I’ve worked for many large corporations. They absolutely do not hire the ‘best’ candidates, especially for higher paying jobs. They hire candidates who look like them and make them feel comfortable. Companies across the US have been abandoning DEI policies for almost a year not because its undefined or makes them nervous, but because it is divisive and destructive to any team effort. It thwarts productivity and creates an acidic work environment, which hurts the bottom line. "Better define" DEI? How about CDE--Conformity, Discrimination and Exclusion? In my previous company Diversity in DEI only meant certain races, who are considered "oppressed". It was never clear what exactly does it mean to get DEI priority and how less skilled could you be to still get accepted. This did not apply to Jews, Asians, Europeans (even if coming from a specific country with a tiny minority). It was the arm of the social justice movement, not really about true diversity.

CRT proponents specifically discount the entire concept of merit. See the American Bar Associations Lesson on CRT. Since DEI and CRT and closely aligned I imagine that DEI people likewise eschew anything to detect merit and opt for cooperative activities and participation certificates.

DEI is systemic discrimination based primarily on race and gender, used in conjunction with AA. Companies are starting to realize that this can offend the people who are discriminated against and runs legal risks long before it is sufficient to sustain the excitement of those being discriminated in favor of. The additional funding provided by wall street using their client's money to support their political preferences is no longer reliably covering the increased risks. Hopefully companies will go back to trying to hire the most qualified individual for the job without regard for their race, religion, gender or other irrelevant factor.
