I think track limits has become a thing because track design has evolved to include more paved run-off, and yes, it's definitely faster to use that extra pavement at certain corners. I remember several years ago track limits being enforced very randomly; not every track, not every corner, and somewhat loosely enforced. Lots of fans and drivers complained for years because of the inconsistency. Now it's consistent. White line, every corner, every track, with strict enough enforcement to incentivize staying within track limits.

While the race was exciting, I don't think mandatory pitstops are the way to go. A huge part of the races is the strategy. I think the point was that it was still within the strategy window. With an 18 lap limit that put drivers 3 laps short of a full race with 2 stops. I don't know what tires Hamilton had to use moving forward, but being offset was shown to give fresher tires more than enough to pass. Hamilton thinking he was in the mix for a win would have had a shot. Ironically i think the heat of the track made the harder tires better later in the race as both soft runners at the end of the race were losing time on fresh short stints.

I really didnt like the mandatory pit stop lap limit, definitely took some of the strategy, surprise, and risk/reward away from the race. I also would like to see a method of organic track limit restriction that punished lap time without having to monitor or penalize, a strip of turf, gravel etc., and then just let them race...
@robh957711 ай бұрын
I'm ashamed to admit when Lewis and Russell came together, was to bust out a giant "HA!" There's been so many simmering issues with teams orders and George racing like a meathead it was truly inevitable..
@budthecyborg457511 ай бұрын
Track limits was never a thing in classic F1 because "going over track limits" meant putting a tire in the grass/gravel and spinning out. Bring back the grass or figure out a type of curb that physically slows the cars down without flipping them over.

I don't get how Checo only managed P10. He was up to like P15 by lap 3 because of people putting and then made no progress. That RB clearly had insane tyre wear due to how Max was putting in times comparable to drivers on new tyres while on old tyres after the first pitstops so I don't get how Checo couldn't utilize that and get at least P6 or P7. Watching him stuck behind Zhou for like 20 laps was just embarrassing. Honestly just throw Daniel or Yuki in at the end of the season depending on who does better and have Lawson be in the Alpha Tauri. They literally can't do worse.
@Klont12311 ай бұрын
You say they won’t do worse. But look at the teammates who crumbled being paired with Max. Albon, Gasly, Hartley, Perez. I don’t think Yuki will do better than any of them. Ricciardo … hard to tell.

Honestly, I'm not sure what Russell was attempting with that move, since he was on mediums and directly behind Verstappen, it's unlikely that he could've passed him from his position. It was likely yet another move by Russell to prove he was better than Hamilton

So in teds notebook. Ted says clearly Hamilton was on the softer tyres, he was going for the overtake around the outside. Russell should probably have had to keep verstappen focused on the inside line. I kinda agreed with that. Hamilton was going into that corner with SPEEED
@Gomiee11 ай бұрын
Honestly I blame Mercedes more than Ham, why would they put softer/faster tires on the Merc that’s behind? Obviously he would be faster at the start and an overtake was absolutely the direction it was heading. Russell was stuck in between and Hamilton knew max was on the inside, he could have left more room and on the camera almost looked like he went deeper into the apex than normal

Its a shame for the race that the Mercs crashed. They were so competitive, they may have even given Max some trouble. Say they both get ahead of Max like in Australia, things could've been a lot more interesting.
@joshn167811 ай бұрын
Yeah, the Mercedes strategists really caused that, the soft tyre made absolutely no sense. Why on earth did they give Lewis a tyre that would last 5 laps? Obviously Lewis made a mistake, you could hear him saying during the formation lap that he was going to get destroyed.

@@joshn1678 Russell mentioned that the plan was for Lewis to take the outside line using the softs to his advantage in a post-race interview, which is why i can't understand why he positioned himself there and compromised Lewis' line, rather than tuck behind Verstappen in case he ran Lewis wide

Track limits are talked about for decades. It is true that the last years it became a hotter topic due to all the airport-style-runoff areas on many new tracks. In the olden days it wasnt much of a topic since going 'out' of the track almost always meant a loss of time because of gravel and grass. And not only do those materials slow down the car, they also easily damage or beach the cars. In Monza tracklimits are not an issue, nor in Suzuka or Zandvoort... notice something? All old school tracks with grass and gravel traps.

Surely this race shows that we shouldn't be racing at Losail. 2021 and this season have both seen serious concerns for the tyres. Plus if the drivers are being dangerously unwell because of the demands of the circuit, that has to be a massive concern.

My daughter watched her first F1 race with me last night and when we talked about the hot water the drivers have to drink, I told her that the only way the drivers would get a thermos or actively cooled water container with a full amount of water in it, is if the FIA provide a standard waterbottle that teams have to fit to the car and have to fill up with water before a race. That way no team could get an advantage by trying to tweak the rules somehow.
