everything as a means to an unknown end. And I believe that is not because the Emperor changed, but because he was not capable anymore to keep up the facade, the fake mask of a compassionate father, that he showed his sons before. I believe that the Emperor is simply not capable of feeling love or compassion and that maybe, he never was.

Not sure a "lack of wanting to be a warlord" is enough to justify spending years with the Emperor before meeting his Legion, not with how quickly primarchs adapt... Some of those years might have been spent on his Purpose as a Trefoil Primarch (a purpose which still hasn't been revealed), and maybe a few years studying his brothers and their legions as much as being taught by them. It's more likely it took more time to get big V and his fire boys ready to play whatever ancillary Trefoil role (The True legion) as well as be an active legion. The Emperor does like to multi-tasks after all

Why not? He made the talisman of the 7 hammers for the golden throne. Slotted straight in as a deadsman switch to a doomsday device…. Big E said should it go off, chaos would never recover the losses they would have but the Sol system would be destroyed. Good tradeoff if you ask me. We know big E can grant through Death to demons, maybe the 7hammers talisman magnifying his power to roast all the Deamonic enemies on the other side of the terra gate… that would be a boss ass move tbh

I get that but I don't think there was time he needed them all to be out reclaiming the galaxy before chaos made their move. Its basically cannon at this point that big e saw the war coming long before it happened he just didn't know which primarchs would turn and which would stay loyal. I would think the idea was to transition the loyal primarchs into more bureaucratic roles based on their skills like Gulliman being a governor for a portion of the galaxy because of his leadership skills or Vulcan being in charge of r&d on Mars after he won the heresy unfortunately never got a chance to play that out cause he lost the war
