This night six years ago , 23 September, I searched my phone for a song to play to my father. It was just before midnight. I told him I'd play a song and then we'd rest. As the autumn leaves were turning and I found the Furey's "First Leaves of Autumn". I didn't know the lyrics at the time. I played the song, lay down on the fold out visitor's bed in his hospice room and fell asleep. At around 4 I am I awoke and held his hand as he breathed his last breath. I rarely listen to this beautiful song whose lyrics resonated so much with those last hours but I just had the urge to right now. R.I.P Daddy

When I took my mother home from an X-ray in the hospital she’d worked and trained in, in July 3 2013, and she looked at this beautiful shrub she’d planted and said I’ve never seen it like that so beautiful that’s before something; and then she died on 22/8, before the first leaves of autumn

Love his peculiar way of saying or singing words. My mother died 22 august. Technically in British summer. But in Irish autumn. The last conversation we had was about her favourite tree. And I did beg her I’ll admit to talk to me.

I couldn't agree more with your two phrases and this song. One of the most beautiful songs ever sung by the fureys, and at the same time one of the saddest and sensitive. Finbar's rolling deep voice gives it that special edge. Thanks for posting it.

Lyrics: As the daylight turns to starlight and the season turns to change, I get the same ould answers but the question still re - - mains. We shared a brief but magic song, By the first leaves of autumn, you were gone, Chorus Not until the rain has touched my face, Not until the first leaves fell from space, Not until that moment did I see, I never realised what you meant to me, From the days you filled with sunlight, To the laughter in you eyes , To the making and the breaking of the day you said goodbye, We shared a brief but magic song, By the first leaves of autumn, you were gone Not until the hearts defence is down Not until ould come-all-ye comes round , Not until that moment did I see, Never realised what you meant to me Not until the rain has touched my face, Not until the first leaves fell from space, Not until that moment did I see, Never realised what you meant to me,

What I can guarantee you, as truth from my life is this, irish men will not display verbal emotion what they can write song, poetry abut amonst us Irish women as much to show love.... but God love 'em for what they can do. Ne'er tire of it ever, give the song the love the praise til I drop from it all. Pennywhistles haunt fiddles jaunt, madolins strum and lil' banjos pick in simple chord. Take me away... I am older now, nothin' matters but his.
