Was talking about this on a Discord server with some friends, and between the poorly-designed track that makes it all but impossible *not* to violate track limits and the heat of a desert track only barely into fall, my assessment was that Losail needs to get the boot. FiA needs to buy out the contract and find a better track.

These ppl are well trained atheletes, but it isn't simply about testing their limits (the objective of straining circuits), the conditions are avoidable (moving the race to earlier or later in the calender when it's cooler, pirelli has been warning the F1 for 6 months about the tyre problems and potential danger it might cause ). Ocon threw up, sarg shat himself(apparently) , leclerc's vision was compromised at high speed corners and stroll fainted at high speed corners. Most drivers had to lift their visors but sand hit their eyes.alonso was turning into roast chicken. Ppl had to be helped out of their cockpits At 300km/h speed it can be very easily fatal. I think track limits has become a thing because track design has evolved to include more paved run-off, and yes, it's definitely faster to use that extra pavement at certain corners. I remember several years ago track limits being enforced very randomly; not every track, not every corner, and somewhat loosely enforced. Lots of fans and drivers complained for years because of the inconsistency. Now it's consistent. White line, every corner, every track, with strict enough enforcement to incentivize staying within track limits.

Another big thing is sharing the track use with motorbike series. It's all well and good saying just slap some grass/gravel on the outside of the turns. But that doesn't work so well when it'll end up with MotoGP riders high-siding at ridiculous speeds as opposed to cars which can just put on a bit of opposite lock to deal with it. It's not the perfect solution, but I agree that all tracks just having white lines where the policing is consistent (well, mostly!) is the best we can really hope for.

While the race was exciting, I don't think mandatory pitstops are the way to go. A huge part of the races is the strategy. The interesting part we missed with Hamilton's soft strategy, was hinted at the beginning of the race when they showed tire age... Lots of the mediums were already on lap 7, and with the 18 lap limit, they only had 10 laps to go on them, so the softs would have been better AND last as long as those mediums in this particular race condition/mandate.

I think the point was that it was still within the strategy window. With an 18 lap limit that put drivers 3 laps short of a full race with 2 stops. I don't know what tires Hamilton had to use moving forward, but being offset was shown to give fresher tires more than enough to pass. Hamilton thinking he was in the mix for a win would have had a shot. Ironically i think the heat of the track made the harder tires better later in the race as both soft runners at the end of the race were losing time on fresh short stints.

Maybe like how the FIA mandated max lamps per tire, they can also mandate if under certain conditions then it is required.

The thing that everyone been saying is that Red Bull car is better suited for Max rn, it's not that they built car around Max, but simply the data showed them that developing their car in certain direction makes it faster and that made a car that Checo can't adapt well to, as opposed to Max.

One thing I really liked when Massi was in charge is he would customize the track limits to keep farces like this and Austria from happening. Sure, the white line is great in theory but I'd rather customize it, let everyone do it, but police it enough to were we don't go to the other extreme of creating a new track.

I wish we hadn't lost sight of the "gaining an advantage" aspect. That really limits how many corners you need to monitor, and what situations should be allowed. I don't get how Checo only managed P10. He was up to like P15 by lap 3 because of people putting and then made no progress. That RB clearly had insane tyre wear due to how Max was putting in times comparable to drivers on new tyres while on old tyres after the first pitstops so I don't get how Checo couldn't utilize that and get at least P6 or P7. Watching him stuck behind Zhou for like 20 laps was just embarrassing. Honestly just throw Daniel or Yuki in at the end of the season depending on who does better and have Lawson be in the Alpha Tauri. They literally can't do worse.

Track limits are talked about for decades. It is true that the last years it became a hotter topic due to all the airport-style-runoff areas on many new tracks. In the olden days it wasnt much of a topic since going 'out' of the track almost always meant a loss of time because of gravel and grass. And not only do those materials slow down the car, they also easily damage or beach the cars. In Monza tracklimits are not an issue, nor in Suzuka or Zandvoort... notice something? All old school tracks with grass and gravel traps.

That way no team could get an advantage by trying to tweak the rules somehow.
