The fact that a TMO can effectively dictate the result of a hard-fought contest by intervening for something so innocuous is where rugby falls short. Both teams were awesome, they played to their max and for the game to be decided on the caprice of a TMO is something rugby needs to improve. TMO wasn’t necessary. It prevented a natural end to a thrilling battle between two great sides.

I love that idea. The winner of the 6 Nations plays the winner of the Rugby Championship on the first Saturday of the Autumn Nations Cup in a grand final somewhere in the world. Imagine Ireland v New Zealand, winner takes $1 million in cash in Las Vegas, Shanghai, Munich, Mumbai or Rio de Janeiro... would be huge for rugby

I would suggest to add on to Haskells point, that REFS need to grow a pair and tell the TMO to do one if they're not convinced. Also, with WR further rule tinkering, they're determined to fuck the game completely.

Really enjoyed listening to Paolo. Need to learn a lesson about wanting to write teams off too quickly. Hope Italy goes from strength to strength. This 6 nations was fun to watch; even for a Saffa like me. I love the banter, but do think that there are double standards in the North. The same people that criticized Rassie are now bashing refs on a weekly basis.

The poll is interesting, I think it's because it finished so strong. The Scotland England game was the first interesting one to watch, then Italy beating Scotland and England beating Ireland made things interesting and the final week while not meaning much, were good games to watch. If you held the poll at the 3rd round, there were lots of comments it was the worst in recent history. Controversial officiating etc. I hope those poor calls aren't forgotten and we do see a response to improve that.

May be the whole pre-tackle thinking process is the point to be focussed on. When will players understand if they can't make a safe tackle they shouldn't tackle. Ben Earls had great game, but that tackle penalty was a foul correctly called. So players, don't commit to tackles that you can't deliver to the letter of the law, otherwise you'll continue to hurt people.

Isn’t it concerning that a professional tournament can have four results influenced by poor officiating? Three in the last minutes of matches and one when it was clear that a player had stepped out before a try was scored. The financial consequences of these decisions could be significant.

Haskell rant about the winning penalty needs taking in perspective. For me it was a no arms tackle, he didn’t really put his arm out to cover the effort. However the fact is there were other tackles like that not penalised and you see them at virtually every try line maul/ruck defence. What is annoying is the game gets decided, because most international teams have a kicker who can kick from that distance, on a referees call. That’s the problem Rugby Union will always have.

I haven’t heard that much moaning tbh. Not discussed at all in my group of rugby mad friends. We talked about the 4 tries on one hand and the blitz mistake plus overthrown lineout gifting 2 tries to France on the other. Re the Boks it’s not surprising people get on their backs as they have generally the most arrogant and obnoxious fans plus of course Rassie’s video nasty. The fact that you are still dwelling on this despite winning the RWC since just proves the point. Edit: thankfully the Bok players are incredibly humble and dignified win or lose so credit to them as clearly the best team in the world.

Not saying you have confirmation bias user-bunchofnumbers, but I haven't heard any moaning either amongst my rugby friends... most discussions have been about how we managed to put together a couple of good performances in the last 2 rounds, winning one and losing the other. What Hask is complaining about here (in my opinion) is not so much about what the decision was, but rather that the TMOs get too involved in the game which is increasingly being interrupted or being decided by their interventions on marginal calls (eg Scotland v France try-that-was-clearly-grounded-and-the-ref-seemed-about-to-award-it-but-TMO-overruled-because-they-could-not-see-a-grounding-in-the-replay). If you are here looking for validation, or are open to a different perspective of what people think of SA rugby, here we go: SA beat England fair and square in the last 2 world cups, and won back to back world cups because they were the best team in both tournaments, and remain the world's best team currently - it is going to be an amazing series against Ireland later this year, and will be amazing for the neutrals among us to watch 2 class teams from proud rugby nations play against each other... SA are a brilliant team with a great brand of rugby, and it is always exciting to play against them because it is a true test (most English fans feel this way)... also SA is a truly beautiful country with wonderful people (Mandela/Madiba being one of the greatest leaders of any country in history) and amazing potential to do so much good in the world. Yes, I am English 😆... hope that restores some balance in your view of how other countries view SA - best wishes from the UK my rugby friend!

The TMO called that penalty because it was a large, noisy crowd in French rugby country and they wanted to see France win. There is no other explanation than that. The fact that the TMO called it in so fast without proper checks is a disgrace, and the famously biased French TV directors didn't even show the incident once... The dubious penalty that decided the entire outcome of the match, wasn't even shown on replay once, that is ridiculous. (In addition, the ref blamed it on England number 7 who wasn't even on the pitch at the time)

Love Haskell’s rant about the penalty (FYI Nigel Owens explains on his video why it can be called as a penalty; I think it was ridiculous FWIW) is wonderful. Welcome to what it like to be a Scotland fan watching tries not be given, 14 penalties in a row, Irish blockers being ignored or held-up tries be given etc etc. The standard of refereeing over the last 18 month has been terrible. Inconsistent, miss obvious stuff, call marginal stuff to change games and so on. And not just against Scotland. Sure Scotland are the epitome of inconsistent, but none of this is helped by referees and TMOs just being terrible. I should add that it feels like there are two issues. A lot for the refs are lacking experience and it feels like Wold Rugby have asked refs to referee in a certain way which can change from week to week and so what we’re left with is a bit of a mess. As a long time fan it’s just hard to know what is going to happen and it’s all over the place.

video referees and their application have been runing the game for years. too many interventions which last far too long looking repeadedly at the same thing over and over without making a decision. if it takes that long it's not an obvious error and they sould get on with the game. I've said for a long time that they should have an NFL style system for video reviews. basically a limited challenge system for coaches where the ref goes to a booth and has about 1minute max to review from different angles etc and make a decision if there's clear evidence to overturn his on field decision. back this up with the video official looking for legitimate dangerous play. I'd also not allow replays on the big screens whilst decisions are being made as that just leads to players getting invovled and disuputing the on field decisions further.
